Fair ginned eight and a half bales of cotton the 4th insat in six hours and forty minutes. Serenade. The Newberry Band serenaded C. Holloway. of Pomaria, and Col. WIl. Wallace, of Columbia, Thursday night at the Crotwell Hotel. One of a Thousand. Mr. W. E. Higgins has a colored uok woman between fifty and sixty yer;L1b f age who has lived in the County all her life, and has not been to town since she was six years of age. The celebrated elocutionist, will give an entertainment in Thespian Hall to morrow, (Wednesday) night. He is known to the Newberry public as one of the finest readers on the stage, and we bespeak for him a full house. Ran Off. The down passenger train of the G. &C. R. R. ran off the track about twelve miles below Greenville Wednes day. The entire train was thrown off. The engine and mail car were much injured; nobody hurt. Escaped JaiL George Bo!and, white, broke jail Wednesday night by breaking the hinge to his cell door and climbing out of a second story window by means of his blankets tied together. He was put in jail the 2nd instant on a charge of grand larceny and house-breaking. He lives in the lower portion of the County. "WINE OF CARDUI" makes rosy cheeks and clear complexions. In consequence of the pas tor's absence, there will be no preach ing in the Lutheran Church next Sun day. Professors Holland and Rahn ex pect to leave for Synod Thursday or Friday. Jim Pet Cannon was shot by Rich Sheppard Friday night on Mr. R. S. Satterwhite's place-both colored. The weapon used was a pistol, and the wound, through the bowels, is consid ered mortal. The difficulty started b'e tween the women of Sheppard's famnily and Cannon's wife, and in the row that ensued -the shooting took place. Shep pard and three women have been ]odged in jail. Thanks. The Secretary of the Dixie Agricul tural Association, of Widesboro, N. C., will accept our thanks for a compli mentary to the annual Fair which comes off on the 26th to the 29th, in clusive. We have only time and space to add that this rich and prosperous county generally gets up a fair of which it has reason to be proud, and that any of our friends from this section who may attend will be richly repaid. The procession through the streets was long drawn out and not at all attrac tive. The show, itself was about on a par withrsimniar exhibitions. The rid ing was ordinary ; the acrobatic per formances were good; tho trained dogs were excellent, and other features wre pt4y od. John Lowlow is the best clown on the road. A very large crow d was in town, es timnated at eight or ten thousand ; pe pie who have lived here many years say it was the biggest crowd they ever saw in Newberry. Not more than hal1 of the crowd attended tile circus. Ford's Comedy Company Treated the theatre-loving public of Newberry last week to two fine plays in Thespian Hall. Tuesday evening Fun on th*e Pacific" was given in a jolly, rollicking style, and was greatly njoyed. Some of the character sketeh es, interspersed here and there, were xcellent. Wednesday evening the ,ompany performed their new play, "Sam'l of Posen". with Mr. Curtis at amuel. His acting was as near to the life as possibly could be. It is not often that Newberry is so rortunate as to be visited by such a com pany as Ford's, and we are glad ho had a good house; it will encourage first lass companies to come here. As to whether theatrical exhibitions are a benefit or not there may be a difference o opinion; but there can be no doubt that if we are to have them we should have the best. Various and alt About. The dust last week was dreadful. M'r. Casper Smith, of Laurens, ex hibited a splendid pair of bay mares at the County Fair. Laurens, Edgefield and Union, to ether with other surrounding Coon ties, were well represented in beauty and gallantry at the County Fair. Mr. S. C. Goodshall exhibited the fine thoroughbred ~stallion Patriot at the County Fair. His sire was by import ed Albion, and his dam by imnported Gleco. Mr. 0. B. Butler had on exhibition at the Fair one of the Tanner engines with spark extinguisher. With this one can gin in perfect safety any wbere; not a spark escapes from the engine. Col. Thomas W. Holloway had two fine Yorkshire pigs on exhibition at the County Fair that were beauties-if any thing in the hog line can be stich. They were pure white, full blood, and six months of age. M. Foot & Son, Edw. Scholtz and B. H. Cline & Co., had each a beautiful showcase of goods tastefully arranged at the Fair that