JUN 1 ) 1 191 --N tY The Lanc:-is-rFa r says no - las of m'i: ha'p01 e-e 0 much and none have done so much - good as those who are dero:inated C. fancy farmers. They have becn, iL all times and conntries, the ben, faetol : F. of the men -wbo have trcated them t with "derisiou. They have expeii : mented for the good of the wurld S while others hav- .1wpiy worked fr r: their own good. They tested theo rics, while others raise crL,ps for i the market. They nave given a og- ' nity and:glory to the ofcpation of farming it never had before. These I fan'y farmers have changed the w.d hog into the Suffolk and Berk shire; the wild cattle of Britain in to Shorthorns ; the monntain sheep, with- its lean body and hair fleece, into the Southdown and Merino. They brought up the milk of cows from pints to gallons. They have lengtheued the sirloin of the bul lock, enlarged the ham of the hog, given strength to the shoulders of theox, rendered finer the wool of the sheep, added fleetness to the speed of the horse, and made beautiful every animal that is kept in the service of man. They have im proved and hastened the develop ment of all domestic animals, till they hardly resemble the animals from which they sprang. Fancy farmers introduced irriga tion and under-draining, also grind ing and cooking food for stock. They have brought guano from A Peru and nitrate of soda fron c h( Chili. They introduced and do % mesticated all the plants we have of A .foreign origin. They brought out the theory of rotation of crops as a natural means of keeping up and - increasing the fertility of the soi'. C They first ground up gypsum and bones, and treat-, the latter with acid to make manures of peculiar vAal They first analyzed soils as ameans of determining what wasG wanted to increase their fertility. methods of raising and distributing water. .Fancy farmers or fancy horticul turists have given us all our va- a rieties of< fruits, vegetables and flowers. A fancy farmer, in Ver .:7 mont, a few years ago originated ai the Early Rose potato, which added I millions of dollars to the wvealth of - the country, and proved a most irm portant accession in every part of the world where introduced. Ano- C) ther of these same fancy men orig- \ inated the Wilson st"awberry, and th anoather th:e Conic zrd grape.
