All single or transient business notices in
the local department are inserted at the rate
of fifteen cents per line-liberal contracts
made for three, six or twelve months. tf.
Communications on subjects of interest to
the public are always acceptable. The names
of writers, remember, must always accompa
ny a letter to insure its publication. No re
sponsibility is assumed for any other views
than our own.
DEcIsIOis OF THE COURTs.-Any person
who takes a paper regularly from the Post
Office-whether directed to his name or ano
ther, or whether he subscribed or not-is re
sponsible for the pay. If a person orders his
paper discontinued be must pay all arrear
ages, or the publisher may continue to send
it until payment is made, and collect the
whole amount, whether it is taken from the
office or not. The Courts have decided that
refusing to take newspapers and periodicals
from the Post Office, or removing and leav
ing them uncalled for, is primafacie evidence
of intentional fraud. 44-tf.
ThE NEW POSTAL LA.-After the 1st of
January. 1875, editors have to prepay all the
papers from their office. Of course no pub
lisher can afford to pay postagefor a subscri
ber in arrears. We give this timely notice
to all delinquents that we will not let their
names enenumber our books after that period.
42-tf.
( TAKE NOTcE.-All parties having Ad

by coming prepared to pay for the same

Lawyers handing in such notices will be
held responsible for the payment
9-tI.
They will also be held responsible for the
publication of all notices in Bankrupt cases.
Transient advertisements of any kind must
be paid for in advance, if the parties adver
tising do not reside in town.
Job work and subscriptions strictly cash.
All papers shall be stopped hereafter as
soon as the term of subscription expires, un
less satisfactory arrangements are made to
continue the same.
The X mark denotes expiration-after that
the paper is discontinued.

happens to visit Colmbia during the

send an order to Columbla for anything
in the Dry Goods or Fancy line let him
or her not forget their old friend. C. F.

GREEK PnZE.-In another column
will be found a card from Professor
Win. H. Whitsitt, of Greenville. who
proposes to give a prize of $25 to the
student who shall stand the best exami
nation in Greek, and one of $10 to the
socond best. The examination to take
place on the 10th of December, 18~5.
We take pleasure in calling attention
to it and at the same time urging its
importance. The ambitious student in
Greek will apply himself assiduously
and strive to attain the distinction of
the first grade.
DISTRESSING CASUALTY.-On Thurs
day last, while descending the stairs
leading from the new Masonic Hall,
Mr. W. C. Johnson, an old and res
pected citizen of this place, lost his
footing, and was precipitated to the
bottom, when striking against a post his
left thigh was broken. At his age this
is a most deplorable accident, as it is
well known that broken bones do not
knit as well or as quickly with persons
advanced in years as in younger per
sons. Our sympathies are extended to
him, with the earnest hope that he may
not be long confined.
DoN-'T FonET us.-Hundreds of peo
ple with pockets full of money will visit
town the next ten days. Somc of them
are indebted to us and others ought to
be. We know that they will be much
engrossed with their purchases, yet we
ask both subscribers and adlvertisers
who owe us andl those who are not sub
scribers to pay us a short visit. Let the
printers have some tangible evidence
that it is Christmas. A few back dues
paid, renewals made, or new subscribers
receivedl, will cause them to feel that it
ia merry Christmas and a happy New
Year.

Tnix EXPERIENCE.-The closing
days of last week were the most trying
of all the days in the year, and such
another experience it was confidently
hoped would not fall to our lot again.
But we were disappointed. On the
first occasion we got hold of a piece of
beef which was so tough that the con
clusion arrived at was, that tile animal
from which it was taken was one of the
p)air' (and it was hoped the last one)
which preceded old Father Noah into
the Ark. It defied all efforts to cook it
doie or tender; the longer the trial thec
harder it b)ecamle, and tihe more it twist*
ed and shrank away from the bones.
Thea the attempt to eat it-ugh: Three
days cooking and as many eilortb to eat,
and still it remained the same hard,
impact, stubborn stuff. At length ii
was given over in despair, and the con
soling thioughit indlulged, that the ani
mol was out of the way and that it wm

on soups and other light food a few days
to recover strength of jawv, we were let
to seek more beef, And we got it
rare looking, b)road steak, it looked al
Iright, but alas, too late it was found t
be a part of the other cow of ti e Delugi
period-there were two of them yoi

experience was gone over. In spite c
the little Sunday School song, whiei

CHRIS-%As Is ComNG!-In fact, is
almost cone, and how glad the little
folks are. How full of anticipation
for the good Santa Claus, the old tine
friend of children, will be around
knocking at the doors. or rather sliding
down the chimneys, loaded with every
imaginnable kind of present. How much
are they to be envied. The amount of
happiness in store for them is inealcula
I ble, and theic isn't an old fogy in the
land who would not like to be a child
again, just for one night. Enjoy it,
children, be happy while you may, but
remember in your happiness-you who
are so fortunate-that there are many
little children who will not be so highly
fvored as you, because they have no
fathers or, mother~s to speak to Santa~
Claus and tell him what their little ones
most need, or like the best. Don't he
selish, and as far as possible share with
the less fortunate ones. We recolleet
hearing one little fellow, years and years
ago, say, with a tear in his eve, "Christ
mas is all over now." IHe had eaten
the last morsel of his Christmas pie,
and it was quite soon in the morning,
too. Poor little fellow, it was all he
had. Hunt up such little chaps and
share with them, children, and tell pa
and ma to ask Santa Claus to give the
poor little children something.
