RAIN.-After nearly five weeks Ldrought we have been visited wvith: freshing showers. Friday afternc there was a tremnendouS~ windi-StOr MArI AGE.-Next to being happy oneself is to see somebody else so, and that is, no doubt, the reason why every body likes to see a wedding. It has a fascination for the old as well as the young, and a happy effect on the minds c. :nd feelings of all. It is said that ;a- married people repeat their own honey moon after every wedding they see; a- they feel younger, become more loving and kind, the dreaded broomstick rests awhile from its accustomed duties, and ce even a bald-headed Benedict has been known to dispense for a season with er the use of Ayer's Hair Vigor after his better half had thus been so vividly and impressively reminded of her solemn 0- vows to "love, honor and obey" her liege rt lord so long as they both shall live. r- And to those still among that unhappy number who have "no one to love, - none to caress," it is as a harbinger of r- the happy time to come, to which they Vd look forward with such bright expect ?? ancy. Speaking of marriage reminds us of er the brilliant event of this character that e- transpired at the Lutheran Church 7s Wednesday evening. From the bright r illumination, the graceful arches and festoons of evergreens, and the smiling, .d eager, expectant faces of Newberry's zx fairest and handsomest, it was evident sd that something of no ordinary interest e. was about to take place there. > "Even a child might understand r Cupid had business on his hand." The entire decorations were tasteful and elegant, as everything the ladies do - always is; but what chiefly attiacted the attention and admiration of the id spectators (before the principal actors es appeared) was a pretty semi-circle of it green letters on the wall above the pul ?' pit, making the beautiful and touching sentence, "Wbither thou goest, I will d go." and enclosing the letters "HR." id which an old bachelor translated, d Happy Robertson. En passant, there is a bit of history connected with this ia same semi-circle that illustrates most strikingly the difference between nature , and art. The task of thus arranging ry the sentence was first intrusted to a young gentleman distinguished alike for his urbanity and his intimate know 1e ledge of mathematics. When he had tacked it to the wall it looked precisely like an iscsceles triangle struck by light sd ning. Of course, it wouldn't do. Then a young lady took it in hand, and before the young man had time t.o out and to bide himself she had constructed a et curve as faultless as the rainbow. Well, the crowd kept gathering till every seat was filled on floor and gal ls lery; many persons had to stand. The "s polite and handsome ushers, Messrs. -d Ewart and Simmons, did the best they could under the circumstances to secure , good positions for everybody; but, not r withstanding, they incurred the mortal r' enmity of numerous young beaux. It Shappened on this wise :-when a young couple came in the gentleman was >r invited to take a back seat, while his mn dear girl was escorted to a seat in front, as where she could get a commanding >r view of the situation. And thus wvas lost to -him the inestimable advantage of sitting with her during the interest ie ing ceremony, when speaking glances e and soft whispers might have had a f most telling and happy effect. A tall "s young disciple of Esculapius was spe cially grieved by this unexpected ar rangement, and his face, erstwhile so '1 radiant, assumed an expression that s would have done credit to the chief tmourner at a funeral. e,At the appointed hour the long-ex pected party arrived, and 'to the music ;of the choir entered the church in pcouples, and marching up the aisle of took their positions in front of the at chance], in the following order :-Mfr. W. A. Frizelle with Miss Nathalie Mazyck, Mr. J. W. Coppock with Miss Katie F. Mayer, Mr. A. S. McMorries with Miss ~Alice Mayer, Mr. F. WV. Fant with Miss Leila Kingsmore, Mr. J. E. Brown with Miss Lila Boozer, Mr. IH. St.