The Battle-Fields of our Stato.
Wo make the following oxtract from an
cditoriul in tho Luiictister Ledger :
" History has never done justice to tho
engagement at Uuford'a battle-ground?
lias in fact givon it a wrong location, and
it roiuaius for us?for this generation?to
give it the notoriety anil importance that it
doservos. This subject we alluded to sonic
months back, and asked any or all persons
who had any traditionary knowledge of this
fight, or of any circumstances connected
therewith, or of any revolutionary incident
founded in our district, to contribute this

bora and of their country's history. No
one has yet responded to our call, yet wo
arc convinced that there is unpublished reminiscence
hero ; those in possession of it
inny regard it as hoing of but little couseqiioncc,
and in this way much has already
been lost. From this fceliug of careless
indifference, enough incidents, founded in
our State (which may indeed be regarded
ns the classic ground of the Revolution,)
jias uecn iosi to nil volumes, and we arc
glad to kuow that efforts tiro (linking to prcKcrvo
the little tllnt now remains. A gentleman
of Abbeville District, whom wo
mot during our late trip to the mountains
is collecting material for a revolutionary
history, to l>o confined to the upper districts
of this State, llero is a chance to give
our district a placc in tlio picture, and wc
repeat the call made by us some time back
iuuv Mm* mujf iiuvu hi [tusMuiwiiou maiicr
t.h~t by any possibility moy aid in making
up a history of revolutionary times in this
district. Who will respond ?
" Tn reference again to battle-fields, wo
will romark that every spot in South Carolina,
dignified and inndo sacred by a battle
or a skirmish during the Revolution,
should bo marked by a monument. It
[should be the peculiar pleasure of each district
to attend to its own battle-field*, jealous
of any out?ide aid, other than by voluntary
contributions. But if there is not
enough patriotism for tjiis in tho districts?
^ if tho Whig blood has boon (tooled hy amalgamation,
or though it still may run pure
A and tho spirit is strong, but tho flesh is
weak?if from any of these causes t.lio whole
I or i\ portion of the districts fail to carry out
thin measure, then the State should take
the matter in hind and do what the districts
had failed to do. The cost would he
trilling, nothing to weigh with the imperishable
glory that would aecruo to her name
and the gratification it would afford to future
gonr?Mtions."
