We must not forget that human na
ture is the samie within the Order
ais elsewhere, arid that while we
are crushing combinations that are
swindtling and oppressing us, there
m:ay be danger that designing men,
who have found their vway within
Lhe gates, will try to subvert the
organiztion to'the furtherance of
their own p)ersonal ends, by creai
tIing- oflices and inauguratingmove
ments calculated to give themselves
position1 and emolument at the ex
pense of the fraternity. We hope
there are not mainy such false friends
among us, but if there be any, they
should be watched.
Another danger to which we are
exposed, comes fr o nm presence
among us of well meaning and abk.
but somewhat visionary and un
practical members, who will earn
estly urge upe- the Order the un
dertak ing of various enterprises not
properly within its scope, and
whos~e prosecution would lead to
vexatious complications and ul
timiate ruin. There are many
* things too, for which, though per
fectly legitimate as Grange work,
the time has5 not arrived. WXe
must not attempt too) much, but
* "make haste slo'wly." Wve have
a great deal to do, at present, in
the way of perfecting our organi
ization and dliscipline. Without
training which will enable us to act
in efficient concert, our numbers
will only become an element of
weakness. With them, our power
:anid permanence are assured.
We lo riot speak as an alarmist,
for we have full faith in the tri
umph of our principles, and believe
that the dangers we have hinted
at, and others which may lie in
our way need but to be seen to be
avoided or overcome. Our words
are but the fendlv warning of
one who has the good of the Order

KILLING WEEVILS IN PEAS AND
BEANs.-Every farmer who has cul
tivated peas, and attempted to keep
some through winter for s e e d
knows what are called -Pea bugs,"
which, by the way, is not a bug, but a
small gray beetle known to entomolo
gists as Bruchuspisi, LINN, or in some
late lists as 3IyIabris pisi. When
gathering the peas in fall, the presence
3 of an insect in the pea is not noticed,
although it is there, nevertheless, but
in the larvo, or grub state, which un
dergoes its transformation during the
winter, and comes forth a beetle at the
t approach of warm weather in spring.
There are very few localities where
peas are not attacked by this pest;
and although it does little harm to the
- crop if gathered green for market,
when kept for seec its depredations
8 become quite apparent.
Another species (Bruchus obsole
I tus, SAY) attacks beans in the same
manner, but instead of one beetle in
- each seed, as is generally the case
s with the pea, there are several; some
times twenty or more, will be found
in one. bean. This insect attacks all
the varieties, but is not quite as abun
dant in the Northera as in the Middle
and Southern States. But they are
becoming more numerous every year,
and unless soon checked it will be
difficult to obtain sound beans for
seed.
Now, it must be evident that, if
- these insects are ever to become less
in numbers, efficient and presistent ef
forts must be resorted to by all who
cultivate peas and beans. Perhaps
the most certain method of destroy
ing is to thoroughly dry the seed soon
after gathering, and then put away in
air-tight vessels, putting in a quantity
of gum camphor, say a half pound to
a barrel-some old clothes soaked in
spirits of turpentine, placed in the bot.

FOUNDER-Founder is an in
flamation of the parts between the
Icrust, or wall, and the coffin bone,
including the laminoe, whence the
name by which it is now distin
guished (lamintis). The common
cause of founder is drinking cold
water when exhausted or much
fatigued by long, continued exer
tion ; btexcessive exrinalone
will, and often does, produce acute
founder, and is at all times the pre
disposing cause of this disease.
The treatment should be by first
removing the shoes. Next giva
mild dose of physic. The feet
should be kept constantly wet by
tying a piece of felt or flannel
around each pastern, and allowing
it to fall over the hoof, where it is
to be constantly wetted with a mix
ture comnposed of water, two parts ;
alcohol, one part. Or let the feet be
kept moist by poultices, two parts
.bran. with one part oil meal. Long j
rest in a roomy loose box, the floor
covered with tan or sawdust, is
necessary to Rerfect recovery.

Make very sweet, strain and cool.
Make a paste, and when the cran
;berries are cold spread it on the
paste about an inch thick. Roll it,
tie it close ini a cloth; boil two
hours, and serve with a sweeti
sauce.

a half 'eups of flour, raisins, cinnamon,

SMALL SEED 'CAKEs.-One cup of
butter, two of white sugar, three eggs,
half a cup of seeds, half of milk and
prepared flour enough to make a stiff
paste. Roll it very thin, with sugar
instead of flour, on the board and cuti
ini round shapes. Bake it about fifteen I
minutes.
POTATO SoCP.-Nine boiled pota
toes. one quart of milk, nearly one cup_
oif butter, one medium-sized onion,
salt, pepper. Boil, mash and strain
the potatoes through a sieve. Add
milk, onion cut fine, salt, pepper and
butter. Put ail in a saucepan and let
it come to a boil.

Beer.
The Cincinnati Gazette makes the aston
ishing announcement that Cincinnati bee;
is no longer pure, but adulterated with mo
lasses, sugar of starch, fusel oil and the
poisonous colchicum. The Commissione;
of Agriculture, in his report for 1865, sayl
that Prof. Mapes, of New York, analyze<
the beer from a dozen different breweries
and found all of it adulterated. Cocculuc
Tndicus anl nux vomica entered largely in
to its composition.
