It is reported that the only men affected by the summer beat in St. Louis, were those in the habit cf bor rowing instead of paying for thEir newspaper. THUOMPSON, Dentist, over Mower's Store. Whole Sheet. Our readers will appreciate our giv ing a whole sheet this week instead of the half sheet usual on this holiday oc casion, and we ask them to take it as an index of our purpose to make the HERALD in every respect worthy their support the present year. The printers had to take a little holiday however, and this will account for the absence of some of the usual variety. Next week and onwaid there shall he no lack. ut'n's Best, Free and Easy and T. . Tfhe Bdoard of County Commissioners Fridyf the 27th ult., awarded the con traci for keeping the poor house for 1879 to Mr. WV. L. Waters, his bid being the lowest of the seven presented. He is to receive $100 for his services, and to have the use of the farm-a two horse farm-and to cultivate four acres as gardens for the use of the pauLlpers. This is much cheaper than it has been run heretofore. Mr. Waters ihe next day withdrew his bid and the contract was awarded to Mr. HI. C. Wilson, tihe p)resent Keep er, at $150. Dr. J. W. Folk,.of Jalapa, was elected physician. His contract is to visit the ~~~.1 More Buggies. An agent of Emerson, Fisher & Co. of Cincinnati, came in Saturday witi twenty buggies-ten top and ten no top, The agent sold six or eight at auctior Saturday afternoon at the average pricE of about $50 for the open buggies and $70 for the top buggies. Monday others were sold in the same way. We understand that Messrs. Coppock & Johnson have bought the balance of the lot. Newberry ought to be well sup Plied with buggies by this time. We are under ohligations to Messrs. Munn & Co., publishers of the SeienteFc American. for packages of Uranine, a ewly discovered color:n slbstance, whoso coloring power is astonishing. it admits of several beautiful experi :ents, an atom of which .ropped into a tumbler of water immedi.:tely sends down through the water whvt appears to be a bright green rootle , and the tumbler soon looks as if it were crowded fall of beautiful green planm. The publishers are sending packages to each of their readers. The paper can be se ured for twelve months for $3 2,, or six months for $1.60. Send subse-ip tion to Munn & Co., 37 Park Row, N, w York. Editoriai Experience. The editor presented a bill for eigN years' back subscription. The old fa- - mer was first amazed, then indignar.t. Ie put on his spectacles, scrutinized he bli, and after assuring himself that t was genuine, ise exclaimed; "I've een supportin' this yere paper for nigh oto eight years, and I never had no such thing as that flung at me before. 'll stop supportin' it." Hie not only ithdrew his valuable support, but 'iled to pay the bill. This did not happen to the editor of he 1HmmAL, but it is acknowledged that there are one or twvo names on the ooks whose indlebtednless runs back qually as long. We are afraid to stop their paper as we might lose their aluable support. Why let your Baby suffer and per. lius die. when a bottle of Dr. Bull's Ba'by Syrup would at once relieve it md effect a cure. Price 25 cents. .ast Notice. For some time back notice has been given that on the first of January the ames of subscribers in arrears would e erased f--om the subscription book. Many have responded to the request o pay up and renewv; but many thers however have disregarded the otice, and we begin the -unpleas-mt work of striking out. Those who fail to get a paper after this week will know the cause. We are forced reluc anly to do this, because it is imnpossi le for us to print the paper, pay the printer, pay the paper maker and meet all the other incidental expenses unless we aire paid for it. We will be pleased to have every one renew and continue with us, and those in arrears to pay up~ promptly and save us the trouble of collecting. -Hclday Greeting. Merry Christmas! Try it and see if we are not cor rect. Address Ludden & Bates, Savan nab, Ga., Publishers. Now is the Time. At this season of t he year every ont is on the look out for something new nice and cheap, something extra, fori is holiday time, Christmas is at hand and every one, big and lhttle, must b< made to f'eel just a little happier that common, the cost being a secondary consideration, for it only comes once year, you knowv. Its a settled fact tha something has to be bought, perhap many things, for some men and womei d0 things on a grand scale in the happ): Christmas time, make ever so man: little and big ones happy and feel thi better for it in the doing. This poin settled, the question arises what shal these good, nice, cheap things be, ani where can they he had; wveIl, we an swer(q the whole by saying at Kingslan< & Heath's immense establishment i Columbia, where can be found th reatest variety of such goods as ar eeded at this particular time. Thei stoc is ewildeingl- lovely. 