Orn BOAT)s.-It is a fact patent to all
who travel on our public roads that they
needworking. Truesome work has been
(tone, and much good work, but much
remains still to be done. Those who
-had occasion to try any of the roads
I which con.erge from Newberry last
t iwinter have a lively recollection of
their fearful condition in certain spots,
and have as lively apprehensions of
them during the coining winter. A
stitch in time saves nine, and it is hoped
that the commissioners of roads will ex
ercise a proper authority and see that
the bad places are repaired. A very
little work will do it. now, which later
will require ten times as much. About
mi(w%vay between the Court House and
the Steam-.iill the plospect is already
l(y)kIng b:d, worse than bad; one or
two more r:ins, and a fmv more wagons
f 'lroi the town of Laurens, and there
will be no passing at all. Farther on
i anothur b::d place. A few poles and
a little brulsh and (irt will make them
all right.. Will this appeal be in vain?
We trust not.
PuITc SrEAKIN.-On Friday night
last, Congressman at large Cain ad
dressed those of the people of Newberry
who were (wt on the oeasion on the
political situation, as compared between
the movement of the Independent Re
publicans and the Chamberlain party.
We did not hear him, but have been
told that his remarks were to the point
and full of sound logic. He was fol
lowed by W. H. Thomas, on the r-form
side, and by 1). R. Phifer, County Treas
urer, in his usual felicitous style in favor
of Chamberlain.
On Saturday afternoon last the Rev.
Cain again addressed the people and
we are pleased to say that this time we
heard his argument in favor of honesty,
and his appeals to his brother republi
cans to follow in the line of progress as
marked out by the Independent move
ment. His speech was highly conser
vative and free from anything offensive
to his white hearers, or anything calcu
- lated to excite the passions of the colored
people.I e showed clearly the neessi
ty of change and reform in government,
and the objections to Chamberlain, how
lie received the nomination, etc., but
with the exception of making sonme
thiek lips open at some little point , of
humor, he elicited but little enthusiasm.
Ephraim is joined to his idols.
RosEMoxTr CEMETEY.-It is unne
cessary to call the attention of the Trus
tees of Rosemont Cemetery to the
shattered condition of the fence along
the main road, for they are aware of it
already, and unfortunately are mfable
to-apply the remedy, simply for the rea
son that they have no means. Why is
who were allowed to take up ground
have failed to comply with their pro
mises to pay for the same. This is a
matter greatly to be deplored. Our
Cemetery, which has been much beau
tiied daring the last year, at an expense
too, we know, to individual Trustees,
should not be neglected. We look upon
a debt of this kind as a sacred one
which should be paid at any an1l every
sacrifice. Only a few days ago a num
ber of cows and calves were in full
possession of the grounds, walking over
and through the various divisions
which mark the resting place of our
loved dead, and tram'pling over the
graves while eating the shrubbery
planted by tender hands. The sight
was a sad one. It is said that we can
become used to anything, but we trust
that this will be an exception, and that
those who are indebted will immediately
- pay their dues to the Treasurer, that
a the fencing may be repaired, and stock
kept out. We suggest, too, that when
i the work is commenced, that the fene
a be placed farther in to guard against
- being broken by wagons travelling
that road. It is designed, we learn, tc
build a suitable house on the ground foi
a keeper, and also to erect a place oj
shelter for visitors in case of rain. Botl:
of these are much needed and will be
of great benefit, and we hope will soon
be accomplished. Nothing can be done
however, until parties indebted pay up

Thie Cant of iipostors.
It is so obvious that physical and constitu
tional vigor is the best defense against dis
ease, that even the vendors of dra-tic purga
tives advertise them as tonics, stomachics
and invigorants, in the hope of enlisting the
confidence of the public in the devitalizing
and pernicious potions. It is amusing to
note how these impostors imitate and copy
the language in which the medicinal proper
ties of Hostetter's Stomach Bit:ers are de
scribed. Although the effect of their rasping
evacuants is to destroy the tone of the diges
tive organs and the bowels, and to rob the
sVstE(M of its vital strength, they are unscru
pilously recommended to the weak and pros
trate victims of disease as stimulants! It is
time this humbug (not a very successful one
it is true, thanks to the mature common
sense of the American people) was stigma
tized as it deserves. Such mi.chievous false
hoods should be exposed pro bono publico.
