vile, on the occasion of the South Caro
lina Conference of the M. E. Church,
South, which convenes in Greenville,

sold Mr. Harmon the water-packed cot
ton Last week, and who were overhaul
ed by him at Jalapa, and who gladly
and readily made restitution rather
th:n stand prosecution, are now circu
lating the report that they were made
the victims of highway robbery by a
eouple of men from Newberry, mean
ing, of; eourse, Mr. Harmon and his
clerk, Mr. B. F. Griffin. It is a great
pity that they. were not arrested and
brought to tow,n, on the night in ques
tion, and -iade to suffer for their guilt,
and we hope that some effort will be
yet made to bring them to justice. In.
future, let such men have the benefit of
the law, it is a mistaken kindness to
turn them loose on the community
where they can repeat their unlawful
games.

DOES IT BY WHOLES.-Our friend,
L. R. Marshall, if he is minus an Iin
portant member-the right arm-never
does things by halves, as we have ex
perienced the past week. He has been
feasting us largely on the best of oysters,
and though we are waxing fat and
saucy on the strength of his favors, yet
we are not ungrateful, and take this
occasion to say that he is a most clever
fellow, and that his oysters are deli
cious. By the way, speaking of that
lost member, minds us of an interest
ing circumstance. A few days ago he
had occasion to take the cover from a
firkin of choice butter. In vainthe es
sayed with a hatchet and his left hand,
for a mallet was lacking and a hand to
hold it. To our surprise and pleasure,
in a jiffy he hitched himself round and
made a mallet of one of his knees and
soon forced the cover off We never
saw the like before. He can solve other
difficult problems.

ALMOST A FALu=.--Sevend gente
men and boys, together witM one or
two colored individuals - *ho ealed
themselves men, were endeavoring a
few evenings since to lift with one'hand
an, anvil by the horn. Vainly did they
strain and rub their hands in the sand,
the anvil would not budge, until Major
Stewart, who stood for some time an
amused spectator, took hold of the horn
of the .dilemnma with a grip of steel
and lifted it an inch and a half. The
feat was unexpected and dlicited a shout
of approval. He took the palm as hav
ing the strongest grip on the ground.
It was -pitiable to see the further.efforts
of the other str'ong men, some of wiiom
almost wept at their failure. Several
gentlemen said they could do it, but did
not care to do so just then. They were
right not to nightit.
ROBBERY.-On Friday ngthestore
of our townsman, Mr.P. Scott,was forci
bly entered froili the yard side, by par
ties unknown, and robbed of a consid
erable amount of clothing, such as over
oats, pants, vests, shirts, and suspend
ers. besides a large quantity of summer
goods kopt in trpaks. Mr. Scotj; esti
mates the loss at from 6500 to8X);-and
which falls very-heavily upon him at
this time. On Saturday afternoon an
overcoat and pants were fou' jtider a
culvert bridge, two blocks below the
store, land it is hoped that a clue bas
been discovered by which the thieves
may be detected. No developments
have yet been made, however. We
sympathize deeply with Mr. Scott in
his loss.
We have been requested to state that
Mr. Scott will dispose of the remainder

LAURBENS RAIL R0AD.-We had the
pleasure of an interview with Col. H.
T. Peake on Monday, and by whom we
were assured that the Laurens Rail
Road will now be built without perad
venture. Col. Peake has the contract
for the line, and has already gone on a
trip of inspection, so as to b)e thorough
ly posted as to the condition of the bed
before he commences the work. He is
an old railroader, having served in all
capacities, and is therefore competent
to undertake and complete an under
taking of this kind. The people of
Laurens will be rejoiced at this news,
as will also the country generally round
about, and we may look forward to the
time when the Laurens whistle will
again be heard reverberating among
the hills of Newberry. Col. Peake is
accompanied by his son, who will take
part in the work, and we hope that they
wvill make this place their headquarters
as long as possible.
A HANDSOME~ SAFE.-Capt. John F.
Speck has sjust received one of the
handsomest and completest fire proof
safes of its character ever seen in N~ew
berry. It is of Herring's celebrated
make, and was manufactured expressly
to Capt. Speck's order. It is a model
in beauty of finish, is six feet three

The number of people in town on
Monday was awfully large considering
the weather.
Farmers who work themselves, and
don't depend on hired labor are the
people who make money.
C. G. Jaeger, Esq., was made glad
on Monday by having a brace of part
ridges laid on his table.
Holiday presents. and good things to
eat in large quantities, at L. R. Mar
shall's.
The universal exrression is, "I have
never seen such a charming fall. We
have been highly blessed.
McD. Metts arrived here from Char
leston on Friday. He will remove his
family to the city by the sea.
The robbers have come to town.
Keep a watch on your premises. One
robbery already-see notice elsewhere.
In the. Columbia Post Office there is
an unclaimed letter for Dr. Andrew
Wallace, of Newberry.
When you see a young couple late
at night -on the portico chewing and
biting each other, just let 'em alone.
They are only fooling.
That was a clever party who went
hunting last week. It is said they run
up with a 1lock of turkeys near town,
and bagged two.

As a white garment appears worse
when a little soiled than does a colored
one, so does a small fault in- a good
man attract more attention than a great
offence in a bad man.
It is gratifying to say that the ne*
quarters of the HERALD are decidedly
more convenient than the old, and that
the public highly appreciate the,; situa
tion. Everybody likes it.
And they will like itstill more when
our new stock of books, stationery and
fancy articles for little and big folks are
ready for inspection. This important
development will occur in afew days.

Deputy Sheriff Sligh esptured a whis

owner and driver. He succeeded in
getting 20 gallons whiskey to town, to.

of Mr. Henry Whitmire's. Whiskey
and horses will be sold.
