THE NEW POSTAL LAw.-After the 1st-o
January. 1875, editors have to prepay all thi
papers from their office. Of cour:e no pub
lisher can afford to pay postage for a subscri
ber in arrears. We give this timely notio
to all delinquents that we will not let thei
names encumber our books after that period
DECIsIONS OF THE COURTS.-Any persoi
who takes a paper regularly from the Pos1
Office-whether directed to his name or ano
ther, or whether he subscribed or not-is re
sponsible for the pay. If a person orders hi,
paper discontinued he must pay all arrear
ages, or the publisher may continue to send
it until payment is made, and collect th(
whole amount, whether it is taken from tht
office or not. The Courts have decided thai
refusing to take newspapers and periodicals
from the Post Office, or removing and leav
mg them uncalied for, is prima facie evidence

The Editor is at Glenn's for his health
and recreation; he well deserves the
latter, and much do his friends wish him
the restoration of the former, if his dis
ease should turn out to be more than a
confirmed case of the Hippo-Potamus.
In his absence that biggest "Devil' has
again free range. He intends to' walk
very cautiously; but if anybody's foot
should be hurt he thinks he is big enough
to be responsible-having just raised
the shade of a moustache. In case of a
case, however, you may take the pistols
and he will take the coffee, (milk but
no sugar in his'n.).
We are much obliged for the infor

THE COURT.-4udge Moses worked
very assiduously to dispose of Calendar
No. 1, until last Saturday, when the
KJury was discharged. The trial of
cases on Calendar No. 2, was com
menced on last Monday, and we will
soon hear no more of old Equity cases.
Great credit is due to such persevering
labor when the thermometer is up to
one hundred. We are not avised when
Court will adjourn.
DON'T FORGT.-If you are going
away for the Summer or even for a
briefer period, step up to the HERALD
office and hava the paper sent to you
forthat time. It will not cost much
and will afford great satisfaction while
-you are away. We will send it for one
or two months or longer.
Some time last week the Hook and
Ladder Company extinguished an im
aginary fire in the steeple of the Sece
der Church. The practice was very
good. Persevere, boys, until you be
come perfect, regardless of the jokes of
bystanders who could not be found at
- the approach of real danger. In time
of peace prepare for' war. The fire
fiend sends no formal declaration of
hostilities; he comes like a thief in the
night.

A large,. ferocious dog finding his
way into a dry goods store filled with
lady customers, created considerable
alarm, when a raw-looking case re
marked that if they'd give him what he
wanted, likely the dog would leave.
What could a dog want in a dry goods
store? Why, he wanted muslin', of
eourse.-Geemille News.
He wanted a linen collar and a pair
of gallowses. Muslin' is much too,.good
for him, if Greenville cars are like our
Newberry curse.

fuses to be allayed by the desultory wa

The breeze is like a bjast from a hotel
a kitchen. The river is as placid and as

are too weak to flap, and every roof be
comes a pavement of fire. No one has
s any political opinions. We would all
1 consent to be inflationists if that would
f only create a breeze. Thinking has
ceased to be thought of. No one has

The community is limp. Who wants a

mud hole a few miles below Prosperity,

years, and is extremely dangerous-and
being on the public road, daily risks are

ton States Congress adjourned to-day a
one o'clock, after a harmonious and in
teresting session of three days. Th

to-day was the hearing of an address
by appointment of the last Congress
from Col. J. L. Bridgers, of North Carc
lipa, op the subject of agriculture in th
Southern States. He said that a chang
of agriculture in the South was neces
sary. The population and prosperit;
were diminishing in quantity and qual
ity, and the loss on production fror
1860 to 1870 had been enormous, whil
thle loss in the area of cultivated Ian<
was over seven million acres. He op
posed the cutting up of land into smal
farms as tending to reduce all farmmn,
to the forty acre and a mule system~
The inert minerals in the earth wer
sulcient to produce good crops by at
