If you have forgotten to send the tender missive you have still the op prniyof doing so by selecting one fromi the fine stock to be found at the, HERALD Book Store. They will be kept there until the expiration of the term of the Court of Love which St. -Valentine holds until the Ides of March. PARTNERSmP-We are pleased to notice that Mr. S. S. Howell and Mr. R. H. Screven, the former the late junior partner of the commission house of Kinsman & Howell, and the latter its bookkeeper, have entered into partner ship for the purpose of conducting a commission business in Charleston. Their office is on Accommodation Wharf, where they will be happy to receive their friends from this section, and from whom they respectfully solicit consign ments. We take pleasure in recom mending them to the public. The time for serenading is close at hand, and we think it but right to warn young ladies to be careful lest accidents happen to them like the one related be low by the Union-Herald, which lately happened in Columbia: A pensive young man, while singing "Come,, love, come," beneath his dul. cina's window, the other night. had love, music. wind and everything else knock ed out of him by something in a long, white garment, which fell out of a chamber window. It proved to be his lady-love, who, in her eagerness to know who was serenading her, leaned too far over the window sill, lost her balance and fell. NEW LODGE.-CreSeent Lodge, I. 0. G. T., was organized at Helena, on Monday night last, by D. D. G. W. C. T. Marshall, assisted by Rev. W. D. Rice, J. W. Taylor, Jas. Packer~, J. N. Bass and T. A. Thompson. The fol. lo-gofcr eeisald L owing offiecesW~ wereinsalle o S. W. Neece, W. C. T.; Carrie Woot TAx ExENSIo.-We are pleascd to state that Capt. Jesse C. Smith, Treas urer, has received authority to extend the time for the payment of taxes until the 10th of March. This timely exten sion will afford relief to many who are unable jnst now to pay, and we trust that the entire tax will be paid in by that time, that there may be no neces sity to attach the penalty. NEWSPAPERS.-Daniel Webster said: "Small is the sum that is required to patronize a newspaper, and well re warded is the patron, I care not how humble or unpretending the gazette which he takes. It is next to impossible tofill a sheet with printed matter without putting something inlo it that is worth the subscription pice. Every parent, whose son is away at school, should supply him with a newspaper. I well remember what a marked difference there was between those of my school mates who had and those who had not access to newspapers. Other things being equal, the first were always superior to the last in debate, composi tion and intelligence. tf ANNoYIG.-Frequent complaints are made to us by subscribers who have their papers left at the Post office that they fail to receive them, the Postmaster saying that they have been taken out. That the times are demoralized we know, and that the poison has inocu lated people to a large extent, and roguery is winked at pretty generally, but this thing of stealing a man's news paper is a horribly mean and low of fence. How can we expect reform in great matters when perhaps the very men who cry out for it loudest commit practices of the lowest character. Let ] this paper thieving be stopped at once. ] If the HERALD is so popular and must be read, subscribe for it like honest men, and let those who have paid for the paper enjoy it. The following composition will be recognized by the little chap who wor ied it out of his brain, but how we got hold of it must be none business of his: RABriTs AND HArEs.-Rabbits have. long ears and big eyes and long hind legs. They are either white, black or spotted. They burrow in the ground, and there raise their little ones. Hares are brown. They do not bur row in the ground like rabbits, but live in the old fields in the broomsedge, and make little nests under bamboo briers. They clean it so prettily in front of the nest, and in the back of the nest they make a ]ittle hole, and stay back in it to keep hid from hawks and other things. Boys love to catch hares, be cause it is fun, and they are goodto eat. Visrrons.-The down train on Wed nesday brought in quite an addition to the male population of our town. Whether they were driimmers, collec tors, or members of a commission on a visit of inspection, we have been unable to learn. We are rather inclined to the opinion that they did not belong to that interesting class known as drum mers, for the reason that they were nearly all low in iesh, and looked as if they had been undergoing a season of fasting and prayer, while the drummer is usually in splendid' condition, fat and cheeky. It may be, though,~ that they were drummers and had passed through much tribulation, and had not been able to get much of the stuff so eagerly sought after. Poor fellows, whatever their calling they did not look happy. We trust they will not go farther and fare worse. Pcaric INSTALLATION.