Merebant, died at her home, three miles from Newber ry Saturday afternoon, after a pro tracted illness. Mrs. Merchant ap peare4 better last week than' for some time past; she was stronger and more cheerful, and it was hoped that she was getting well, when she died suddenly. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon. and the body was buried in Rosemont Cemetery. To Rent-Dr. Thompson's Dwelling, opposite Herald Office-apply at once. The beauty of it is that he has accumulate'd this property for himself since the war by his energy and close' attention to business. Personal. Mr. Alan Johnstone is just recover ing from a three weeks' illness. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Thomason left Newberry Saturday for North Carolina. Mr. M. Foot left Wednesday last for New York. He goes to purchase his Spring and Summer stock of goods. Col. T. B. Crews, of the Laurens Herald, passed through town Thursday. TL Baptist Sunday School -4as procured a new song book that isar superior to the ordinary Sniday ' ool music, and teachers and pupils consequently much pleased with it: Ie book has been gotten up by Mr. F.>nson, assisted by Mr. Sherwin, beh men of fine musical taste, and geat care has been taken to admit into ts book only the best selections. There ia marked absence of "doggerel" Erses, unfortunately so common in nany Sunday School song books. The asme of this new book is Spiritual Songs for the Sunday School, and i tis ublished by Scribner & Co., in a very andsome style. We understand th at he Presbyterian Sunday School has dopted the same book. The Baptist Sunday School will have a general review next Sunday after noon, with singing, and addresses to he children. Tne Street Tax. The Town Council ha:s nothing to do with fixing the ages of those who shall be subject to strect tax. The Legisla ture makes those between the ages of 16 and 50 liable to road duty. In in orporated towns persons between-these ages are liable to street duty, not by the action of Town Councils, but by act of the Legislature. They are re quired to work the streets a certain number of days in the year. or to pay a certain amount of money in lieu of work. So that it is not only not the fault of the .Town Council tbat boys of 16 are liable to street duty, but the Council would have no right to exempt them from it. We make this explanation in justice to the Town Council, becauise there seems to be a misapprehension on the subject-some thinking that it rests with the Town Council to fix the ages foi working the streets or paying the duty.
