HINTS ABOUT WORK.
Petroleum is very cheap. We wish
we could induce every reader to get a
barrel and use it freely for presering
implements, machines, etc. In cold
weather it is better to warm it before
using, as wood will absorb much more
of it.
Examine every implement and ma
chine you have; clean it; oil the bolts
and tighteu the nuts, and put it in per
fect order. Then wash it with petro
leuma. (o over it two or three times,
and get on as much as the wood will
absorb.
Get out stone-boat and other planks.
Repair old stone-boats and make new
ones. Saturate them with petroleum.
A farmer should find a stone boat for
. every team useful. For ordinary use
two-inch plank is thick enough; but
for large stones better have them 2j
or 3 inches thick.
Mend bags. mark them, number
them, and put thein in their proper
place. A piece of board say three
feet long and six inehes wide nailed
on to one of the beams in the barn
wakes a convenient support for bags
-aud for many other things, such as
pails, baskets, etc.
A good fi.rmer eaun-t enjoy his eve
nings or slep w n.ight until he
knows that all his animals are comfort
able and eierything is in its proper
place.
An hour's work at night in the
winter seasons will often save two
hours' work in the mornin'g when
everything is frozen up solid or is cov
ere?d with .'Iow.

able ; provide proper ventilation. and
itake the doors and windowrs air
tight.
Hoicrse~s that are working re.tularly
need extra feed in cold weather.
There is nothing~ better than chaffed
hay and corn-meal.
Horses that are driven fast should
have oats instead of corn-meal.
Farm horses that are doing little or
not hing can be well win tered on chaffed
straw with a little corn-meal and bran,
5ay two bushels chaff (16 lbs.), 4 pounds
b,r:n, and 4 pounds corn-meal each per
day.
Cows are healthier in a deep open
shed th-an in a close, ill-ventil'sted sta
ble. But a stable is miuch more eo
lnemical of space. and it can be kept
warmi, clean and well ventilated ; and
when this is the case the cows will re.
qjuire less food, or if they cat as much
food will either give more milk or store
up fat.
L.iberal fe:.ding is usually the most
economical feeding. It is a great
waste of digestive powers to so feed a
cow that she neither gives uilk nor
increases in weight ; it is a still great
er* waste to so feed her that she must
c-ousu:ne mo~re or less of the fat and
tiesh p;reviously stored uip in the sys
temt. This is what happens when an
aInini:d weighs less in spring than in
the. f;dl.

T1hc extent to which water mingles
with bodies apparently the most solid
is very wonderful. The glittering
14p:d1 which beauty wears as an orna
s.n'it is oly flint and water. Of every
twelve hundred runs of earth which
a landlord has in his estate four hun
dIred are water. The snow-capped
stunmits of our highest mountains have
manyV million tuns of water in a solidi
tie-d formn. In every plaster of Par.is
statue which an Italian carries through
our streets for s:le there is o-ne pound
of water to four pounds of chalk. The
air we breathe contains five grains of
water to ceh cubic foot of its bulk.
The potatoes ::nd turnips which are
boiled for our dinner have, in their
raw state, t he one se'ventv-five per cent.
and the other ninety per cnt. of wa
ter. If a man weighing onle hundred
,and( forty po-unds were 51queezed in a
hy draulic press, seventy pounds of w'a
ter would run out, the balance solid
matter. A maan is chemically speaik
ing, forty-five pounds of carbon aind
ot her enlemients, with nitrogen. ditiused
thinoughi five and a half pailfuls of wa
ter. In plants we tind water thus
sigigno less wonderfully. A sun
flower evaporates one and a quarter
pints of water a day. and a c:abbage
ab'.ut thesamuequaatity. A wheat plant
exhales, in 175 days about 100.000
trains of water.
A good summer drink is made by
p.turinig hot wa'ter on cream of tar-,
t:ir. A spriunkling of l em on peel
helps the imagination, and the finish
ed aruecle is nearly as good as cold wa
ter.
HINTS ON HOUSEKEEPING.

ing (or are thiking :hiout it). I wi:h
to say a few words about housekeepig

first place it need, .ysten. and good
managmenlAlt to keep tihe rn:achiinery
in mlotien. and a great deal of patience.
especially if your maid of all work is
a real green girl. who can't understand
English and never lived out be.