-At a puplic installation held at Sympathy Lodge, No. 67, I. 0. G. T., Bouknight a Ferry, on Saturday, 5th instant, the folowing officers were installed to serve the en ing term: W. C. T.-J. N. Bass. W. V. T.-Mrs. E. Rush. W. S.-J. P. Hardy. W. T.-Jesse Riley. W. F. S.-W. Gibson. W. M.-James Berry. . W. I. G.-Mrs. Jane Gibson. W. 0. G.-R. H. Gibson. W. C.-S. I. Riley. W. R. H. S.-Miss M. Berry. W. L. H. S.-Mrs. T. Dean. Delegate to Grand Lodge-J, N. Bass. Alternate-Joseph Berry. The Grand Lodge will meet at Green ville, S. 0., on the 4th Tuesday in April next.-Progressive Age. ABOUT THE TowN AND COUNTY. The weather clerk paid off one or two past due installments last week-and as we go to press it is all serene. The town mule is busy hauling sand. Trade is just middling, and why it is so passes comprehension, for it is gene rally supposed that there is plenty of money in the country. If parties holding money would pay their debts those who have no moneyI now would soon feel easy, and a better time would be experienced. Try it. IMr. Thomasson, of this town. is an auctioneer of first rate ability. It does any one good to hear him cry at a sale. Monday was Valentine's Day, and many a little tender missive was sent on its way rejoicing. It is not too late to send them out, remember. A fine assortment is still on hand at the HER ALD Book Store. For ten cents any body can be made happy. Several new cottages have lately been erected in the town-and the signs are favorable. It is about time to plant Irish pota toes-some persons plant them in the moon-others in the ground. The vegetable garden should now begin to claim attention-have your ground well prepared, and when the season favors you will be ready to put in seed. Very conducive to the happiness of a ome is a pretty flower garden-and no one is too poor or too busy to have one. Attend to the flower garden if ome other interest has to be neglected. The thing of first importance which we would impress on the mind is to mbscribe for your County paper. Do not negleet this if you would make two ouls happy-yourself and the editor. This will be the most interesting year politically since the surrender-reforms wre the order of the day, and the fight between honesty and rascality will be evere-take a paper and keep posted. Items of interest from all portions of the County are solicited-send along main features, names and dates and we will put them in proper shape for the benefit of the reader. There has been no monkey show du ring the week, and the street loafers ave had nothing to cheer their lonely ours. The neighborhood in and around Baltimore Corner is becoming an intol rable nuisance by reason of the idle, noisy crowd of boys who congregate here. Colon, in another column, has written about it. The Council has not erected that amp yet about which so many citizens ave been writing. We learn that another citizen wants ight and speaks of putting up a lamp )n his corner at his own expense. When he does the reader will know who he is by its location. A point which needs impressing on ;ome minds is that it is out of taste to isk the editor who wrote this article or ;hat communication. Don't do it any nore. If there is anything of a per ;onal character published, and the tthor is demanded with a view to a ight, the information will be given, but ot otherwise. Another thing both indelicate and inoying is for a visitor in a printing ffice to look at anything which does ct concern him. Everything is con sidered private until the paper is pub lished. Buckwheat and various other good hings can be found at the store of Ramage & Son. It is a rare thing to see a bad case of Irnk on our streets on public days. N~o matter how great the crowd good order and sobriety prevails. This speaks well for Newberny. We well remem ber when bloody noses and worse used to mark Sale-days. Bear it in mind that an Iowa court tas decided that it is not legal for a far mer to hitch his wife up with a mule, no matter how much he may be behind in plowing. Court House Square was made lively with the gambols of a drove of horses and mules on Thursday last. Several droves have passed through lately. Sales have been limited. A. D. Lovelace has drawn up his stakes from this end of the town and planted them on the corner of Pratt and [cKibben streets. He should havre asked the HERALD'S advice before tak ing such a step. The Southern Life Insurance Compa ny, which has recently gone where the woodbine twineth, hurt Newberry to some extent. Some think its GENER AL management was not good. A merchant down town sells more of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup than all other medicines together. It surely must be the best remedy for a cough. POST OFFICE, NEwBERRY, S.
