The Piedmont and Arlington Life Insurance
of Virginia, continues to prosper despite the
serious financial embarrassments that have
oppressed the people of the Sout'hern States
during the past few years. Our people are
becoming educated to the idea that by life
insurance a head of a family can most cer
tainly provide for the probable necessities of
his family; by the liberal terms of policy in
the Piedmont and Arlington, if one should
fail-after paying premiums for several years
-he would be entitled to a paid up policy
without extra pay, generally equal in amoun t
to the payments made.
In the competition for business many liberal
improvements have been adopted by the
.everal companies canvassing for business,
but not one offers superior advantages to
those guarantee'd under a policy of this
staunch Virginia Corporation. 48-e.o.w.

the turn out was good, considering the rCe

EFFECTS OF EDUCATIO.-One of the vis
bligting effects of "book larning" wvas thia
shown in our town on Friday. Four hat
negroes each sold cotton to Mr. T. F.
Harmon, two of them were either not dei
tinctured with the prevailing epidemic, dor
rascality, or knew nothing about the u
three R's, especially the one relating to m
figures. The other two, however, were
more advanced, and on receiving their va
cotton tickets with the weights, changedva
the first figure of their bales from 4 to
5, and presenting them, received payw
for 500 lbs. instead of 400. As soon as on4
it was discovered, Harmon went for fro
them, and found one, who paid $20 to lac
get out of the scrape, and was "berry inc
tankful for dat." The other put out, qu
but sent up his donation just as the sun
declined, and to the same amount. Both H E
realize now that honesty is the best thi
policy. We advise our cotton buyers we
before paying hereafter to examine Ch
tickets closely. fro

now first offered through agents to annual

the subscription price. An annual subscri- so

ring the year over 832 newspaper pages.
Folded to the size of a large octavo book,
the subscriber would have 3,228 pages, equal
to seven octavo books of ordinary size, say of*
460 pages each, and one-half of these pages to~
would contain fine engravings, and for the

it profitable.
I respectfully inform my friends and the
public generally, that I have in store
A. LARGE AND COMPLETE STOCK OF
WINTER GOODS,
embracing every kind of article kept in a
first class store, and AT PRICES TO SUIT
THE TIMES. Bargains can be had as I
am determined to give satisfaction to my
customers, and sell lower than any other
merchant in the County. I see that the
merchants of the city of Newberry, held a
meeting and resolved to sell standard printq
at 10 cents, and it is said and believed by
people generally, that the merchants of
Newberry city sell cheaper than in any
other city this side of New York, except
the FOUR MILE HOUSE, therefore to
carry this out I must sell standard prints at
9j ets., and other articles in proportion.

Seegers' vs, Cincinnati
-Beer.
The Cincinnati Gazette makes the aston
ishing announcement that Cincinnati beer
is no longer pure, but adulterated with mo
lasses, sugar of starch, fusel oil and the
poisonous colchicum. The Commissioner
of Agriculture, in his report for 1865, says
that Prof. Mapes, of New York, analyzed
the beer from a dozen different breweries,
and found all of it adulterated. Cocculus
Tdicus an.1 r'ux vomica entered largely in
to its compos.dion.
J. C. SEEGERS guarantees his beer to be
pure and reliable. He does not adulterate
it, but brews from the best barley, malt and
hops. Feb. 4, 5-tf.
