An interview with the genial Major

PERSONAL.-We have been favored
during the past week with visits from
the following gentlemen: Drs. Wm.
Williams and Spearman, the one from
the rarified region of Walhalla, and the
other from the important city of Sene
ca, and also one from Mr. Thos. Floyd,
an old native, lately from the mountain
fastness of Brevard, N. C. Our lively
and energetic friend Mrs. Scruggs, for
merly of Helena, and now of Walhalla,
also charmed us with a visit.
Mr. J. F. Rawson, the efficient and
intelligent agent of the popular Music
House of Ludden & Bates, Savannah,
Ga., we are pleased to say, is sojourn
ing in our midst "for a few days," and
in a musical way is making an impres

pertains to his caling, and we commend
him to all in want of musical instru

We are pleased to see our lively Mol

from foreign parts, and looking so well.
'Tis true he was absent but for a brief
period, but we missed him nevertheless.

ARE You DOING IT?-We allude to
the duty of sending your children to
school-a duty which is paramount to
every other consideration. Riches take
to themselves wings and fly away, but
a good education never. We have good
schools, eminent 'teachers, moderate
rates of tuition, leaving no excuse at all
for neglect in this direction. The Male
Academy, we are happy to say,-is under
the direction of one of the best teachers
in the country, Mr. R. H. Clarkson,late
of the Wimnsboro Academy, who comes
with the highest recommendations; of
Capt. Pifer, the Principal of the young
ladies Academy, we deem any praise
unnecessary, his rare accomplishments
being already well known, and we may
say *the same of Miss Fannie Lea.vell
and her flourishing school, and as well
of the qualifications of Mr. J. F. Har
rington, and Miss Gaillard, who are
each and all engaged in the good work.
These schools should be filled up, and
they can be, for there is material enough
in and around the town to make them
large and remunerative, and it is a pity
to allow this material to run to seed in
idleness and ignorance. Parents, you
know not the injustice you are doing
your children by not using the means
and advantages at your command.
Send yotEr -children to school by all
means, and according to their advance
ment or sex, to one or the other of the
above schools.;

ABOUJT TH TOWN AN CouZy.
The Indian Summer some time since
alluded to was only an imitation-the
veritable season is now on hand, and
it is charming.
Our Mollohon clothier went bird
hunting with his dog a few days ago
and got-a ducking. It was no fault
of the dog.
Impi-ovementr-are going on- all over
the town, and the knowledge that our
citizens are able to bear the expense is
refreshing.
-Mrs. Ludecas,.lately occupying the
store in rear of Baltimore Corner, has
moved her stock to Columbia. The
Millinery basiness she found overdone
here. We regret to lose her.
- Wnuds of Newberry-a wood and
&,a! yard; a steam laundry; a lumber
yard; a manufactory or two; and last
but not least more money.
Books are very stationery, and sta
tionery is quiet,. transactions in this
line quite-limited.
The little folks are beginning to be
dn: the quiiv about the approachin~g
visit of Santa Claus.
A bright three year older the other
day became angry because one of his
feet got asleep, and was overheard to
say,M"me no seepy, its day time."
No end of farmers in this County say
they have cut their eye teeth and will
plant more for themselves next year,
and less for speculators. They are sen
sible.
It is certain that the planting of oats,
wheat, barley and rye is on a more ex
tended scale this fail than ever before.
We have heard some say too that
they will raise more hogs and make
their own meat. Prosperity will follow
such a course.
-3. K. Schumpert still continues the
practice of baling hi- , in a man
ner which attracts atten ' . His bales
are generally the neatest on *the mar
e and -in consequence bring top
prices, every cotton buyer striving for
the honor of shipping them. A 534 lb.
bale goes to the Fair.
Newberry has a dancing school, Mrs.
Teasdale the teacher.
An attempt was made a few nights
ago to enter the store of Mr. U. H.

off.
We congratulate Mr. Thos. Boozer
on securing to himself a charming com
panion for his life journey.
Something new under the sun is ex
hibited for sale by Messrs. Wheeler &
Co., in shape of a leather tipped shoe.
It is the neatest shoe out, and tip top on
the tip order. Wheeler & Co., are pro
gressive, and are always trying to do
something for the public benefit.
A cartridge which had been careless
ly thrown into a fire place in one of our

EkrrQUAKE.-The topic on Tues
day-morning was-the shock experienced
on Monday night between 10 and 11
o'clock. The opinion of all who felt it
is tat itwas an earthquake of decided
character. Every one who was awake
at the time aver that it was distinctly
felt, one saying that it seemed like a
strong wind, sudden and short, shaking
the bouse sensibly;; another that the
vibration was so great that a-lamp or
a table was nearly overturned; another
that it was like the passage of adog
-across the floor; another thought some
one was breaking in from under the
house ; another felt his bed rock as if it
had been in the hands of a Titan, and
our experience is a sadden waking fromr
a violent shaking of a door. Scores
of others felt and heard the shock, and
a sound as of distant thunder. There
are others, however, who were asleep,
who dispute- the evidence. Whatever
it may have been, it was startling tc
thos ~who felt it. The question is, had
Bald Mountain anything to do with it;

Maj. J. P. Kinard sold a Dutch mule

The dust on Saturday was highly dis
agreeable, in consequence of.a .ery,

their high horses' fearing damage to
their dress goods.
On Sunday the wind was also brisk,
but the day was so charming that there
was no bad temper displayed.

The Best Protection. I
The best safeguards against epidemic dis
ease are thorough digestion and firm nerves.
It is because they assure the regular perform
ance of the digestive process, and invigorate t
the nervous system, that Hostetter's StomachJ
Bitters are such a sovereign protectivesagainstI
theinfluences which beget intermittent mal-'
adies, and those which directly affect the
stomach and bowels. If the nerves are health
fully tranquil, the-assimulation of food per
fect, as they are sure to be under the infinence
of this standard tonic and nervine, malariaj
may be defied; and if, in the absence of the
most reliable of medical safeguards, the sys
tem has fallen a prey to disease of an inter
mittent or remittent type, the Bitters will, if
persisted in, eradicate every vestige of the
malady. Biliousness, constipation and- dys
pepsia yield with equal certainty to the ope- '
ration of this potent vegetable alterative.
