SPRUCE Ui.-If you get a moment
to spare, spruce up; put the gate on
its hinges; put a little paint on the
picket fence you built last year; trim
up the door yard; make it cozy and
inviting. Do not say you can find no
tlne to attend to these things. The
fact is, you have no right to be slovenly.
It can do you no good, but on the con
trary, it will mar your peace, wound
self-respect and impair your c:-edit.
Then, by all means, spruce up a little
at odd times, and at even times too, for
that matter. It will make you feel
vastly better, and maybe, a trifle proud
of your pretty homestead.-Exchange.

HAD A GooD TnmE.-Our resident
D. D. G. W. C. T , of G. T's., institu

the Greenville road last week, and after
the regular business of the evening was
over, the members of the young order,
with the D. D., at their head, invited in
a number of timid ones wvho were afraid
to join, and all together they had a gay
time. It is said the frolic continued
nearly all night, until "Aunt Phebe" and
other plays were worn out. The D. D.
made quite an impression, and being
taken for a widower was invited to pro
long his visit. We have not heard of
any broken hearts, but strongly suspect
damage was done.

There arc plenty of men, clever fel
lows who would make good husbands,
but who are deterred from taking that
important step because they think it
will cost more to keep a wife than to
fight out the battle on the single line.
Many good girls are thus cheated of the
opportunity to show what they can do.
Our advice has always been, never to
think of double expense, it is a myth,
when both parties appreciate the situa
tion. Let the young man hunt him up
r an industrious girl, who is not ashamed
.of work, and who can wear the same
bonnet two seasons, and is kind to fa
i ther, mother, sisters and brothers, and
when found, if her consent can be gain
ed, go ahead. Such a woman was in
the mind's eye of the author of the para
graph below, which we copy for the
benefit of our bachelor friends:
,"The managing woman is a pearl
-among women; she is one of the prizes
in the great lottery of life, and the mari

spring-time grass begins to grow. and
we solemnly appeal to Grand Master

to excuse the act by saying that th<
goat would not rear up at both ends
when required, nor. could it butt the

slipping down the greasy pole, but tha
does not alter case. Again it is affirm

INSTALL.ATION.-Newberrv Division,
Sons of Temperance, had a gala timE
of it on Tuesday night last, the occasior
being Installation night. Quite a num

in the ante-rooms and there waited un

the interesting ceremony of Installatior

with the cracking of jokes and nuts, eat

nice things, a very enjoyable time wai

pleasure in doing so. After indulging
for awhile in the above enjoyable and
