Death.
Mr. Hilliard Bishop, a worthy and
respected citizen, died at his home a
few miles above Jalapa the 5th instant,
aged about fifty years.
Mrs. Eliza Lindsay. the wife of Mr.
F. M. Lindsay, and daughter of Capt.
James Gauntt, died at her home in
Newberry Monday night. She will be
buried this (Tuesday) afternoon at the
family burying ground, three miles
from town.

A negro man, about 40 years old, on

in his house Tuesday morning. He had

Malicious Mischief.
Saturday morning Mr. D. W. Barre
sent -three of his hands to the field to
plow. They did not want to work, and
hence went in a bad humor. When
they returned at dinner time he noticed
that one of the mules was ailing, bleed
ing at the month and being barely able
to stand. He died the same day. No
ticing the great discharge of blood, and
the bruises on the mule, Mr. Barre sus
pected it had been beaten to death, and
he made an investigation. He found
that it had been tied to three different
trees with chains and ropes and had
been beaten with chunks and sticks;
and this was undoubtedly the cause of
its death. It was a splendid mule, the
best Mr. Barre had; perfectly sound(;
four years old; sixteen hands high.

for the mule last Spring.
Mr. Barre went to a Trial Justice
Monday and got a warrant for the ar
rest of Moses Burton, Gabe Long and
Henry Shell. charging them with the
crime.

Who Saw it First?

The crops along the Laurens R. R.,
between Newberry and Kinard's Turn
D)ut, with one or two exceptions, are
very poor. There has not been rain
Bnough; and in several instances not
enough work.
Egg lemonade is a popular drink.
[t is an ordinary lemonade with the ad
ition of a raw egg shaken up in it. It
is not only a pleasant drink, but is also
healthy and nourishing.
The thermometer rose to 101 degrees
in the coolest part of Dr. Fant's Drug
Store Friday; in the front part of the
store it rose to 105. The average heat
in Newberry at the hottest part of the
day was not less than 100.
The Barbecue given by Messrs. Burns
and Jones Saturday was a first class
affair. There was an abundance and a
variety, and everything was nicely
cooked. From the number of custom
ers we judge the 'cue was ii success
financially as well.
There is some talk of the Virginia
Midland running by way of York, New
berry and Edgefield to Augnsta. Our
business men, merchants and farmers
especially, should keep their eyes open
so that if there is really any chance to
get another railroad they will not lose
that chance by indifference and inatten
Jalapa has been quite lively for the
past two or three weeks. Besides her
own pretty girls she has had in her
midst two from Doko, four from New,
berry and one from Lexington. A pic
nic was given in a beautiful grove
above Jalapa the 5th in honor of the
fair visitors, which proved a very pleas
ant affair.
Upland corn, as a general thing, is
very poor. You may say what you
please about planting too much cotton,
having your corn-cribs in the West.
and all that sort of thing; but any far

pay to plant much upland in corn. L

Something ought to be done this Sum
mer toward a Cotton Factory at New
berry. There are persons ready to put -
their money into the r.nterprise, and all
that is needed is for some prominent U
business man to take the lead. As soon
as the railroad from Atlanta, Ga., to S
Birmingham, Ala., is completed we G
will be in close connection with the
coal fields; coal will be cheap, and
steam power will be but little more ex
pensive than water power.
Engine No. 1, now run by Engineer E
Booker, on.the C. & G. R. P.., is one of
the first three engines bought for the B
Blue Ridge road about twenty-three
years ago. Its original name was
"Blue Ridge." Its eompanions, "Fort
Hill" and "Chatuga," both blew up on
the C. & G. road; the former near Sa
Inda Old Town in 1875, k-lling Engin
eer Lane; the latter near Honea Path
in 1880, killing Engineer Milligan. No. si
1 is now used for the Material Train.
A Water Tank is being bnilt near the
freight depot. It will contain 50,000
gallons of water, and the -water will
be pumped into it from Scott's Creek g
by a Rider Compress Engine. This
engine works by hot air instead of
steam; it consumes only a very small T
quantity of coal, and is therefore not
at all expensive. There are three of A
these engines now being used along C
the C. & G. R. R.; one at Bel
ton, one at Hodges, and one at Green- y
wood. Mr. Ricbbourg, Master Oar
penter of the road, is superintending c
the work.
