The Indian Girl is one year older than when she last spake to the people through the HERALDn, and it is a pleas ure to say that she has gained in expe rienCe, and is better able to cater to the tstes of the great smoking public than -.e befor. She is an anthority onn GuANAANxI GUAx.-Attention is specially called to the advertisement of Mr. J. N. Robson, of Charleston, which appears in this paper for the first time, and which brings to the notice of plan ters the above named guiano, a natural animal deposit. Mr. Robson is now in receipL of a cargo of 500 tons and as it is sold for the low price of 810 per ton, it will be well to send orders for it at once. Read the testimonials in its favor. GEN. M. C. BUTLEies RESIDENcE BuRNE,D.-The Augusta Cmstitutiona ist of Thursday last says that Gen. But ler. while in the city, received a letter conveying the information that his resi dence, twenty miles dist:int from Edge field C, H., S. C., was burned about 10 o'clock the night previous, and that his wife and children escaped with difli culty in their night clothing. We have heard no particulars as to the origin of the fire. Cheap music and reliable authority on all that pertains thereto can be had in the Southern Musical Journal, pub lished by Ludden & Bates, of Savannah, Ga., publishers and wholesale and retail dealers in sheet music. These gentle men besides keep. a large and splendid stock of all kinds of musical instruments of the best makers. We recommend the Musical Journal to amateurs, the price of which per year is only $1.25 and every number containing new music worth the year's subscription. Subscribe for it. THE COiUMBA HOTEL.-This popular hotel still maintains its old and enviable reputation, mine host Gorman leaving no stone unturned in his endeavors to please the travelling-public. The tables of the Columbia are supplied in the very best style, everything available being furnished for the delectation of the palate, and this is not all, foi- the sleeping arrangements are also carefully attended to that no possible discomfort may be felt by the lodger. We were pleased on a late visit to behold the genial Gadsden in his accustomed place, to whom and Mr. Gorman we feel in debted for many marked courtesies. TO THE PEOPLE OF NEWBERiRY, and the ladies especially, the card of the "Leader of Low Prices" will prove highly interesting. C. F. Jackson is the maadfor the times, without a ques tion, for instead of getting into a drag he sets his pegs and pushes straight ahead with such energy and foresight that he invariablty wins. His announbe ment now of a reduction in price of ar ticles previously sold at .the Low Price figure will make a sensation, as it should. If the reader cannot conven iently go down to the city, an ordir can be sent, which will receive prompt attention if addressed to him at No. 12$ Main street, Columbia, S. C. Iw Bunsegs.-lIj things continue as at present, we will be.forced to add another branch to our business. So great is theaceumulation of cravats that we are at aloss what to dowith them, and if others would follow the practice of C. F. Jacksoi, of Columbia, in pre senting us one of his best every time we visit the city, it would be a whole sale instead of a retail business. We sometimes wonder if lie imagines we live on cravats. Whatever his thoughts, however,,.it is passing strange that it is always cravats. Perhaps he has the hope of choking us off. It matters not, though, our cry is "Lay on Macduff, and - be he who first cries hold, enough," and we shall open a first class cravat house as soon as fair weather sets in. If he has no objection, a pair of suspenders by way of variety will make us happy. _____ The Crockery and House-Furnishing Establishment of Messrs. Kingsland & Heath; of Columbia, still continues to i be the great attraction, although the Holidays are over. The fact of the business is they keep a large and varied stock of goods and the public are I aware of it. Place, Main Street, under Columbia Hotel. 2-tf. FRESH SEED.-Dr. E. E. Jackson, of Columbia, the great seedist, as well as weather prophet, has sent us a select and large variety of Buist's garden seed, with request to sow that their qualities may be ascertained. For the seed we are under many obligations to our friend E. E., but as Newberry is now a sheet of mud it would be vain to plant at this time. We have 'seed' seed put into wet ground before without profit, prophets of the weather to the contrary notwithstanding, therefore, we will wait a convenient season. Seriously, Buist's seed are acknowledged to be A I, and are always sent out by the great vege table grower fresh, and Dr. J. is one of the best agents he has, for being a skilled plantist and grower himself he knows what kinds to recommend. Having just received a large stock he is prepared to fill cash orders promptly, and to the satisfaction of all who favor him. Send orders at once. CouE'.