'FAiR OF THE CAROU.NAS.-We ac knowledge the receipt of a catalogue of the first exhibition of the new fair of the Carolinas, to be held in the city of Charlotte, N. C., commencing Tuesday, November 3, 1874, and continuing five days. We are indebted to Post Master Scott for the following: There has been is sued from the Post Office in our town, during the quarter ending September 30th, five hundred and ninety Mon,y Orders, amounting to $7,064.16; Fees, $45.50; and one hundred and seven Money Orders paid-amounting to $3, 049,29. We are pleased to notice the return of Mrs. Mower, after an absence North, and that she is in good health and as full of business activity as ever. When his new stock is open ed, we advise the public to look out husbands and fathers, keep your wives and daughters away from the fascina tions of Speck. - SUDDEN DEATHS.-We learn that Mr. B. M. Buzhardt, of this' County, died very suddenly on Sunday, and it is supposed from congestive chill. He was in town on Saturday, in apparent good health, sold some cotton and at tendedto business as usual. Asead and sudden death truly. M., on Wednesday evening last, we -- are .told was a charming affair, and passed off pleasantly to the delight of rall who participated. Such a result might have been expected under -the maagemnent of a band of Red Men - noted for so many good qualities. Mi lam's band did the music, which was of ~the inspiring kind. The party did not br eak up till toward morning. MUEDERa AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. The,*Columbia papers of last week an noneed the horrible fact that J. B. flarrington, a native of Newberry, and -who removed to France after the late wvar, where he married, had murdered 3iis wife and then attempted his own life. It is said his wife was an accom piished and beautiful woman, that they had three interesting children, and their life was unhappy. Harrington claims that he killed her in self-defence. The Revs. Martin, Lindsay and Jacobs, took part in the interesting and solemn ceremony. On Sabbath, the Sacrament was administered, the Methodist con gregation joining in by invitation. In the evening, at the Methodist Church, an impressive sermon was de livered by the Rev, J. 0. Lindsay, from the text, "Remember Lot's wife." The Revs. Fair and Martin assisted in the servlee. J. K. Mendenhall, of Columbia, died after a long illness, at the residence of her nephew, Mr. Wi. J. Lake, in Newberty, on Wed nesdav last, in the 65th year of her age. She leaves one other child living-Mrs. B. R. Scott, of Tennessee. It is with pain we record the death of Mrs. Rob't Holman, which sad event occurred on Friday evening last. She had been sick for about five weeks, and her sufferings were great, but with christian fortitude and resignation she endured them without murmuring. Mrs. Holuan was in her 46th year, was the daughter of Gen. H. H. Kinard, and was a consistent member of the Baptist Church. GIVE HIM THE CREDIT.-If a man does a good thing he should receive the well done heartily, and we feel it our duty now to praise Mr. Robt. Campbell of Jalapa, for the part performed by him in placing the road from the above mentioned place down to Epting's in catpital order. We have -not had the felicity of. riding over the road lately, bat have been told that all of those old trap holes and quagmires have been filled up and laid in logs. Well done, Bob, you are a trump for accomplish ing so great a good under circumstances so adverse, for it is said that while over seeing the work the maledictions heap ed upon his devoted head by the color ed hands were enough to overwhelm a less determined man. Now gentlemen overseers, here is a worthy example for you to follow. Fill up the holes in your beat and let us know, that we may give you the praise which you will then be entitled to. Otherwise may you be the first to sink, wagons, teams and all, into those very holes. THE COMING OF TiE GREAT SHOW. -Old John Robinson's Great World's Exposition. one of the most reliable organizations in America, will visit here on Tuesday, October 20. The show is undoubtedly among the best known to the amusement public. From the Pittsburg Dispatch, we clip the following: "This vast combination has taken the citizens of Pittsburg and Allegheny by storm. Vast and appreciative au diences crowd the pavillions at each entertainment. The exercises in the arena are among the best witnessed in Pittsburg. Stickney and Wilson, and the great menage act of Miss Emma Lake, are witnessed with admiration, and are worthy the enthusiastic and flattering reception accorded them. In fact the entire circus is decidedly good, and is patronized in accordance with its merits. The menagerie is composed of the very many .specimens of rare animals, and the gigantic amusement enterprise is well managed and con ducted. The company remain but two days longer, giving four of their really pleasing entertainments. John Robin son is keeping good his promise made the public of giving them one of the best exhibitions possible, and it is no wonder that his show is liberally pa tronized." Newberry, Oct. 20th. PERSORI..-A pleasant visit was made us last week by Col. Walker, of the firm of Walker, Evans & Cogswell. Col. W. has been making quite an ex tended tour in enlarging his business acquaintances, and has been quite s~Ic cessful in receiving orders. We were gratified with a visit from the Senior partner of the celebrated In dian Girl Segar house, Mr. Perry. This gentleman has visited all the upper Counties of the State, and has made himself personally known where before he was known principally through the smoke of his segars. Mr. Calnan, one of the proprietors of the Columbia Hotel, and late from Glenn's Spring, paid Newberry a visit last week. We judge that his brief stay here among the many friends whose acquaintance was made during the summer at the Spring, was very pleasant. The Cornet Band gave him a serenade on Thursday night at Post Master Scott's residence, where he taber nacled, in acknowledgment of .which compliment he responded in a few ap propriate remarks. Another burst from the band, and another call, brought out Mr. Scott with a short speech. After which a rush was made up stairs where segars and liquids were set out. We understand that some of the party form ed themselves into a mutual admiration society, and sat up until two o'clock in the n.orning. MoRiE LIGHT.