added much to the ap pearanco of the hall. The organ rolled its notes from the growling diapason to the gentle flute; and the congregation accompanied by deep sepulchral coughs to coughs scarcely audible, because they had not yet heard of the wonderful efficacy of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. Hamp Mitchell and Ambrus Wil liams, both colored, had a fight at Hel ena Sunday morning. Williams was badly cut on the forehead and cheek and was struck on the back of the head with a stick, which came near breaking the skull. Dr. Gilder was.sent for and attended the wounded man. A good many darkies came down on the Laurens tramn Saturday, " to see the show."' They laid in a supply of mean whiskey while here, and while returning ha'i quite a row on the cars near Kinard's Turn Out. In the melee a pistol went off, and the ball went through a colored woman's leg. Mr. Thos. S. Moorman's three year old colt, which was on exhibition and carried oft two premiums at the County Fair. died Sunday night ait Col. B. F. Griffin's, where Xe had been driven that day by Mr. Rtobt. Moorman. It was an excellent animal, gentle and well train ed, and its owner prized it very nighly. The mule that took the premium at our County Fair as the best South-Caro lina raised was eighteen years old; but didn't look to be over eight, and was as active and lively as a coIL. It had been worked nearly all its life by white men and had been taken care of. This shows the benefits of good attention to stock. The "fifty cents or half-a-dollar man" was in town again last week with his "Scott's Photographic Novelty." After running it for a day or two, he received notice from~ a citigen that if he didn't lose up he would be proseciuted for Eambling, and he closed. The .party who ran the "Lucky Numbers" re ceived a similar notice, and did like THE COUNTY FAIR! FINE STOCK! Falling Off in Field Crops! DOMESTIC DEPARTMENT A PERFECT SUCCESS I PREMIUMS, &c. The County Fair was held at the Fair Grounds of the Society, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week. The number of entries far exceeded that of any previous year, and amounted to thirteen hundred and eleven. From some cause the de partwents that should have been most fully represented had the fewest exhibits; the samples of Field Crops were extremely limited. In qual ity, however, this department was good enough. There was only one bale of cotton, a few half-bushels of corn, wheat and oats, and a pretty good show ing of large and fine turnips and pota toes. A sample half-busbel of wheat in this department deserves special mention. It is called the Bill Dallas, and is rust-proof. Mr. Jno. R. Spear man, Jr., who exhibited this sample, tested the wheat thoroughly this sea Lon. He planted this and common wheat side by side. The common wheat had the rust bad4y, and made less than half a crop. The Bill Dallas did na have %he sign of rust, and made a full yield. 'Mr. Spearman also exhibit ed a sample of Burt's rust-proof oats, which succeeded as well as the wheat did. Going up-stairs into the Ladies De partment everything pretty and attrac tive met the eye-beautiful quilts, silk, worsted and cotton, crochet work, rugs, carpets, mats, lace, and everything else that ingenuity and good taste could de vise or deft fingers fashion were dis played in rich profusion. And then the jellies, pickles, preserves, wines, cakes, bread, butter, and so many other things that are so pleasant to have about a house and render woman a necessity in domestic economy, were beautiful to look upon and would go straight to a man's heart by the shortest way ever yet discovered by housekeepers. We could linger over this department a week-provided the cooks were out and the supply should last so long-but we must desist. Nature, in this depart nent, was so far outstripped by her young sister, Art, that we feel it due to the elder dame to say that her pears and her apples were of a most excellent quality; one bachelor exhibited fourteen variettes of apples, all very fine; a lady exhibited a "baker's dozen" of ele gant pears. The police succeeded in finding and arresting them both. -The amount -they took was $30; when searched, after arrest, they had in their pockets $29.05. among it a $2 counterfeit note that they didn't get from DeWalt, and some cards of a style peculiar to the sporting fraternity. One of the par ties gave his name as W. B. Jones, from Columbia, the other as Charley Henderson, from Greensboro', N. C.