-A. O'Neill with Miss Sadie E. Crossley, Mr. D. P. Robertson with as Miss Drucie Aull, Mr. Edward Robert id son with Miss Julia B. Hunter, and Dr. ie Peter Robertson with Miss Alice L. 2- Hunter. The last couple took their n. places under the marriage b'ell in front of the minister, Rev. H. W. Kuhns, -and before the admiring spectators had 'time to feast their eyes upon the beauty Kof the bride and her maids the deed r- as done, the Gordian knot was tied, a- and they who came in as two went-Sat 3as one. The bridal party, with a few friends, a then re.paired to the house of the bride's .e mother, where an elegant supper ' awaited them. In a short time the aband went around and played several fine pieces in compliment to the happy mThe bride, who was very much beloved on account of her many accomplishments u- and her amiable disposition, was the re al eipient of a number of elegant and hand 1e some presents, among them a handsome re pair of gold bracelets and set f jewelry or with coral setting, from the groom; a a magnificent silver service, embracing ad six pieces, (from Tiffany. N. Y.) from the groomsmen; two silver cake tsands, very handsome; silver castor, silver id butter-dish, silver cup, gold-lined; two n- sets of solid silver teaspoons. set of as solid silver tablespoons, two solid silver .i sugar spoons, two silver butter-knives, y solid; half dozen silver napkin rings, be solid ; silver mustard spoon, solid; two toilet sets, Bohemian ware - from oh friends in Newberry and Charleston. We wish the bride and groom long life and much joy. tTHoMPSON, Dentist, Square above Post Oflice. 35-tf. sk A ride on the rail, however short it re may be, never fails to present something vo of an interesting character. Going rs, lown to Columbia Thursday afternoon last we were convinced that though im migration is slow, population is never a- :theless rapidly increasing and that our r. : waste places will eventually be filled. ~Getting on board, we found it difficult yto procure a seat, all those midship dwere occupied with what appeared to e be bundles-a natural supposition, as be they were watched over by a lady, and tevery one who ever travels is aware that a lady is invariably accompanied ne by numberless band-boxes, bundles, ad bags or boxes. We fell to thinking what were in all those packages. Soon t one began to move, it bad life in it, and id- the lady carefully taking of the wraps, revealed a pretty six months old baby. r Directly another moved, and another A till all were in motion, showing that >ut the bundles were composed of children .e -six in all, and the oldest only six years of age. The country is safe, thought we. Nowv if it would rain that of the parched earth might be refreshed e- and good crops made sure, and these on little mouths filled, and the Legislature m,. ad journ all would be serene. Thinking -- ~ ~ WI~.~ ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. Green apples are ripe. C The mad dog has subsided. n sc Wheat pans out well, And farmers now eat biscuit not- el withstanding the Eastern war; ai The city folks, however. must be con tent with corn bread a little while lon ger. d: There is not so much dust now as c there was last week. W Some heavily-laden peach trees were la blown down Friday afternoon. M Dr. J. W. Folk has completed his tc house at Jalapa and moved into it. a1 Raspberries were on the market last b week at 10 cents a quart. Spring oats and spring chickens were w not altogether a success this year. m The long, hot suinmer days have come, te The dullest of the year. w The doctors report the health of town cl and county good. Our Mollohon reporter has been neg- tl lecting his duties this week. C Messrs. Keene & Austin are putting th the tin roof on Mr. Simeon Pratt's new ni brick store. The Odd Fellows' Ball will come off S: to-morrow (Wednesday) night. A H good time is anticipated. th The first blackberries of the season were on the streets Saturday at 5 cents a quart. The Council fined Allen Hargrove, colored, $10 at their meeting the 5th ni inst., for keeping a disorderly house. w The wheat crop of this county this b year is the best since the war. So say o the farmers. N Mr. J. M. Crawford has prepared pl for the summer by erecting an awning in to his store. w A young lady left Newberry for Ken- a tucky last week. She expects to make in m her home there. T The Churches were slimly attended tb on Sunday last in consequence of the pE rain. to It was a long time between drinks, uI but thirsty vegetation had a good one f on Sunday, and is much revived. of Money is exceedingly scarce. Some ch people aver they have seen none in a m long time. wi Seventy pounds of fish were dragged or out of Mendenhall's pond on Tuesday ba last, among which were a few very o fine trout. b Farmers who planted corn in their creek and river bottoms report that cut- pr worms have cut down nearly the entire stand. The people of WValhalla have no idea th of hiding their light under a bushel. fo There is a bill before the Legislature to " charter the Walhalla College. t A Safe Key has been found and de- i posited at this office. The loser can have it by calling and paying fifty cents for this notice. A Innumerable chicken heads in the street close by the principal hotel in L this