CORRECTION.-In our edition, July
1st., we erroneously stated in a notice
of Capt. Patrick's High School at Green

an address at its Commencement. We
correct it now by stating that tis gen
tleman's address was delivered in the
Chapel of Furman University, of whieb
institution he was then declared a grad
nate.

COKESnURt COIEmNCE.--his Con
ference, which elbraces 'Newberry,
Edgefield, Abbeville and a sm:ll por
tion of Laurens, will converie in this
place in the Methodist Church, on
Tbursday morning, at 9 o'clock. A
large number of delegates will be in nt
tendance, and the deliberations of the
body will be of an interesting character.
On Wednesday evening, in the same
Church, the opening sermon will be
delivered by the Rev. R. N. Wells, of
Greenwood. As the Conference will
be held with open doors. the plie gen
erally are cordially invited to attend.
On Sundav afternoon next, there will
be a Sabbath School meeting, on which
occasion addresses will be deli':ered by
members of the Conference. The va
rious Schools ore invited to attend.
It is presumable that with the pres
ence of so large a number of clerical
gentlemen, that the different pulpits of
the town will be served on the coming(
Sabbath by appointments from the Con
ference.
WHAT IS OUR PoPULATION?-This
question is frequently asked, but as we
do not know certainly, and cannot find
any one in the town who does.kiow, it
goes unanswered. One day inast week,
it being imperatively urged, all the
public offices were visited and officials
interviewed, and every knowing indi
vidual asked,- but a majority could not
give any -gures at all, while the rest
figured the number variously from
2,000 to 3,000, consequently we ga;e
up the search in despair. In the good
old council days the chief marshal used
to go around and take the census ocea
sionally, but now it is not done. We
respectfully suggest that Conceil make
it the duty of some one of its offneers to
make the rounds and ascertain the num
ber living in the incorporate limits of
the town. Or if that is not practicable,
that the job be given to some one of the
many active young men in town who
are only unprofitably engaged by Street,
Walker & Co. Let us have a cu
gentlemen, the first in a decade of years.
PERsONAL.-Sinlce our last, Major C.
H. Suber. Judge Leahy and Hion. HI. C.
Corwin, left Newberry for a sojourn at
Glenn's Spring.

Mrs. Z. L. White, accompanied by
one of her children, has gone to States

On Wednesday, the Rev. R. A.
Mickle, formeor pastor of Aveleigh Pres
byterian Church, bid adieu ie ewber
ry, and took the train for his dist:ui
home in Cuthbert, Ga., where he goes
to take the responsible care of a new;
charge. Mr. Mickle war, one of ouj
best preachers, and his depart.ure,thougi
for a long time expectedl, will be re
g-ettd. We are glad to know that the
home he goes to is a pleasant one. He
had seryed Aveleighi Church for a num
ber of years. We wish spiritual and
temporal blessings in abur:dance.
We were pleased to notice in town
dirg the last wveek, Maj. J. B. Ezell,
of Columbia, and Capt. J. L. Southern,
the popular Sheriff of Greenville Coun
ty. Both these gentlemen werehe
