Edmund Ruffin to the L'egislature of South Carolina. several pianters were induced to m4tse of marl in the improve ment of the:r lands, especially on such as cultivated cotton, corn, and oats. The late John A. Ram ;,Nq., was the first of the plan -tars: iViding in Saint Andrew's Parish to try the experiment on his cotton field. The successful -result was published in the Southern Agriculturist of 1844, in the Octo ber nfixier. About the same time your correspondent made similar ,epriments in. marling cotton, corn, and oats, with such remark able success, that he was awarded the Ruffin premium of the. State Agricultural Society. The effect of the marl on the oat crop was greater than on that of the corn- or cotton. He shoult know at out . tock and manures, and the cultivation of trees and small fruits, and many )ther things-in a word, he should know what experienced, observing farmers know, to be sure of suc cess. THE ART OF TRAMSPLANTING. One of th- most important opera tions of the garden, at this season of the year, is the transplanting of growing herbaceous plants, and much of our success depends upon :ts proper perform ince. Thous ands of good, healthy plants are lost every year for want of a litt'e care and skill in transferring them from the seed-bed to their perma nent Ilace in the garden. The best way to transplant both vege table and flower plants, when prac ticable, is to take them up careful ly with a garden trowel, with a ball of earth attached, so as not to disturb the roots, and transfer them to a hole of suitable size, where they are wanted. If this be skill fully done, and a little water im mediately applied, they will scarce ly be checked in their growth. This is best done immediately after a rain, but a thorough watering of the seed..bed will answer the same purpose. Where the plants can not be taken up in this way, the roots should be "grouted" with a batter composed of rich, black earth, or, better still, a mixture of equal par's of fresh cow-dung. vegetable mould, and wood ashes. Late in the afternoJn is the proper time for the operation. It is well to shade the plants for a few days after transplanting. [Rural Carolinian, May No. t.OOK OUT R DROUGHT THIS SUMMER-We may look out for drought every season, and shall seldom look altogether in vain, but the present spring up to this time has, in most parts of .the ecuntry, been marked by frequent rains, and a wet si ring is likely to be fol lowed by a dry summer. "What cafi we do about it ?" do you ask?. Keep the soil well stirred and our crops vigorous by el:-an cultivation. If our~lands were properly prepar ed before planting, we have the means in our ha:.ds of protectin'g our crops against all moderate droughts. The bad farmer suffers every year, either from drought or from too( much moisture, and, geni erally, from both. Such "bad luck" is sure to follow him, from year to year, till lhe shall mend his ways anzd learn a more rational system of farming. Wream for inside, one pint o'f mili, one-half cup of sugar, a lit tie butter and salk. two tablesoonfuls of flour (or corna stareh). Flavor with. lemnzn. (Make two pies). Stir into the milk while boiling till sufficiently thick.
