FDITOR.-The cotton buyers have a rule in the weight of cotton bales that does not work both ways, and is, therefore, not a just one. To illustrate: I carry a bale of cotton t o market; I offer it for sale; a merchant examines the sample and buys it at 13ecents; I have it weighed; it ireighs 390 lbs; he takes off the one fsu.rth of a cent because it did not weigh 400 lbs. Now, sir, I contend .th% I sold him thne cotton and not the peupds in the bale. Suppose the bale veighed 410 lbs, would he have given me 131 ents for the cotton ? No, sir, not if it had weighed 500 lbs. The reason gven, or rather subterfuge-for there is neither reatson nor justice in the rule-is that he pays as much freight on a 390 lb. bale as he does on a 410 lb. bale. But does he not gain 10 lbs. over his standard bale of 400 bales. If it had weighetl 500 lbs. he gains 100 lbs. The rule, therefore, does not work both ways, and is unfair and unjust. I hope the next meeting of the Council of Patrons of Husbandry will investigate this subject. A PATRON. MOBILE, ALA., December 23.-A faital duel took place in Mississippi, rtear Green Bay, at 12 noon to-day. The principals were A. H. Tardy and B.]>. Lay, both of this city. Seconds, for Tardy, C.ol. J. M. Williams; for Jhay,, Capt. P. M- Murphy. -Mr. Tardy was killed at first fire, being shot through the heart. His body was brought in to-night on the New Orleans train. There is much feeling over it. The origin is said to be an article in an Insurance journal, written by Tardy, and4 construed by Lay into a rettetion upon the Grangers' Life Insurance Company here, of which he .is actuary. Lay struck Tardy in the -face on Tuesday, on the street, and Tardy challenged him. The challenge was accepted and the duel fought with the :fove named result. Su-ch an array of pictorial charms is not dlften gi-eg in one number. even by The Al dine, The literary contents embrace a rare collee tio'n, and wantof space only prevents an en nnmeratic6a of the variety presented, and which make'an issue of equal excellence and varie ty, rare even for The Aldine, and evidences the fact that under the new editorial manage menit, while nothing is to be lost in high ar tistic reputation, the literary merit of the publication is to be kept quite abreast with it. The Aldine Company has determined to es tablish an Art Union, similar to the well known Art Union in England, and distributes if,s works of art, both sculpture and paint ings, phich are constantly collecting, among its subscriber Art premiums, valued at $2,500, will be 'istributed among each series of 5,000 subscribers.
