Garibaldi was born in 1807, and
condemned to death for eosspiracy
against the King of Sardinia in 1g34.
Escaping to France he offered his
services to the Bey of Taois, and in
1836 he offered his services to the
Republic of Rio Grande, where he
was taken prisoner. Ini1847 he was
one of the defenders of Rome against
the French, and on the defeat of the
Revolutionists fled to Staten Island,
New York, where he nianfetared
soap. He fought with the Italians in
the war against Austria, and in 1860
invaded the Kingdom of the Two
Sicilies, King Franeis II abaAdonicg
Naples on Garibaldi's approach. His
next serviee was in leading a Hun
garian revolt in which he was wound
ed. In 1867 he invaded the States of'
the Church. and was decisively de
feated by the French'and Pontifical
troops. In 1970 he offered bis sword
to the Frencb Republic, and had corm
mnd of ore irregular forces. When
Rome was oeenpied as the Italian
Cap:ai it was expeeted that Gi
baldi would rest content, but be then
began agitating for a Republic and
fr the recovery of the Italan or:
retine provinces of Austria.
