It is a convenient ~ mode of saying that the time for which the paper is paid has expired, and a s renewal is desired. It means in some other cases that the subscriber is badly in arrears and money is wanted. This r latter class of subscribers will recollect without great mental effort that in the r spring or may be the summer money was scarce, but the paper could not be diepensed with and was asked for with f the promise to pay in the faill. There is a great deal of stealing going on in the county. HOUSE AND CHILD BURNE.-FieldI Foster, colored, had his house burned down one night last week. His little1 child, three months old, was burned up in it. "The poor ye have always withyou." From the report of the County Coin- f missioners, it appears that the Poori House cost the county during the fiscal I year just ended $2125. We are requested by the ladies of the defunct "Book Club" to say that they will deem it a favor if any one having books belonging to said Club will re turn them as soon as possible to Mr. T. J. McCrary, at Mr. Tarrant's store. The three County Commissioners sat 82 days, at $3 each, per day, making $738. They traveled 6354 miles at five cents a mile, making $317.70, travel- I ing expenses; having got, therefore, as their share of the taxes, $1055.70. M ERSONALe-Mrs. E. M. N. and Stephen Fowles, spent a day in Newberry last week, on -her return from Flat Rock to her home in Charleston. -The State Fair will open December 5. Articles sent for exhibition, when exhibitors do not accompany them, should be sent to the Secretary, Thos. W. Holloway, Columbia, and advice sent by mail. If possible all entries should be made not later than Monday, 4th Dec.; earlier if possible. Rail Road fare 2 cents per mile, each way. Ho-t tel rates reduced 25 per cent. during Fair week. We do not propose to criticise the County Commissioners' Report; no doubt it is correctly made; but it would -have been more satisfactory, perhaps, if they had made a statement of receipts, ~ We call special attention to the arti cle in this issue copied from the Month ly Report of the Department of Agri culture for October 1876, describing a machine lately invented for converting seed cotton directly into yarns. The machine will be on exhibition at the approaching State Fair, and will show to the planters how their cotton can be ginned, carded and spun at home. "PENsIONs."-There was an act pass ed March 13, 1872, "for the relief of widows and orphans of persons killed because of their political opinions," that S a disgrace to the Statute Book and a a eavy burden upon the counties affected by it. A special tax of 1-2 a mill is Lvied fdr this purpose, to be applied as Follows: 810 per month to each such widow as long as she remains unmar :ied, and $6 per month to each such )rphan till he or she arrives at the age >f 15 years. We hope to see this piece >f Radical legislation repealed at once. By the way, how many persons have )een killed in this County on account )f their political opinions? This is not sking much. Columbia had five fights in one day, vhile Newberry cannot hoast one in ive days. Newberry has always been n the background. Very fewv farmers in from the coun ry last week, and the supposition is hat they are so~ving grain-~vheat, THE LATEST FRO.M COLUM BIA. UNITED STATES FORCES IN POS SION OF THE STATE HOUSE! BAYONETS VS. BALLOTS! About 12 o'clock last night, while the inhabitants of the peaceful city of Co lumbia, in the down-trodden State of South Carolina, were enjoying their sweet slumbers, dark deeds were being concocted by the agents of Grantismn and revolutionary Republicanism. Instead of waiting for the broad light of day to shine upon their deeds, at the dark and dismal hour of 12, a company of United States troops was marched into the State House, and guards placed at the doors to prevent the entrance of those who were not of the select. In brief, soldiers of the United States army are now in possession of the capi tol of the State of South Carolina. in a time of profound peace, to enforce Grantism and Chamberlainism. [Register, Nov. 28. The Legislature met to-day (Ttesday), but as we go to press no report of their action has been received. WASHINGTON. D. C., Nov. 27. President Grant writes to Secretary Cameron. that Chamberlain is now, beyond all controversy, Governor of South Carolina, and remains so until te new Governor is legally inaugu -ated, and directs him to sustain Cham berlain against domestic violence until >therwise ordered. In forwarding this :o Gen. Ruger, Secretary Cameron ;ays: "Advise with Governor Cham berlain and dispose the troops so as to :arry out the spirit of President Grant's >rder." Judge Bond declares that he is in Columbia one week before his court ineets, solely for the purpose of exam ning into the business to come before him, and without any other object whatever. TALLAHASSEE, FLA., Nov. 27 -The anvassing Board met to-day. The Republican Electors filed a protest a g a i n s t Attorney-General Cocke's Dem.) sitting as a member of the Board on the ground that he had given % decision already by telegraphing that ;he State had gone Democratic. The rotest was entered and the Board pro :eeded to business, admitting six gen lemen from abroad and six local poli icians from each.side. Casualties Throughout the State. Jno. Picket was cut in the hand by eo. McIntosh, in a liquor saloon in oinumbia, the 21st instant. A colored man named Elisha Hiar -is, from Edgefield, was shot in the eg and the bone broken, by Mr. La ar Starke. at Fine's Saloon, Colum ia, the 21st instant, Geo. Shrewsbury, Chief of the De ective Police of Charleston, was shot nd killed by Frank Jobr'ston. Clerk f the Guard House, the night of the 20th instant. Fritz, bar-tender at Fine's Saloon, olumbia. was shot in the knee by thc ccidental discharge of a pistol, last Wednesday morning. While F. E. F-ary and Win. Berry vere hunting near Branchville, last Wednesday, the former was accident ally shot by the latter. His recovery s doubtful. Thos. Dent, son of the Sheriff of' Rihand County, was shot and fatally ounded last Wednesday night at Fine's saloon, Columbia, by Jno. R. ochran, Senator from Anderson. On the morning of the 21st instant wo brothers by the name of Samson ere standing together in a store in Charleston, when one was accidentally ounded by the other, and has since died. The strongest argument which can be urg ed against the advisability of administering such corrosive and nerve-destroying poisons as arsenic and quinine for intermittent and remittent fevers, is the vastly superior success in the prevention and cure of such diseases of a medicine which is the very antipode of the above named d7ugs, both in repect of its compositiou and the results wrought by it.
