The storm of Wednesday night was the biggest thing of the kind hat Newherrv has seen lately. t cane up very suddenly, with thun ler and lightning. The wind blew uriou.ly and the rain poured down in beets. Considerable danmage was done. n town a good deal of fencing and nani fruit and other kind of trees were dIon'n down. One of the large panes f glass in Mr. Cash's up-stairs front vas shattered by the force of the wind; ol. Lipcomb's store door was blown pen (though it had been securely )cked) and was found in that conli ion by the police; the tin roof on the tore of Bowers & Co. was torn up; large portion of the tin roof, not et conpleted, on Dr. Pratt's new tore was also torn off; and the front vall of Mr. Boozer's, and Wright & ;o;pock's store on Mollohon Row was ulged an inch-and a half or two inch s. This was not caused by the wind, ut by lightning, which struck just over Vright & Coppock's. where the roof )ins the parapet. No serious damage vas done. and the wall has been se ured in its proper position. Great damage was done to corn and otton, the former by the wind blowing down and the latter by washing. The storm was very limited in ex ent; beginning in the North-Eastern >ortion of town, it passed through in a South-Westerly direction, its force be ng almost spent when it reached Mr. .angford's. INCIDENTS OF TIE ST01:I. As evidence of the heavy and rapid all of rain, we give the experience of young clerk, who lives on the other ide of Scott's Creek. Going home he cached the creek just after the heaviest ain. He says when he struck this end f the bridge the water was about two _et below it, when he got to the mid le it was almost covered, and before e got off the other end he was knee eep 1n -,water-the bridge is about enty-five feet long. The young man idn't say whether he had seen any bing stronger than water that night. Mr. Cozuyens, a month or two ago, ought an acre of land from Mr. Cop ock in town and built a small frame w elling-house on it. Afterwards he oncluded he wanted only half an acre, ,d Mr. Coppock took back a half; but be half that Mr. C. took back was the ne that had the house on it. Mr. Coz ,yens was expecting to move his house ver on his side of the line in a few lays. This was however accomplished vithout his aid. Wednesday . night, vhile he and his wife were in the touse, the wind-storm camne, picked be house up and set it down, without jar or jostle in exactly the right lace. So he has nothing to do now ut to remove the rock pillars and set e house upon them. Six or eight young gentlemen of the Vest End were over the other side of h creek "sparking" when the storm ame up. They had to get back by ery circuitous routes, some crossing >y the Calhoun-st. bridge, others by lie bridge just above the railroad. One :entleman was caught on the other ide of CaldwelI Creek, and the water eing high lie rode over on the foot ridge. The bridges across Scott creek on dams Street and Caldwell Street were rushed away by thc rain Wednesday ight. A young gentleman returning rom a visit. finding the b)ridge gone nd the creek up, not wishing to spoil is fine gaiters, pulled them off and aded across bare-foot. PERSONAL.-B. J. Ramnage, Esq., as returned from a visit to Florida, oking well. J. F. J. Caid well. Esq., left for Glenn prings, Saturday, where he expects spend a portion of the summer. Mr. Cline left Tuesday for Cedar prings, to attend the closing exercises f that institution. Too hot to loaf. The matrimonial market is dull. Eggs still sell for 15 cents per dozen. The camp-meeting season approach es. Ruta Bagas should be sown this month. What Newberry wants now is an ice factory. A trapeze is the latest sensation of the small boys. The Knights of Honor are increasing their numbers. A great many English sparrows are seen on the streets. Some of our citizens have had ripe peaches out of their orchards. Newberry's crack gardeners are eat ing cabbage of their own raising. Mrs. Jas. W. Williams. of Newberry, died in Greenville the 19th inst. The public well has been cleaned out, and the water is just splendid. A very large o'possuni and a pet fox were on the streets for sale Saturday. The bank bill man has taken his de parture to more congenial climes. The time piece mentioned last week is offered for sale at cost, freight off. It is cheap at half the price. Chickens are now coming in and go off at 15 cents-they are small at that price. The coolest place in the afternoons is the South-East corner of the Court House. The soda fountain keeps up a contin ual "fiz." Burns doesn't care how hot it gets. A gentleman just returned from Co lumbia says the city is duller than Gravel Town. Jude Northrop has called a special term of Court for New berry County, to begin the 2nd day of July. Messrs. MeFall & Pool will move in to the new building at their former stand the first of September. The firemen drilled Wednesday eve ning. They handle the ladders with the skill of veterans. The county tax is "not to exceed 3 mills," instead of 2, as we said last week. Solicitor B. W. Ball and Clerk of Court M. E. Babb, of Laurens, are in town. The police shot a dog Thursday morn ing that had been bitten the night be fore by an unknown stray cur. The bill to provide for the new Coun ty of Ninety-Six doesn't propose the taking of any part of this county.. The eleven iron pillars for the front of the Mower buildings have arrived, and will be put in position this week. Farmers in this county sowed cow peas abundantly. So great was the demand that they wvent up to $1.25 per bushel. Flour .is still coming down in price. If the wheat crop turns out as well as wvas anticipated even an Editor can have biscuit Sundays. The storm of Wednesday night last aforded a line opportunity to burglars and sneak thieves. Strange that they did not avail themselvcs of the chance. Thle negro brute Davenport, against whom a Coroner's Jury found a verdict of guilty of killing his step-child three weeks ago, has not yet been arrested. The Ninety-Six Guardazn says: "Prof. W. H. Evans has a large class at this p)lace, and is organizing one in the neighborhood of Haltiwvanger's school-house." A Mollohonite asks us what has be come of the Newberry Peg Factory. Alas! like many other good things tile sugar mill, for instance-it has died out. A mad dog was killed at Dead Fall on Friday last by Mr. J. Fred Schum pert. He says that he shot at the dog once in his yard, and four times in the public road, each shot taking effect. The few gardens in town visited by the cyclone of Wednesday night pre sent a very dilapidated appearance. Patches of corn were twisted and tan gled beyond undoing. General Green has taken advantage of the late frequent rains and is now worrying farmers. It is hoped that they will lay him in the shade shortly. Every effort will be made to defeat him. The summer heat is thinning out our population. Sonme are returning to their homes North, and others are seek ing cool plaLces under the mountains, and a few have gone to Mineral Springs for health. Iln spite of frequent notices made that we must have pay for all work done at this office, there ar some who still ex poet it gratis. We cannot pay rent, buy paper and material, and pay for labor without money. Wanted. 100 subscribers of 810 each, cash down, to carry the IIRALD through till Fall; dlividends will come to them after many days. Tile money need not be paid in until after the blackberry season. We are living just now on dumplings. Mr. Jeff. Lane's new wooden store, next to Crede's, is nearing completion. It will be twvo stories high and four feet longer than the one burned down there at the late fire. The work is being done under the supervision of Mr. Cline. A Brook'yn paper reports that one Mr. R , while excavating on the shore of Newtown creek, struck a spring of mineral water. le took a bottleful of it to a German chemist for analysis, telling him he should ad vertise the result, and convert the place into a regular Baden-Baden. The chemist, havinz been favored with a sight of the location of the spring, reiirarked, dryly, that he would send his analysis written out in com mon language, which people would understand better than such scientifice termis as chloride cf sodium, oxide of iron, etc. Mr. R -soo receiv ed the following: ANALYSIS OF THE NEWLY. Mr. R- has concluded to post pone advertising the spring. - -+- { C THE COLOSSAL BRONZE STATUE OF VICTORY which stands in the Park, at i Lowell, before the tomb of the first sol diers that fell in the revolution, is ia lasting and beautiful tribute of art. It is one of the first objects sought by strangers visiting our sister city, which . indeed many visit purposely to see this elegant object of high art. It was ob tained from the King of Bavaria by Dr. J. C. Ayer, to whom his Imajesty was especially gracious in acknowledgment r of what his remedies are reputed to have done for the suffering sick. It was donated by the Doctor to the City of Lowell as a permanent and speaking emblem of the victories both of Science i and Arms.-Hagerstown (Md.) Press.