-We are almost dis posed to be in good humor with ours selves and the rest of mankind, and to praise the progress of the times gene rally, at home and abroad, since our worthy Intendant and good city fathers have been kind enough to give the peo ple of our end of town "more light on the subject", in the erection of a new lamip at the Post Office corner. This lamp was much needed to pedestrians, to our merchants and the general pub lic, having to drop letters in the Post Office after dark, as well as to those clerks,. and merchants living on the South and South-cast portion of our city, returning home at night after the cose of business hours, and to that por tion of our fellow-citizens in whose path. way to attend evening~ service at the Methodist,Baptist anud Lutheran Church es, this new lamp is erected. In our own name, and in behalf of our neigh bors and citizens resident in our end of the burgh, we tend"r our thanks to our Town Council for the consideration of contributing so much to our convenience and comfort just now on the opening of the business season. Success attend your efforts gentlemen. In all your of ficial acts looking towards improving, adorning and advancing the best inter ests of our growing town, you have our best wishes. We would not overlook either the several other lamps lately set up in different parts of the town. We cannot have too much light. |TRiUE TO HER FmRST LOVE.-Don'1 which make it remarkable. We allude to the love of the Indian Girl of Col umbia. the protege of Messrs. Perry & Slawson, who in spite of untoward cirP stances and besettments on every hand, remains as true as the needle to the pole. Her whole heart is given to Perry & Slawson, and her single desire is to build up their fame, and to accom plish this she has devoted her life to the sale of segars and tobacco, and to make men happy throngh smoke. Was ever love like this? She is now offering new and choice brands, among which. are some excellent ones at the low price of five cents. The Indian Girl glories in her mission and invites the gentle men to call. ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. Weather glorious--the most delight ful season of the year. The Independent movement is mov ing. The great show of old John Robinson will soon be here. Children are advised to curb their im patience. Corn shucking will be the order of: the day the coming nights. Possum and tater are already in or der-very nice to the stomach of those who like the combination. Cotton is rolling in rapidly aid busi ness is freshening up. As a pr6of of reviving business two individuals we. have not laid eyes on for twelv6 months hitvc already paid up their subscriptions. It is with pain that we record the pre valence of diptheria in Prosperity. Sev erel bad cases still exist. Capt. J. F. Speck is once more in his glory, the improvements on his store completed he is able to resume business. All personts who design using coal this winter and have notlaid in a supply :re advised to give an order to 1r. W. T. Wright at his stove emporium. He can furnish parties also with grates or stoves. John snys why he isn't married is be cause that~when he wcoed she wouldn't. A newspaper is the only instrument which can drop the same thought into a thousand ininds at the same moment. Make a note of it, ye merchants. If you want to find out a man's real disposition, take him when he is wet and hungry. If he is amiable then, dry him and fill him up, and you have an angel. If the Council have jurisdiction over the roads within one mile of the Court House, the filling up of the hole just be yond the Cemetery, will entitle the body to high favor. Mr. Pool's sorrel horse and Mr. Fowles' black mare, on Wednesday, ran 400 yards. Time, 25 seconds, purse of $50-taken by sorrel. Have you tried those elegant, large, fat, headless mackerel on sale by Mr. Salinas? If you like mackerel go there and ask the crippled soldier to put you up some. Thos. Cook, under the Hotel, is in supply of very many articles which peo-. pe cannot do without. If you don't see what you want enquire for it. One of the many features to be seen at Salinas' Store is the attractive letter ing on barrels and boxes. This is a great help to short memories. A man will sometimes come ten miles for an article and then forget it. In Salinas' tore this is impossible. everything is marked. The erippled soldier was the artist. FOR THE HERALD. NEwBERRY, S. C., 5th Oct., 1874. Pursuant to a call heretofore published, a mass meeting of the citizens of thisa County was held at 11 o'clock a. mn., in Temperance Hall. On motion, Capt. J. N. Lipscomb was called to the Chair and 0. L. Schumpert. re quested to act as Secretary, The Chair then briefly stated the object of the meeting, and in order to carry into effect said object, Y. J. Pope. Esq., thereupon moved th..t a commit tee of one from each township be appoir,fed to nominate three delegates and three alter nates from this body to 'neet the State Con venion which assembles in Colombia on the 8h inst. Under this resolution the following gentlemen were elected: Messrs. Jau. N. Lipscomb, Joseph Caldwell and William Ray. principals, and Messrs. L. B. Maffett, John S. Hair and E. S. Keitt, alternates. Y. J. Pope, Esq., offered the following, which was adopted: Resolved, That Sampson Pope, James N. Lipcomb, George John stone, Thomas C. Brown, P. FE. Wise and R. C. Carlisle be ap pointed delegates from this Conty in the Congressional Convention which will assem ble at Newberry C. H., on the 8th day of Oc tober, instant. The following resolution was introduced by Jas. M. Baxter, Esq., and was unanimous-. ly adopted: Eesolved, That a Committee of one from each Township in this County, be raised for the purpose of conferring with the Commis sioers of Election for this County, and as. certaining from them the location of the boxes at the election in November next, with a view to having a Supervisor of Elec tion appointed by the United States Circuit Court, for each box in this County ; and that said Commnittee be further charged with the duy of caing to thme attention of saidl Com missioners the importance of opening one box at least in each) Township ini said Coun ty. for the convenience of the voters. Giles, colored, charged witb stealing a horse in this County, broke jail in Spartanburg, where he had been confined waiting removal to Newberry. The escape was made on the 22d uilt.
