OBITUARY.
Departed this lift', on Monday evening
1 <3th July, at his Futhc-rs residence in Anderson
District, Major Joux Jamks Non
kik, aged 25 years 0 months 27 days, of
typhus fever, by which ho wns confined to
liis chamber about three weeks. Previous
to this attack, he was almost on entire
s1 ranger to disense of any kind; and
his prospect for a long and prosperous
life was doubtless equal to any he left behind
him.
Having seen him several times during
his illness, I saw but little appearance of
a change, till within u short period of the
closing scone; then his noble, manly
form, began to undergo a rapid and striking
change?the strength of manhood,
and freshness of youth, gave way to the
feebleness of the dying, and paleness of
the dead. What is human lift; ? "It i? a
vapor that appeaveth for a little time and
I hen vanishcth away."
lie was a high-minded, honorable ypung
man. lie was ardent in his affections,
sincere in his attachments, attentive to the
wants find wishes of his parents, beloved
by his friends, and highly f*espectcd by
the large circle of his acquaintance.

forgotten ; the multitudes who wmv. sis. i

him, for the last time, cold and silent in
the arms of death, felt the fountains of
their grief stirred within them. But this
stroke fell with peculiar weight upon his

of their loss.
It might appear strange to shortsighted
mortals, that one, with such blight
prospects before him, should be cut down
in tho morning of life. But "God's
thoughts are not our thoughts." "What I
do, thou knowest not now, but you shall
know horeaf^p^.'
Though his untimely departure may be
painfully felt, and long remembered by
bis friends, tbe evidence, thnt their loss
will be his gain, should dry up the fountain
of their sorrows.
While bo enjoyed vigorous health,
when no danger was nigh, he remembered
bis Creator in the days of his youth ; and
gave himself away to God in an everlasting
Covenant, by making a public profession
of faith i" Christ, Hefore his disease
had assumed any alarming symptoms, in
a private conversation with the writer,
lie spoke of his affliction, as ''designed of
God for some wises purpose." At n lator
period he expressed a belief that through
the grace of Qod his sins were pardoned
and all would be well. Death to him had
lost its terrors. Looking upward he said*
"Heaven, sweet home, I shall soon be
at home in heaven." Then taking each
of hi.? friends present by the hand, bade
them a calm, deliberate, affectionate farewell,
exhorting each to meet him in heaven.
He said, as he was young, he would
like to live a little longer, but resigned
himself wholly to the will of God. In
death his countenance was calm, sereno.
nnd composed, exhibiting a mnnly independence
and self confidence, which seldom
appears in life.
Having no foars at to his own safety,
hr: manifested dejp solicitude for the salvation
of his friends; and offered up most
fervent prayers, that they may be prepared
for their latter end: and with the earnestness
of a dying man, urged upon all
n round him, to seek the solvation of their
souls. On Sunday ho appeared to possess
an unnatural strength, while in clear
sad distinct tone?, ho pressed th<> FQlemi)itios
of eternity upon the consideration
of those about him. Jiyit before he ceased
to speak, ho said, "friends weep not
for me," then clasped bis hands and said,
"0 death whore in thy stinir! O crave
where is thy victory!"