Every day cookery for every family
is a very niuch more important matter
than most people imagine, for upon
its being well done depend mainly
the health of its nembers. and a right
action of its digestive powers. Coni
lUerCiug with breakfast and the "staff
of life," there follow in regular order
all thit will be required for the tbree
ineals of the day. To suggest bills of
fare to the intelligent housekeeper
seems useless; yet perhaps, all feel
such a want at times, when they de
sire to present some variety daily to
tempt the palate of those they love.
Such variety is not ouly agreeable but
necessary to the health of a house
hold. .
In the spring, before new vegeta
bles coie, is the most trying time
for novelty, the winter having passed
with its warm bread. biscuits, rolls,
batter cakes and muffins, so grateful
at that season. For dinner light soups,
fresh fish, baked hams, roast beef,
etc. For dessert, pies, puddings and
blanes-manges. For tea, warm rusks,
cold rolls and bread, cream, cheese,
cottage cheese. radishes, cold tongue,
chicken salad, fish salads, preserves
and light eakes, are nice. In the sum
iner for breakfast. use dry and milk
toast. light rolls, ham cut very thin
and broiled or frizzled. early tomatoes
slieed, lanb chops.
In autumn, the season of fullness
and plerty, but few hints are needed,
as f-uits, vegetable! and meats are
crowded upon the attention. For win
ter, ample stores you have provided,
so we will say a few words about
setting the table, and then I will give
you two recipes for each meal, which
I think are nice fur this season of the
year. First of all a nice clean cloth.
I would advise white tablecloths for
dinner, red and white.(or colored) for
breakfast and tea, as they sav-e a great
deal of. washing and irouing. Have
your silv-er, china and glass polished
brightly. as pretty bright dishes add
:~Ito the meal. Do not sit at the end
of the table, but at the side; have
yrour better half sit opposite of course,
and, if vou will, you can wait on the
table. and reach all your side dishes a
great deal better, thani if y'ou sat at
the cnd. Have the meat dishes nrear
the carver and a good sharp knife, as
carving presents no difficulties but
simply requires kn o wl e d g e. For
breakfast, if you use coffe~e, have it
good. I use one teaspoonful of ground
coffee for each person. One teacup
of unground c-offe-e is eniough for six
grouwn persons. Muffins are nice- for
breakfast for a small family. Take
(ne pint (of iik, one egg, two table
spoonfuls ojf yeast, smiall piece of but
ter, enough flour to thicken ; bake in
rines when risen. I mix at night for
breakfast. You can bake in the oven
on a griddle. Be sure to grease the
rings well. Quick waffles: Take one
pint oif milk, beat into it three eggs
andm enough flour to make a stiff bat ter,
add a tablespoonful of mueted butter
and a little salt ; bake themi immnedi
at'iv.
TIo bake a fish you should empty
the fish at the gills ; thena stuff it with
bread and herbs, forced meat balls or
uysters. just us: you prefer. Season
the outside with pepper; tusrn the
tail into the mzouth and tie it. Lay
it on sticks in your bake pan and flour
it well. L:ay sonme pieces of butter on
it ; half an hour will cook a sma!l one.
For cocoanut pudding grate the nut
across the grain, free from the outside
s:in, then stir it into a custard made
'f oneC quart of milk, five eggs and su
war to taste, and a little butter, and
bake on a thin paste.
A CHEAP W~A5H FOR BmiTLiNG;S.
--Take a clean water-tight cask arnd
put into it a half bushel of unslaked
linre. Cover it with boiling hot wa
ter six inches deep, stir briskly, anzd
wait for the lime to sl:ke. To the
lime and water add two pounds of a
cheap salt called sulphate of zinc
(white vitro1) and one pound otf comn
mon salt. These inirredients cause
te whitewatsh to harden, and not
erack and fall off. To form :a beauti
ful cream color. add three pounds of
yelow ochre. A lump ef ivory black
will give a pearl or lead color. L:anp.
black may be used tom produce a dark
col..r if dlesired. Applied to palings,
plank fene.-s, and all out buildingrs,
they last muc-h longer and look better.

six. grate five good-sized potatoes, add
two quarts water, and place over the
fire and boil slowly half an hour before
wated for the table ; ten minutes
before taking up add half a cup of!
sweet cream, a large spoonful of butter,
and salt and pepper to taste. To
those who are fond of onions, a small
one grated with the potatoes add much
to the flavor of the soup.