-The business at this term of Court is pretty heavy, but it is being energetically worked up, notwithstand ing the unfavorable weather. The cases so far disposed of are: The State vs. Willis Sanders-bur glary-not guilty. The State vs. Hampton Mitchell-as sault and battery-guilty. The State vs. G. P. Jacobi-official misconduct-not guilty. The State vs. J. B. Reagin-murder1 -not guilty. The State vs. Henry Counts-murder4 -not guilty. Five cases have been nol pros., two being for riot, one for official miscon duct, one as accessory to arson, andl one for attempt to kill by poison. The presentment of the Grand Jury we regret not being able to present to Now receving at the Newberry nFu ALD Book Store, a large variety of arti cles in Stationery. All -kinds of letter, note, legal cap, sermon and other papers kept on hand. Wedding and invitation paper and en velopes to match, a specialty. A beAutiful lot of business cards just received. . Superior ink by the single bottle or gross. Quarts, pints, half pints, 4 oz. and 2 oz. bottles. Bill head, letter head, note head and monthly statement paper, always on hand, and printed to order. 3-2t TUESDAY.-It is unaccountable why Tuesday has become the most popular day in the week. We have thought the matter over and over, and can only conclude that it has become so because the HERALD is put to press on that day, and of all the days in the week it is our busiest, and, therefore, in a pure spirit of perversity everything unusual hap pens on that day, and if there is any thing to be done which could be done at any other time, Tuesday is the day selected in preference to, all others. But one time in our experience has a circus ever visited Newberry on any other day-and the consequence always as been that our naturally demoral ized devils get entirely beyond control. The Bell Ringers come on Tuesday. Every advertiser in town brings in his card on that day. If a man wants to hunt up a notice published eight or ten years ago, he waits until Tuesday. If a drayman is due ten cents for deliver ing a package he is sure to come in at that time. If a fellow don't want any ;hing particular he is sure to call on ruesday. The Sons of Temperance neet on that night, but our conduct has )een so intemperate through the day it vould be a sin were we to attend. If L robbery, or murder, or distinguished leath occurs, it happens just after we ro to press on Tuesday, and the news s stale ere another publication day. If n invitation is extended to us to eat tuy.body's big dinner or see a couple narried, the time is Tuesday. But why mumerate further. Of all days in the veek Tuesday is the most trying. yet so tcestomed are we to the pressure, that f, as it sometimes happens, nothing oc :urs, wd'hunt something up. It is re narkable that Christmas does not of ener occur on Tuesday, and Thanks yiving never. All persons in any wise indebted to me, wre called upon to set ile before the 1st of February. Longer indulgence will not Ee given. S. F. FAN.T. Jan. 13, 2-8t. LBOU'T THE TOWN AND COUNTY. The weather since last issue has been rariously good, bad and indifferent. Fust now it halts between two opinions, nd as the clerk is not able to cast a rote it is impossible to say how it will urn out. This is an unfavorable time to put eed in the ground-if you have more n hand than needed, however, you can ommence gardening. Business since Christmas has been mcommonly dull. No one comes in rom the country unless forced to do so. Because we had an Invitation to a arkey and chicken salad dinner, with -it cake and other nice things added ne of our non-paying patrons begged s to treat him. We could not see it. A drover who could not sell out on 'oot, slaughtered here last Tuesday, and pare ribs, back bones, &e,, were plen ;ul. Persons going into churches should nter quietly'after closing doors softly. L noisy entrance makes people turn heir heads. A Chicago shirt dealer advertises, 'Buy from me or I'll bust." Likewise vi we if those who owe do not pay It is remarked that girls who dress 'loud" soon come to talk and act loud. A friend could not go to Columbia on 'riday last, because his linen was all A pair of muddy boots were found in he cellar of a store in town on Monday ast, and as the door was also found pen the inference is that burglars wore it work. Loss, if any, not known. Do not laugh boisterously loud unless you cannot possibly help it. It is vul ar, in spite of the advice to laugh and ~row fat. The order of the day now is home mting. This is the principal business ith the colored people. We hope they nay all get good places. Every man indebted to this office is ~ordially invited to come and settle. We trust the advice wvill be taken to rindly. It is foolish in the extreme to et mad about it. Cash subscribers only are wanted for he year 1875.