The answci is geneially favorable (as scarcel> any State is not suited to tht growth of some breed of sheep). but accompanied by the advice to first ascertain what are the dog laws, in the State in question. No fact in agricultwre is more fully esuablished than the relations be tween sheep and curs. No m1jatter what the climate or the pasturage. if miserable half savage dogs roati at large, and the State provides io redress for the losses of the sheep owner, that State is not one ill which sheep-raising can undertaken with a fair prospect of success. We esteem a well bred respectable dog as highly as any one, and it is not against such that our remarks ap ply. But the sparsely settled States have a large shiftless popu lation, and. as a rule the more worthless the inhabitant, the larger number df curs does he keep. He does not feed his brutes, and as they are fond of muiton, he is qnitc willing that some one else should provide it. As bearing on this point, we quote from an ad dress, made several months ago, before the Central Kansas Bree ders'Association by Mr. F. D. Co burb, the author of the excel lent 'Swine Husbandry, already noticed in our columns. Mr. Coburn is terribly in earnest, as the following vill bear witnes: 'Re forms, like charity, should begin at home, and if each old shot gun, musket, and revolver, in Kansas, was brought out from its rcsting, p1ae;~Kind 1or one time made to do service for the Lord and our peo ple, by letting the blessed sun shine through some contemptible, cow ardly cur, and then traded for a long-handled fourtined manuare fork, ~to be kept bright with a reasonable application of elbow grease, the aet would stamp the Sons of the State as the most courageous, the most progressive, ard highly civ ilized of any people of which we *have record.'-AmerCean Agriculta THE COUTRP SCHOOL HoUsE. There is no rur-al building that needs more improvement than the school house in the country. The writer's *recollections of youthful school days are associated with a small, forbidding. once red, but then weather stained, and much disfig r-ed 'shed,' standing in a small treeless 'yard,' that was open en tirely to the r-oad and reached by passing through a ditch that had been made by the 'workers on the road,' and left in an un finished state many years before. The interior of the school room was * enything but tasteful or neat anything but inspiring to the children and teacher. We will not describe the state of things as~ it is too familiar to many of the readers of the A umriocin A1 gricultu rist even to-day. It was but r cently that we were driving through one of the richest and best counties of the 'Empir-e State,' and came to a structure seem ingly in its last stages of dis solution, but p)robably 'good' for many years to come.C It was a -school house,' and a sorry sight, standing there close by the road side. It- was a building that the adjoining farmenrs, would pronounce unfit for a cattle shed-and in con trast with the neatly painted farm houses and( large new barns. it was an unsigh:ly monument to the folly of man.
