The gin house on Mr. Baruch Dun
can's plantation,which is rented by Lewis
Dcket, was destroyed by fire on Thurs
day morning last just before day. We
learn that there were about 60 bales of
cotton ini thbe building, all of which
we-e consumed, together with tbe press,
a wagon and sorps other articles. *Jt is
thought to have been the work of an
incindiary.
Change of Schedule.
The new schedule of the G. & C.
R. R. went into effect Monday the 11th.
The up passenger and mail train ar
rives at Newberry at 11.20 A. M., and
leaves at 11.23. The down passenger
and mail arrives at 3.07 P. M. and
leaves at 3.10. The trains meet at
Ninety-Six.

Smokey Town.
Thi joeality is all serene-with few
exceptions voted the straight ticket as
all good citizens should do.
About sixty cases of diptheria have
ocurred here during the year Dr.
Langford, wiho treated the entire num
ber, fotnd himself very successful, only

the most part our farmers have come

we have no doubt some of the young
people are fixing things up and will soon

The New Way.
There is an old adage which says that
the course of true love never runs
smooth. We opine that this was true
in the long time ago when ye ardent
lver had nothing but his devoted love,
his soul-lit glances and his sighs to offer,
but not now. Times have changed.
The ingenuity of man has come to the
rscue and it is just as easy as falling
of a log to take a maiden captive.
This is more of a practical age, and
half the soft nothings, tender glanc.es,
and Vesuvian sighs if accompanied
with a pretty, appropriate present will
do the business effectually. Something
of the same sort, altbough it need not
be so expensive, administered to the

to terms too. If a man wants to make
a wife happy or a wife a husband, a
handsome keepsake, something orna
mental or useful is the very thing. And
