Greneker has shown us a Centennial relic. It is a silver crescent used on a cap worn during theRevolut ion, with the inscription, "Libertaspotior Attention is called to the school no tice of Mrs. J. H. Gaillard. Mrs. Gail lard is a competent teacher, and we hope her school this session will be larger than heretofore. We call attention to thie removal of Edward Scholts to the former store of J. F.Speck. We all know him tobe a competent workman and further re eommendation is not necessary. Attenition Is called to the pro Sfessional card of Dr. Wallace. He has removed his residence to the house re cently built on Calhoun street, two doors below the Presbyterian Church. His office is at Dr. Fant's drug store. NEw BALE OF COTTON.-On Satur day the first bale of the season was brought in by Mr. J. J. Lane and bought by T. F. Harmon. The bale weighed 385 lbs. and was classified as low middling. It sold for 10 5-8 cents. The State Executive Committee of the Democratic party have appointed the speakers and the time and place for the coming campaign. Gen, Hampton and others willbe here on the 14th of September. Then is the time for the -grand rally in this County. The Y. I. D. C., held their regular meeting on Monday night. After the regular business was transacted, Jas. Williams, col'd., a member of a Demo eratic Club in Columbia, was called upon to address the meeting. which he did in a very good speech which was loudly applauded. In our exchanges we find the follow ing from the White Sulphur: The best story-teller-Colonel Suber. Colonel Suber, of South Carolina, the envy of all the boys, because the favorite of all the girls; always agreeable, and dances the fancy dances amazingly well; his only jewel was old, but hand some. We- all know it here and the Vir -ginfans are very late finding it out. During the recess -of the County Democratic Convention on Tuesday, the 22d instant, the citizens assembled in the Court House were addressed by the Rev. A. W. Moore, of Laurens, on the subject of Labor Reform. At the conclusion of his address on mo Stion of.Y. J. Pope, the following res ohution was unanimously adopted: Besolved, That the thanks of this meeting be returned to the Rev. A. W. Moore for ~his able. lucid, and eloquent plea in behalf of Labor Re form. Mr. J. 0. Peoples has purchased the stoek of jewelry, silverware, &c., for merly owned by J. F. Speck. Mr. Peoples is too well known by every body in the County to need an extended notice, but it will suffice to say that all who wish anything in his line had bet. ter give him a call and satisfaction will follow. Committees were appointed and arrangements made for taking the census of the township, ac cording to the scheme of the County Executive Committee. Quite a large number of names were added to the membership of the club. After the regular business of the meeting was over, upon being called on, the club was addressed at considerable length by President Epting, G. G. DeWalt and George Johnstone, Esqs., and by one of the colored members of the club, all of whose remarks were kindly received. There is another club formed in this township which is largely democratic. Arrive at Clin'>n.................8 15 P. M. THE NEWBERRY RIFLEs.-This club met on Thursday night last, to perfect its organization. A full corps of officers were elected for the ensuing year, and the club established on a secure footing. The following are the officers: "'President-T. J. Lipscomb. 1st Vice-President-0. L. PERSECUTED ON ACNVT OF POI ICs.-It has been rumored that a col ored man, who a week or so ago joined the Democratic elub of this place, has been persecuted by persons of his own color for the step he has taken. His preacher threatened to turn him out of the church, and others by their petty persecutions have made him so misera ble that he says he will have to with draw. The Democratic clubs guarantee protection to all colored persons who join their bodies, but it is one thing to guarantee and another to carry out the guaranty. Some immediate steps ought to be taken to stop these outrages, and if soldiers come here the first thing they ought to do is to protect the Demo cratic colored man in his rights. The ostracism which is imposed on a colored man for joining our party is to him much worse than the ostracism which .we infiict on those of our race who affiate with the other party. On Wednesday last Mr. George Lang ford, in Tiding by a branch, noticed two snakes apparently fighting. The water splashed around in their evolutions, and the occurrence being so unusual, he de termined if possible to capture them. He accordingly procured a forked stick and succeeded in drawing them out of the water. When he got them on the land they proved to be, one a water moccasin and the other a king snake; the king snake had wrapped himself around the body of the moccasin and was gradually crushing him to death. Mr. Langford brought both to town, the king snake still irrapped around the other. A crowd soon collected to see the phenomenon. The king snake un abashed by the audience wrapped its folds closer and closer around the un happy m'occasin, which after a short time yielded to the inevitable and with a sigh gave up the ghost. The king snake immediately loosed himself, and strange to relate, stretched the mocca sin out at full length, caught hold of him about half an inch from his head and commenced to swal low th~e moccas'in. The crowd in the meanwhile had in creased, but the king snake undisturbed proceeded to make a square meal out of a brother reptile three or four times its own size. The act of swallowing was of course slow, but by degrees the king snake's jaws expanded and the mocca sin's head was the first thing to disap-. pear; after the head had disappeared the chief work seemed to be over for the king snake, andithe swallowing pro ceeded at the rate of about one inch of the moccasin's body in every eight min utes. Crowds upon crowds hastened to witness the performance. The king snake still persevered, and had swal lowed a little over twelve inches of the moccasin, when a gentleman in the crowd stroked him on the back, which acted like an emetic, for the king snake immediately repudiated all that it had swallowed and showed no disposition to renew his meal. There can be no doubt that if let alone he would have swallowed all. This occurrence is no "snake story," in t.e usual acceptance of the term, but is really a bona fide affair and was Iwitnessed by the majority of the citizens of this place. The king snake was about the size of' an ordinary man's fnger in width and aboig garsty-four inches in length; the moccasim was about twenty inches in length and two inches thick in the largest part. N~eariv every man. women and child ABOUT THE TOWN ANW COuTY Lots of drummers in town last week. The County ticket is approved of by all. The crops around this section are looking splendid. Scott's creek was higher Friday than it has been for years. A protracted meeting was held at Snyrna Church last week. The duleet tone of the feminine muns quito is still heard in the land. The extra term of the Court of Com mon Pleas opens on the 18th of Septem ber. We hope that the hot weather last weck was only the expiring gasp of this oppressive summer. Any of the illustrated papers. or any of the English periodicals, can be had at the Herald Bookstore. The editor of the Vicksburg Herald says, "It is still hot enough to burn the ears off a brass monkey." One of the heaviest rains of the sea son occurred on Friday. It was needed badly, and we hope it did not come too late. The County Convention had a very harmonious meeting. The ticket nomi nated will command the respect of the County. The Hook and Ladder Company paraded on Wednesday last. They made quite a presentable appearance in their red shirts. Major C. H. Suber and A. J. Mc Daughrin, Esq,, have returned from the Virginia springs and the Centennial both looking well. Gen. Hampton's trip from Columbia o the mountains was one grand ova ion. He was enthusiastically cheered whenever he appeared. Several merchants went North last week to lay in their fall and winter tock. The Centennial will doubtlesa onopolize a good portion of the time while absent. The agricultural implements, other vise known as "shoemaker's tools," dias Remington rifles, are still lying n state in the cell of the calaboose, waiting further developments. Watermelons and grapes are getting ;carce, but we hope that the seductive winter apple -will soon makes its ap >earance, so as to make the loss of vatermelons more easy to bear by the Truit-craving boys. .Mr. Win. M. Kinard brought in town ast week a stalk of corn with seven ars on it. Mr. Kinard says he has patch, all the stalks of which are early as prolific as the sample shown. ~hat is the kind of corn we need in this Jounty. Rev, Wmn. Hayne Leavell, son of 301. J. R. The Radical party seem wry quiet iow, as far as mass meetings are con-1 ~erned, but we fear that midnight meet ngs are being held.
