SaooriO i THE Tows.-Attentior has been time and again, called to the mischievous practice of shooting in the yards as well as the streets by the boys, Jf the parents of these Young Ameni cans will not prohibit them from continuing the evil, we think-the town authorities should take the matter in hand. On Saturday last a. gentlemen riding out with his family had his horse to-take fright at the discharge of a gun in the hands of a lad. A corner had Ijust been turned as the. discharge was made, and the horse suddenly wheeled, to the imminent dager of the buggy and its occupants. Horses are liable to fright and to do serious damage under such circumstances. Frequent com plaint is made of shot falling intoyards, striking against windows panes, &C., and in one or two instances ballidre known to have struck' with sufficient violence against dwe1lings to bave wounded persons had they been struck instead of houses. A AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.--Efforts are making for the organization of an Agricultural Society in this County. 0. L. Schumpert, Esq., is zealously en gaged in - getting subscribers, and is making ene.uraging progress, having obtained the names of some twenty-five or thirty good men, who- have taken stock. The amount pershare is $2-.00, and.when five thousand dollars worth of stock shall have been taken a meet ing of the stockholders will be called for the purpose of organizing, -of-which due notice will be given through the 4ppers. It is proposed, if.it..be possi ble, to get ready for a Fair next fall or in December. This is a good movement and we think the plan -feasible. The people oaght to seize the opportunity and car 'y it't snebessful fruition. -We once had an Agricultural Society in this County, but like many other. thingsit sucunibed to the force 'of circum stances; but+ now we can start again inder favorable auspices and form a soiety that will be the pride of the County. If other counties in the State have such societies in successful -operation Newberry can have one too, if her will be but added to her ability. Let the scheme be worked up energetically. Look out for the subscription list and when yon see it subscribe liberally. If it fails to reach you soon -call on Mr. Schumpert and,give your namies. Call at John F. THAT "Gooi MAR" Loc.A.-Some months since, a paragraph under the heading "Good Men" appeared in the 1qeal of this.paper, and-we were pleased to know that i.t was appreciated, for sev eral superlatively good men, the very salt of this County, acknowledged the orn by repor ting at the Captain's office and settling, some for two, and three, and even four years back due subscrip tion. They thought the hint given was the very thing,, and so did we. In the course of two or three weeks our ex changes gave evidence that it had struck their flint also,and they gave "good men" conspicuous places among their locals, but somehow they forgot to give pro per credit, and we now see it going the rounds of the North Carolina press mis credited. If it was an ordinary para graph we would care nothing about it, but when we remember the sleepless nights spent in concocting it, the agony and groaning of spirit through fear of the consequences, lest the good men would withhold their patronage by ta king their names off the subscription books, and besides, the hickings which might result, we confess that we don't like such*conduct on the part of the brethren. It required several years of bitter trial before we went for the good men, and even after it was determined it cost much time and labor, to say no thing of compunctions of ednscience. We hope all impecunious, lugubrious editors who desire to go for the: "good men" of their acquaintance on the strength of the above named piece, will give proper credit hereafter. PEG FAcTour.-We are gratified in being able to state that a sample of creditable pegs have been exhibited to us, manufactured in this place by three of our most practical business men. -It is designed by these gentlemen to establish a factory in Newberry for the manufacture of this very useful article, in every size, and adapted to all the va rIous wants to which pegs can be ap plied. This is indeed cheering, and is an evidence that notwithstanding the financial pressure, there is enterprise in our midst, and courage withal to exer cis it. The location selected for the Factory is on Scott's creek near the culvert of thd G. & C. RI. R., and we must say, a better place could not possi bly have been selected We have nol been authorized to name the corpo'ratoru in this popular branch of induitry, bul think it just as well to say that Messrs W. G. M-,W. T. T-and I. N G- are the most prominent amoni them. RrTE.