50t: Various. Citizens' meeting in the Court House Thursday, 2nd., to nominate Intendant and Wardens for the ensuing year. This County will have only about twenty miles o' ence to make-from Saluda to Broad River along the line of Newberry and Lexington. Christmas day in town was as much like Sunday as could be-the only dif ference being that only two stores were closed. in the afternoon the Silver Cornet Band made the Streets lively with a serenace in masks. A young step-son of Henry Kennedy, colored, blew himself up Christmas niglit with a toy cannon. His face was severely burned with powder and there is danger of his losing one eye. The Good Tenplars had a Christmas Tree in their Hall Thursday night. The Hall was beautifully decorated, and the "Christiuas Tree," a large holly bush, was covered with presents. Rev. Luther Broaddus imdde a short address. The evening passed off very pleasantly. Common Sense. It is simply in keeping with common sense to say that a specialist who gives his undivided attention to the treat nient of a certain class of diseases ought to succeed where practitioners - general practice may fail. Dit. E. B. FOOTE, of 120 Lexington Avenue, New York City, has given his exclusive at tention to the treatment of CiROIC iS I EASES for twenty-flive years, during which time he has cured thousands whose faces he has never seen. If you vill send to him for his searching list of questions you will see how this has been done in part. Consultations in person or by mail FREE. Dr. Foote's works, Plain Home Talk embracing Medical common Sense, Science in Story, etc., are publications well known to the reading public. Taking all of the Doctor's publications together it is not too much to say that millions of copies have been sold. 52-2t. Personal. Dr. Fant and Mr. J. D. Cash are both improving. We are sorry to learn that Capt. J. P. Aull is seriously ill with liert dis ease. Auditor L. E. Folk will occupy the Mayes house, in front of the Female Academy, this year. Maj. J. P. Kinard has bought the house on the corner of Caldwell and Johnstone Streets, occupied last year by Auditor Folk, and will wove in this veek. Co!. T. J. Lipscomub takes charge of the Penitentiary to-day, January Ist. He has filed his bond in the sum 0, 000, with the following sureties: Jas. N. Lipscomb, M. B. Lipscomb, R. L. McCaughrin, James A. Crotwell, R. C. Chapm.an, J. N. Martin, E. HI. Christian, and G. G. DeWalt. Rev. Thomas G. Herbert, who has been on the Newberry Circuit, with his home in town, for the past four years, has gone to his newv appointment at Sumter as Presiding Elder of Sumter District. He and his interesting family will be greatly missed by the commu nity. Bev. A. M. Chrietzberg, Pastor for the past year of Newberry Station, left Monday for his new appointment, Washington Street Church, Columbia. He is one of the foremost preachers of the S. C. Conference, and while here always had good audiences to listen to his fine sermons. Our best wishes at tend him in his new field of labor. Rev. .1. B. Campbell, the new Pastor f the Methodist Church in town, with Ihis family, arrived to-day. His last work wvas at Union. He is regarded as a good preacher. We hope he will tind Newberry a pleasant home. Rev. John WV. Kelly, the biggest man in the S. C. Conference, who succeeds Rev. Thomas G. Herbert, has moved into the Circuit parsonage on Boundary Street, with his family. He is not un known to the peCople of this County, and the cheers that greeted his appointment when his name was read out for the Newberry Circuit gives him assurance of a hearty welcome to his new charge. You deserve to suffer, and if you lead a miserable, unsatisfactory life in this beautiful world, it is entirely your own fault and there is only one excuse Ifor you-your unreasonable prejudice land skepticism, which has killed thou sands.
