TILe ]He a I 1. TOOS. F. GRENEKER, EDITOR. NEWBERRY, S. C. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 10, 1875. A PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE. The Herald is in the highest respect a Fain ily Newspaper, devoted to the material in terests or the people of this County and the Suate. It circulates extensively, and as an Advcrtsin- medium offers unriValled ad. vantages. IFor Terms, see first page. "The Walk, and Other Poems.' We have been favored by the author Mr. John A. Chapman, of Newberry with a copy of the above named book, of which a well merited notiqe was made in a late issue of this paper by Mr. J. F. J. Caldwell, a poet himsel of no mean order. In that eloquent and truthful notice, the exquisite beau ties of these poems were so well and faithfully portrayed that we deem it only necessary to briefly announce that the book is published, and that oui readers have it in their power to pos sess it and enjoy a rare privilege, ani we advise them to secure it at once, as only a limited number have been is sued. To the lover of the beautiful as embodied in poesy, it commends it self, but more particularly to our owr people here in Newberry will it prov interesting, as the scenes and persons alluded to are all familiar and to "the manor born." Besides "The Walk," which occupies 58 pages, there are other poems as the title indicates, viz. Saint Agnes; Death; To my Sistex Rose; A Young Lady dying of Con. samption; To Ida in Bohemia; New. berry, a Sunday afternoon's walk published some time ago in this paper Rosemont Cemeter3;. To the Bride; The Awakening of Endymion; The Music of Nature; A Picture; and at Appendix, making in all a very neat volume of 96pp. We cordially com mend this tribute to Newberry to th< people of this county and our readern generally. It is for sale at the author's bo.kstore. Buying Stolen Ootton. Judge Mackey, at the recent terni of court in Lancaster, in issuing the order which follows, has done a ser vice which entitles him to praise, and we hope it will prove the entering wedge in stopping one of the greatest evils which exists, and one which falls with such force on the farmers. This action meets with our hearty ap proval. Let the example be followed in every county in the State, and a traffic which has worked such tremen dous ruin be stopped. The buying of stolen cotton or produce of any kind at night is thieving of tbe worst character. -Here is the order: L. J. Perry, .Esq., Foreman Grand Jury, Lancaster, S. C. SmR: You 'wili please notify the keepers of country stores in the county of Lancaster, that,.if any person shall buy or receive at his store any cotton at night, whether from the lawfiil owner or otherwise, such person shall be indicted for a nuisance, and, on conviction, shall be sentenced to a terrr of imprisonment in the peniten tiary. Respectfully, T. J. MACKEY, Presiding Judge. Editorial Review. Judge Woods, of the United States Circuit Court, has issued a decree for the sale of the Air-Line Railroad, to satisfy the first mortgage bonds. The Wheeler House, Columbia, is once more open to the travelling pub. lie. Mr. Owen Daly, well known in that city, is the lessee. No lack of accommodation and good fare. The stockholders of the Air-Line Railroad met and the following board was elected : A. S. Buford, President. Directors: Austell, Alexander, Mad dox, Earle,Can non, Claytoin, McAdden, Wilson, Southerton, Dubarry, Roberts, Howard. The earthquake experienced here on Monday night, the 15th inst., was of wide extent, State exchanges generally giving accounts of it. In Washing ton, two shocks were felt, in Au gusta three, and so severe that window panes in several places were shattered. The Fair season is almost over Union held its County Fair last week, and that with those at Anderson, Darlington, Orangeburg. Greenville, Abbeville, Oconee, and other counties, are all represented as being highly successful, and reflecting great credit on the citizens of those sections. Two railroad warehouses were de stroyed by fire at Marion, S. C., on the first instant. Total loss, including ten bales of cotton, over twelve thous and dollars. No insurance. On the same night seventeen heavily loaded freight cars feli through a trestle on Toby's creek. There have been various slanders in circulation in regard to Jas. Gordon Bennett's recent trip abroad. It is st~tcd now that he neither went to marry an Irish princess nor to start paper for all languages, but that h visit was for the purpose of purchasin a stock of bull and poiiter dogs. EH has returned with $45,000 wortl Dog fanciers are cur-rying favor wit him. The 25th of this month has beE set apart by President Grant as a do of thanksgiving and prayer, on whic occasion the people of the Unit( States are recommended to abstai from all secular pursuits and fro their 'accustomed avocations, and assemble it their respective places worship, and, in such forms as mE seem most appropriate in their om hearts, offer to Almighty God the acknowledgements and thanks for t His mercies, and their humble praye for a continuance of his Divine favoi The New York Rerald is puzzl( in trying to account for the gre results which follow the preaching at singing of Moody and Sankey. TI exercises are not different from t] general character, nor are the sermoi as elaborate or able as those preach4 by the great divines of the day, y the results are vastly different. It mense crowds fill the vast edifil in Brooklyn, where the Evangelists a: laboring daily, and hundreds eo tinually approach the altar for prayc The great awakening in that cot munity strikes the Herald as alt gether singular. John L. Humbert, Treasurer Orangeburg County, who was convic ed of official misconduct by the Con of General Sessions last January, at sentenced to one year's imprisonmei in the penitentiary and $1,000 fin has been pardoned by the Governc on the strength of petitions made I citizens of "prominence and weight to use his Excellency's languag among which are-the names of R. ] Elliott, J. J. Wright, H. L. Shrew bury, W. B. Nash, F. L. Cardoza at others. It appears that he was mo sinned against than sinning, and h made such promises of future useft ness that it seems but right to pard< him. The meeting of the State Legis] ture rapidly approaches, and prepar tions are being vigorously made for ti accommodation of the members, bus ness included. The supply of st tionery is already furnished, and it said to be amply sufficient, the cost it including fancy paper, inkstand and sweet-scented mucilage to mal things stick, and at the -same tin smell agreeably, is only fifteen thou and dollars. The Netos and CJourii correspondent has been getting c a little facetm on the subjet of the preparations and thinks th: among other things the bronze fign: of Washington, which stands in tt hall, should have its shins scoured and at the same time be fuirnishe with a new walking stick. Live] times are looked for this session as pea-nut venders anticipate a bris trade. Offiial List of Patents Issued by the United States Patei Office, for the week ending Saturda: Oct. 30th,, 1875.