-Some men can do any thing and nobody have a word to say I about them. Not so with all, however. Mr. Jones or Mr. Smith, or any of the John family, can put on new coats or hats,. take a drive in a fine buggy be hind a two-forty horse, kiss a pretty girl, go to an animal show, or even get on a bender, and ride Munson Buford's flying horses, and its all right, its a privilege accorded them, and not a man opens his cheek about it. If Mr. Grun dy is guilty of either of the above, how ever, its common talk directly. - In an unguarded moment we were persu:iled by the proprietor of the Trapeze to take a mount and go round, just for the fun of the thing. We assured him that aside from the loss of dignity which would be sustained, there was great danger of a loss of the last meal we had taken. that it would produce a bad feel ing, that there wasn't a particle of fin. in the thing, wd might fill off, and many other strong arguments. He was deaf to them all, and assured us it was all right, With misgiving we mount ed, but the last-word before the thing started. was to stop it immediately' if we hollered 'nuff. Well, it went off, and one 'round was suflicientto convince us that Mr. B.'s arguments wouldn't hold water, it seemed as if we had taken an everlasting flight, soul and body seemed to part, next our stomach felt like it would follow in another direc tion, another half turn and our breath was almost gone, luckily before it left us we hollered 'nuff, and fortunately for the world, a valuable life was rescued from a high and ignominious death. The pesky machine was stopped. We have tried steamboat rides in storms, have stood on bow and stern, have gone up and come down, and have suf fered many other things, but such ef fects as that ride produced were nevel experienced before. We are satisfied, however, the lesson was invaluable for we will never try it again. But we don't like the notoriety it has given, everybody talks about it, the girls snicker, the boys hoot because the edi tor got on a high horse, and the little niggers grin as we pass. If we go in the direction of the horses, the people on the street want to know if we are going for another ride, &c. But enough, we want everybody to understand that the ride was taken in a Pickwickian way. and for the benefit of others, to warn them against the folly, and that if the court knows itself, and she thinks she do, that it will not be again attempt ed. We utter no disparagement of the Flying Trapeze, but rather think it a splendid thing for boys with good. stom achs. and we advise them to ride as long as they have a dime; ~but we have1 no hankering for it. On Sunday a change for the worsti took place, in consequence of a change which came over the spirit of his dream, and now the aspect is bad enough. It would be a blessing if he'd join the1 Temperance Society. Rev. H. W. Kuhns left here for Sa vannah on Thursday last. The Senior of this paper thinks of go ing to Charleston in a day or two to take a drink--of Artesian water, In anticipation, the "devils" are get, ting ready to assume control. Some lovers sit up half the night with only one chair in the room. Don't ask how it is done, you know how it is your self. A prisoner broke jail last week, but was re-captured before proceeding far. M. M. Buford's flying horses are all the rage, with boys and girls and men of age; they are always running, day and night, and good judhes declare it a pretty sight. Some of our merchants have already ~returned- from the North, and we advise the public to be on the look out for their advertisements, for no doubt they have made good purchases. Wanted-a few more cash subscribers to the HERALD-either singly or in clubs.: Job printing executed in the neatest style, in the most expeditious time and at the lowest cash prices at this Oafiee, Try it. The boys continue to shoot in the in corporate limits of the town, at birds and pigeons and sometimes at nothing. Have the Council no authority to pre vent this? The spotted cow has gene somewhere, perhaps where the woodbine twineth. In its place, however, comes a melan. choly calf making day and. night hid eous with its 'bleatings. Let us have peace! A walk around the Newberry market is sufficient to make a hungry muan commit suicide, On Saturday last the only article offered for sale was cabbage.; The consequence was everybody had the colic on Sunday. Ought not the Town Council to see to this also? Sure l, fathers should love their Ghildjren. Who knows but that the sins of the fathers are being visited upon the chil dren. Truly the people of Newberry de serve better than they get. Have you tried those Greenville saus age which Messrs. Chase & Co. receive two or three times a week? If you have not, go and put your name in for a mess -for they are decidedly nice and good enough for anybody. If you ha'e tFie4 them, it is altogether unnecessary to ad vise on the subject, for you will go agamn. The dollar store has ceased to exist. A MILITARY GOVERNMENT FOR SOUTH CAROLINA. Such an idea has been suggested by some Tax-payers in Colu1mia as the est resort to free the State from high taxation, but how to free yoirself from paying high rates for cigars, that are really very mean, is the subject that involves the special interest of every one who buys either as a dealer or pri vate s'moker.
