Wilson, which occurred on Wednesday evening lass, after a long and very painful ill ne-. The deceased was a successful nirchant, and in all his dealings and int,:-rcourse with his fellow men evinced an uprightness and integrity which gained him universal respect and adini rat:on. He died in the full hope of a ble4sed immortality, and has left a fain ily who though deeply sorrowing their loss yet feel. that death has been a gain to him. His remains were escorted to the G. & C. R. R., train on Thursday, on which the body was taken to Alston, an(i from whence it w'as conveyed to the iamily burying ground near by. Our sympathies are extended to the be reaed fanily. We are pained to learn that Dr. Al bert Cannon. in this County, lost his yor:ngest child by diptheria on Sunday, the 18th. We learn, also. of the death of Anna L, a daughter of Mr. Adam Cromer, formerly of this County, which occurred atWijjnston, on the 21st inst. Kinard, has again proven himself a man for the people by going abroad for the goods which can not be done without, and it is pleasant to' say that he has returned all right, with enough for each and enough for all, and better still will sell at low g>rices. FOOmHAnRD.-A down freight train was forcibly detained at Prosperity on Wednesday morning last, by a fool 3mrdy individual named Glymph, from the neighborhood of Cokesbury. Ithap pears that he was following up Robin son 's Circus, and had been seen in this town on the day preceding selling blank envelopes at fifty cents each to credu lor negroes. When the company left that night he got on the train, but was put off at or near Prosperity, and was niot allowed to get on again. On Wed nesday morning he tried to get passage on +he -eig-ht t-ain, ndo1 bmeing- re OLD P'APEns.-Old papers for sale at this ofice in packages of 50 or 100. at 40 and 75 cents. tf. JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE.-A negro man was killed on Tuesday night last by Mr. Jas. teagin. about one and a half miles above Helena. The circum stances, we learn, are is follows: Mr. Reagin had returned home late from the circus :d proceeded at once to bed, but shortly after was aroused by the furious barking of his yard dogs. Jump ing from bed he went out immediately, and on discovering the lot gate open and his hogs out he went towards his stable, when a negro jumped up. He claimed to have been to see a neighbor and was returning, but could give no excuse for being found in the yard. Mr. R. suspect ing him of an attempt at hog steAl ing and to satisfy himself as to the truth of the boy's story, ordered him to go in front and proceed to the house of the person named that he might know if he had been there. The negro consented, but made an attempt to close on Rea gin who said he would shoot if he came nearer. Shortly after the negro gath ered a pine pole and advanced on Mr. Reagin, who immediately fired, the wound proving mortal. Mr. Reagin gave himsfIf up, and has been bailed. The jury of inquest rendered a verdict of justifiable killing. This unfortunate accident is greatly to be deplored and bv none more than the principal, who is a quiet, inoffensive younjg man of ood character. We learn further that the deceased had engaged to- furnish a hog to a citizen in this place on the next day. Madame Demorest's Reliable Pat terns of all sorts can be obtained at Mrs. D. THE SoUTH CAROLINA SYNoD which convened in this place on Wednesday night last, and which terminated its sessions on Saturday afternoon,(a synop sis of the mintes of which is published elsewhere), was highly appreciated and enjoyed by our citizens,and the members f that body, we are convinced, will 3arry home with them pleasurable emo Lions of an intercourse both religious and social,and which was fraught with so much happiness. Such meetings are of incalculable benefit to a community, and ewberry will long remember the meeting of Synod. and her association with so many distinguished Christian rentlemen. We would not object to a meeting soon of some other religious ody, for after the experience of the late District Conference of the dethodist -denomination, and almost irectly after, this meeting of the Pres yteian Synod, we feel satisfied that the hearts of our citizens beat with a more enlarged liberality, and that bro herly love is not simply a name. On Sanday the different pulpits in the town ere acceptably filled, and the large ongregations attending were each and all highly edified by the eloquent and fervid preaching of those appointed for the occasion. The weather for some days has been delightful-of the Indian summer char aeter. Shopping is again the fashionable employment. The Presbyterian Synod convened on Wednesday night last in Aveleigh Church, and the attendance was large. The Rev. J. 0. Lindsay preached the opening sermon. Gen. McGowan is said to be the man for the Third Congressional District. Remember that he will address the voters of Newberry on next Thursday, the 29th. ,A practice muzh in vogue is smoking in front of church edifices. We have seen young men stand in the very doors with lighted segars. It is highly unbe coming, and a gross disrespect. Standing outside and indulging in loud and general conversation is ano ther bad habit extensively indulged in. We wonder if it is generally known that though business is brisk the times are still hard. Several persons stopped taking their couty paper last year who 3wed twelve months' subscription. They still owe At a political&gathering at Chappell's on Wednesday last a negro had his Ithroat cut. It~was a colored squabble altogether. It does one good to see the quantity of cotton coming into market. It would do a great many much more good if the article commanded a better price. Retrospecting the past and looking squarely at the present we are confident that farmers next year will not be so keen to plant cotton. It is satisfactory to know that small grain is being plaEted hwrgely. Several of our f.irmers have beautfful patches of oats, barley and rve already looking this paper. Nothing else will answer. The best of pronises will not do it. Six and three Months' subscriptions taken. If the people of the County want their paper they must pay for it. Goobers or pind:ars do not now en gross the tiue and attention of idle people, since chesnuts have come into market. Capt. Spec's new awning and frame are verN ijeat and attractive features, but tl(! eltgance of the inside :rrange ments, together with his splendid stock, are the admiration of everybody. John's persuasive eloquence has no other effect on us than to fix our deter mination. We will do it if the stars fall. John Robinson's procession was the best thing of the kind ever witnessed by admiring Newberry. His elephant and cannibals were bigger. while the pony display was larger and finer than all other shows. Several persons went in who said they would not be caught inside for any consideration. We did not go in. Dr. I. P. Clark declines a nomina tion for the Legislature. Ambition's longings have no influence over him. Wanted, a family of Chinese with a decided appetite for rats to clear the premises of a citizen who is sorely af tlicted with the pests. The crippled soldier, who has pitched his tent at Salinas', says that his pickled mullets are the best things out. He is willing, however, to show several other choice articles of fcod. Mrs. Boyle, widow of the late John Boyle, has opened a private boarding ouse. and as her charges are extreme ly moderate, we trust she will have a full house. It is said that a colored woman while running after Robinson's elephant on Tuesday last, had her arm broken. It is wonderful that other bones were not broken, so great was the rush. As persons continue to ask Mr. Blu ford Griffin if lie was not killed on Tues da last, we take occasion to say that if spbh was the case, it was done while he was absent. He has no recollection of anything of the kind. He is at the store of Mr. Harmon and will be happy not only to answer all questions, but sell his friends any character of goods need xd, from a killed ham of meat to a kill ing suit of clothes. Is there anything strange in this, No, not in a general way, but here are circumstatees in this case whieh rmake it remarkable. We allude o the love of the IEdian Girl of Col mbia, the protg of Messrs. Perry & Slawson, who in spite of untoward cira tances and besettments on every hand, remains as true as the needle to the pole. Her whole heart is given to Perry & Slawson, and her single desire is to build up their fame, and to accom plish this she has devoted her life to the se of segars and tobacco, and to make men happy through smoke.