- If you have no money, ring chickens, eggs, wood, fodder, ~orn, &c., but do not ask for time. We ~annot give it. Job work from this date must be paid r before delivery. The Book Store is also run on the ;trictly cash principle-no charges made. Troubles are like dogs, the smaller hey are the more they annoy you. The scarcity of locals last week was used by the crowing of a game chick m in the rear of our office. It was im yossible to write under the circum itances. A double-fisted Dutchman breaking 1p flour barrels for kindling wood, sent >ur wits wool-gathering about the same Im~ Tn the extremity a lodge in some The Newberry Hotel is again in the hands of Mr. J. P. Pool, who will run it to the satisfaction of everybody. Major Reese, military pay master, was in town last week. The hearts oJ the soldiers were made light and their pockets heavy by his visit. HE (not Major Reese, but the other man,) was in town again a few days ago and never said a word about hi back due subscription. We know not what to make of such a man. A ladv visitor to our Book Store, who is a close reader of the HERALD, won dered lately how we could write so cheerfully while the weather was so bad. The only reason we can assign for it is that some kind-hearted crea tnres are always coming in to pay their dues. This is what keeps up our spirits. Otherwise we would collapse. Court is in full blast. Some of the jurymen think it a blasted shame that they are obliged to sit when they would rather stand up or walk about. We think it a good way to cure a man of laziness. A short man became attached to a tall woman, and somebody said that he had fallen in love with her. "Do you call it falling in love?" said the suitor; "it's more like climbing up to it." He blushed a fiery red, Her heart went pit-a-p.at; She gently hung her head And looked down at the mat. He trembled in his speech; He rose from where he sat, And shouted with a screech, "You're sitting on my hat!" A SORRY DEFENCE.-The Presi dent's message is just about such a document as might have been expected. It combines in happy proportions Landaulet Williams' law and Grant's temper and *atiocination. There is nothing in it to touch the heart or wind of the people. It is eminently and only adapted ',o the meridiap of those who hate the South, in the de gree that they have injured her, or the flunkies who would like to wear plush livery at the court of Ulysses the lst.-Phwnix. Beliable Teptiipony. It cannot bereasonably supposed that when a person testifies to the efticacy of a remedy whose benefits he has experienced, without solicitation, that he does so for the purposeof misleading the public, or from any other mo tive than that of gratitude. It is still more 4nreasonable to suppose that eminent physi cians would corroborate tho evidepCe thus given unless they werl persuaded of Its truth, rhe proprietors of Hstetter's Stomach Bit ters are constantly in the receipt of voluntaiy testimonials acknowledging the curative and preventive potency of this beneficent tonic and correccive, emanating not only from those who have felt its influence, but also from well known members of the medical profession, both bere and abroad, who haye witness.4 its effects, and prescribed it In tbeir private practice. In the face of such evidence as this, to which the widest publicity has repeatedly been given, it would be absurd to question he medicin al virtues of the Bitters. Skepti ism upon this point was long ago disarmed, nd they are to-day as much respected and far -more widely known than many of the >$cinal remedies which fjijre conspicuously n the pharmacopeia. They are universally ecognized to be the supreme remedy fcr in ermittent and remittent fevers, dyspepsia, iver complaints, general debility, disorders f the bowels and neryogsn9ss, as well as a eans of fortifying the system against mala ious influences, and those which operate in uriously upon the sensitive organs. Whether sed as a remedy for actual disease, as a eans of building up the broken down hysique, or of hastening convalescence, they are never resorted to in vain, and they often estore complete bealtb when prescribed emedies cannot even Initiate its recovery.
