8ECOND CROP OF IRtI PC
TATOES.
For several years I have been
trying to raise a second crop of
Irsh potatoes, Jut without suceess
until last year, and as I was so well
rewarded for my continued efforts,
and value the second, or fall crop,
more than the spring crop I offer
you my plan of planting. etc., for
publication, that others may be pro
tited by it :
The greatest trouble I have had
to contend with was to get a stand,
and by close observation I found
it was the excess o' heat, combined
with the drouth generally prevailin,
at the planting season, that caused
the potato planted to -rot before it.
could come up. To ovicte this
difficulty I selected from the first
crop such as I wanted. to plant.
Small ones do well for me. I spread
them on a dirt cellar floor to keep
them as cool as possible, and cover
ed with half rotted leaves, (or straw)
and sprinkled them occasionally
with water. I did this tokeep the.f
moist and to make them sprout. I
did this three or four weeks before
I expected to plant. I then selected
a piece of.!and as much protectet
irom the midday and evening sun
as possible. piowek deep and close.

three feet wide. put in plenty of
manure (such as cotton seed mixed
with stable, sow or hogpen manure
and rich dirt), such as is generally .
wasted around a farm, and covered
the same with two furrows.
This should be done about the
first of July. After the ftrst rain. i
the last of July or beginnin of
August, open the ro~.s:; or ridges
with a bull tongue. W hen you (
have covered the manure. (drop the

movements-not tip--toeing--and '
rapid, rather than slow, are a great
relief to any person who is blessed I
with a practical nurse. Whisper
ing is torture. Silence is b.est uin
til youi can discuss matters ini an
other room; but if you speak, speak
out and make no mysteries about
anything. - In severe illness the
nurse must watch her patient
steadily, but not seem to be looking.
In convalescenee it frequently
soothes the invalid to have the
nurse seated at the window, appar
ently looking out. Th'~is frecs :be
faculties from the tension~ that the
sense of being watched usually
gives and also quiets anxiety.
T hose farmers who desire to seed
orchard grass will now be preparing
the land for the reception of the
seed, wnich should be sown in Au
gust Thoroughly well prepared,
because this crop not only requires
It, but well deserves it, remaining
in the ground, as !t does, for 20) or
30~ y'ears, or even more, when well
treated by occ asionz! top dressings.
The soil should be made fmne by- re
peated barrowings. The seed is
then sown andl cross sown, half each
way, to etan even scwingt, and (i
the ground is then lightly brush
harrowed, and then rolled. The
rolling is especially needed if the
weather is dry. From two to three
bushels of seed-about S:uponds
is cown per acre, As the seed iss
rather costly it is well to sow an
acre or two first, cut this thle next
y-ear when it is ripe andi save the.
seed. One acre will produce
ent:ugi to sow 1I) acres.
