Though in his seventy-sixth year he is

To Business Men.
Mr. Theodore DeHon, at present in
our town, has no doubt ere this made
known his object to most of the business
men of the place, The object-the
publication of a Railroad and Business
Directory-is a good one, and will .no
doubt commend itself to the attention
of those particularly interested in
making their business known to the
public. Advertising is well known to
be one of the means, in fa~ct the chiefest,
adopted by all live and progressive
men to bring themselves prominently
before the people, and as such we
recommend Mr. DeHon's project. He
comes here well recommended by
merchants and others elsewhere, where
he has published similar directories.

The Jalapa Barbecue.
It was our good fortune to attend the
closing barbecue of the campaign at
Jalapa, on Saturday last. It was a
pleasant and successful meeting, large
ly attended, and altogether harmonious,
The ladies were out in large number
and smiled and cheered as only the fair
ones of this County can, while the Red
Shirts swarmed and yelled as only the
unterrified Democracy of Newberry
know how to do. It is unnecessary
now at this stage of affairs, with the
election right upon us, to give an ex
tended account of this meeting, and we
will only add that the large and enthu
siastic crowd was addressed by the
County Chairman J. F. J. Cal dwell,
lEsq., Dr. Dorroh, J. Y. Culbreath, Esq.,
Maj. C. H. Suber, and George John
stone, Esq., in eloquent and stirring
speeches. Their several addresses oc
cupied considerable time, and not until
about two o'clock was the invitation to
hash and ribs extended. The dinner
was superb, never was pork or mutton
barbecued in better style, they were
done to a turn, while the hash was pro
nounced by old and experienced judges
the very essence of perfection. It was
so abundant too that no man, woman
or-hl n the ground had any cause

ATTENTION!
Among the books recently adopted by the
State Board, for use in the Public School8 tz
South Carolina, tlhe next five years, are -
Sanford's Analytical Arith
mnetics,
By S. P. SANFORD, A.M., L.L.D., Mercer a
University, Macon, Ga. fi
These Arithmetics have been in accepta- 0
ble use in leading Schools in this State and
other States for several years. Ho, Hugh
S. Thompson, State Superintenden at time
of writing, as now. Principal of Male Acad
emy at Columbia), says of them:
"sanford's Arithmetics age smnperior to
tny that I have seen in' the fulness of the~
examyles', the clearness and simplicity of -
the' analyses, and the accuracy of the rules
and definitions. This opinion is based upon
a full and thorough test in the school-room.
To those teachers who may examine these
Arithmetics with reference to introduction,
I would especially commend the treatment
of Percentage and Profit and Loss. No text
books that I have ever used are so setisfa'c
tory to teachers and pu ii]s."
For nine ty days froi Nov. 1st next, San
ford's Arithmettcs can be obtained of Mr.