place afford indisputable evidence si: that chicken is on the bill of fare. C. Though Mrs. Wicker's store has not gi a commanding appearance, the work M on it has been well done, the inside ~ walls especially being finished off in a very neat style. James Ratley has opened his shaving saloon one door north of his old plaee, where everything is as clean and bright as a new silver dollar. His old patrons I are invited to visit him. Al Messrs. M. Foot and B. H. Cline B< have gone up. This was effected by G raising the floor of their stores two feet higher from the ground. They haven't gone up the spout by a long sight. Cherries sell at 25 cents for four quarts, or one dollar per bushel. Mr. Noah Martin brought a large quantity, into town Thursday and had to dispose of most of them at 5 cents a quart. Sa The summer practice of closing stores y at six o'clock in the evening has already se been commenced by merchants in other places. The merchants of Newberry should do likewise. Give the clerks a little recreation. C The little store of Mr. Singley's at around the corner, known as Dickert's, has been repaired by Mr. Cline, and now looks much better than it did be fore the fire. Mr. Henry Burns has moved into it with soda fountain and confectioneries.., If you have found anything, lost any- ef thing, want anything, want to get up r anything, or desire to make known anything of interest-the columns of de the HERALD afford eXcellent opportu- bi nity for a small pecuniary considera- te tion. Try it. 0 When the new County of Ninety-Six as is formed there will be no necessity to t go to the expense of building a Court ~ House. The Gu.ardi.an says there are in several Court Houses in "96" already di -the houses of men with pretty daugh- U ters. Croquet is not so fashionable as it th used to be. The reason, no doubt, is .B that, with the present style of pin-backs, tC the ladies would have to stand on the ball with both feet at the same time, which would be rather inconvenient P is We have secured the contract for tt publishing that map, and we propose fc to sell it to our regular customers at ir reduced rates as a Turkish war map, in ci which Mr. P.'s spring branch will fig- p, ure as the river Pruth, and Scott's it creek as the blue, rolling Danube-.r A subscriber on being asked to settle fi: his bill said he'd "bear it in mind." We b like that. That he will bear it in mind sc is consoling. The thought of his for getting it would be painful. We trust Ithat he and others will bear it so con stantly in mind as not to be able tos rest until payment is made. C SENSIBLE ADVICE. ATTENTION, BACHELORS. - A few ghts since while in Columbia we ere thrown into the company of a wvy of char ming young ladies. We und that they were attentive readers - the newspapers and especially of the ewberry HERALD-which paper it is easant to know is highly appreciated that city-and that they were pretty ell posted as to Newberry's local fairs. Naturally, the conversation ran to the highly interesting subject of atrimony and the late marriages here. !ey knew all about them. They ought Newberry a good place and culiarly adapted to affairs of this kind, which we assented. "They had been fortunate-were there any good look bachelors left in Newberry?" Lots 'em, was answered. What clappi ng hands at this. "What would be our ances?" Could not be better. To ake a long and interesting story short, e were advised and entreated by every e of the fair damsels to interview the chelors of Newberry and advise them the opportunity afforded them of ing made happy, and we extend the vitation now without further cere ony, that they go down and secure 'izes in the matrimonial lottery. The regular secretion and flow of the gas c juices, and of the bile which the use of ostetter's Stomach Bitters promotes, are ~ects which conduce materially to the storation of health, when the s.vstem is sordered. Food is not digested in the dys ptic stomach because the gastric fluid is ticient, superatundant or vitiated; the liver comes congested and the bowels constipa d because the supply of bile is inadequate -misdirected. The Bitters rectifies all this, id removes every ill consequence of non similation and bilious irregularity. Fur ermore, it stimulates the action of the kid ys, by which impurities are, so to speak, rained from the blood, and any tendency the urinary organs to grow sluggish and sordered counteracted. Whether it be ;ed as a means of regulating gastric or lions secretion, and relieving the overload bowels, or to promote complete, and erefore healthful, urination, Hostetter's itters uiy be relied upon with confidence accomplish the end in view. 23-4t.
