GeorgE IV. a Hack Driver.?A
London hackney coachman, giving
ttn jiccount qf his "life and times" in
thirMorning Chronicle, relates the ^
following story: (<
"Ah, tne old times was the rackety a
times! I've often laughed and said '
that 1 could say what perhaps nobody,
or almost nobody in England,
can say now, that I'd been driven by
a King. He grew to be a King afterwards,
George IV. One night, p
you see, sir, I was called off the F*and j?
and told to take up at the Brii.sh ^
coffee-house, in Gockspur street. I
was a lad then, and when I pulled up
at the door, the waiter ran out
and said: 'You jump down, and get
inside?the JPrince is going to drive
himself.1 I didn't much like the notion
on it, but I didn't exactly know ?
Vvhat to do, and wr.s getting off my
seat to see if the waiter had put any
tiling inside, for he let down the glass I
am1 just as I was getting down, and
had my loot on the wheel, ?iat came
the Prince of Wales, and four or five tl
rattle-brained fellows like himself. 1 S
think Mai. Hanger was one, but I JH
had hardly time to see thew, for the IV
Prince griped me by the ancU and J
the waistband of my breeches, and d
lifted me off the wheel, and flung me h
right into the coach, through (he win- S
dow, and it was open, as happened, S
luckily. I was little then; but he r<
must have been a strong man. He tl
didn't seem so very drunk either..
The Prince wasn't such a bad dri- S
ver. Indeed, he drove very well for fe
a Prince." d
ir
George Thompson, the famous En- tl
glish anti-slavery agitator, was a- k
mong the passengers by the steamer
Canada from Liverpool. W e believe
that it is not his intention to extend
his visit south of Mason & Dixon's ~
line.
