WATE IN HOUSEKEEPING.
Xinericans are industrious, money
making people, but they are not econ
omical. Our housekeping is prover
bial ywasteful, allowing leakage at ev
ery*pent, sufficient in the aggregate, in
manyhouseholds, to sUpport a Euro
pean family. Some writer (we know
not to whom to give the credit.) has
mac :ie following extensive, but .by
no means complete enumeration:
Nueh waste is allowed in cooking
meats.. Unless watched, the cook
will throw out water in which meat
has -been boiled, without letting it
cool to take off the fat; or she will
empty the dripping-pan into the swill
pail. The grease is useful in many
ways.
Again, bits of meat are thrown out,
which a French cook would convert
into an excellent hash.
Flour is sifted in a wasteful manner,
or the bread-pan is left with dough
stieking to it.
lPie-crust is left over, and laid by tc
sonr, inste,d of making a few tarts fol
tea.
Vegetables are thrown away whie
would be nice if warmed over foi
breakfast.
Cream is allowed to mould and spoil
mustard to dry in the pot, and vinegai
to corrode the castor.
Good knives are used for cooking it
the kitchen, silver spoons are used t
scrape kettles, and forks tor toastiuf
bread.
Tea, roasted coffee, pepper and spi
ces are allowed to stand open and thu!
-loose their strength. -
Dried fruits not cared for in seaso&
become wormy, and sweet-meats art
opened and forgotten.
Vinegar is dr-awn in a basin, an<
permnitted to stand until both vinega
and basin arc spoiled.
Soap is left in the water to dissolve
or more used than is necessary, an<
the scrub-brush is left in the water.
Barrels and tubs are left in th
sun to dry and fall apart ; tins pu
away without being properly dried ar
rusted.
Molasses stands open and flies tak
posession.
Apples decay for want of lookin;
over.
Pork spoils for want of salt, and bec
because the brine wants scalding.
Ashes are thrown out carelessly
endangering the premises, and bein;
wasted.
Clothes are being whipped to piece
by the wind on the lines; fine can
brieg are rubbed on the wash-board
and iacs are torn in starching.
Table-lineum is thrown carelessi,
down and nibbled by mice; is pu
away damp and mildews; or the fruil
stains are forgotton and the stain~
washed in, or '-set."
beupisare used to wipe didl
es,-and tea-pots are miettled on .th
stave.
Lard is not well dried cut, and be
comes tainted, and rats destroy th~
~oap:grease."
Jones are burned that might b
broken up and thrown into the con
post heap.
Old shoes, woollen rags, and suel
accumulations are permitted to li
round loose instead of being comnpost
ed for your favorite grapevinres.
Sugar is spilled around the barrel
cafee froma the sack, and tea from tb
Wooden boxes are used to take u]
ashes, then the box is pushed asid
and forgotten. Many a family ha
been made houseless and homeless i
a night by such an inadvertence.

FRUIT GARDEN.
This and the next month arc bes:
for trinnruing fruit trees. We cannot
repeat too often that, short trunks ani
low heads are indispenzsable in out
hot climate for protection against th<
sun. Where trees are trimmed u~
high, there is a constant tendency foi
sprouts to spring from the stem neal
the ground-and the bark is almnost
certaini to be killed or- the South West
side of the trunk. We prefer th<
p.yrmidal shape for almost every va
riety of' fruit tree. If young tree:
hzt~c been ne~I~~tvd the past summer
bring them as near to the pyramid as
possible by shortening the braiies,
leaving the lowest ones longest, the
next above some shorter, and so on to
near the top, leaving one strong vigor
ous upright shoot, sone ten inches
higher than any other. for a leader.
Have an eye also to thinning out the
interior branches so as to leave the
head open. Waln
PEACH TREES.
Cut off half the last year's growth PA
of bearing peach trees. to diminish
the fruit buds and increase the vigor
of those left. Indeed all kinds of fruit
will bear this thinning out of fruit
buds-the size of the fruit will more
than make up for the diminished num
ber. Search out and destroy the
borer.
TOP-DRESSING
Give each tree a top-dressing of Win(
ashes scattered as far from the trunk
as the limbs extend-a peck to a half PI
bushel to each tree. An adition of der.
an equal quantity of lime will I. very Ent

WASH FOR TRUNK AND LIMBS.
W. n.
Make a thick wash,of lime two parts,
and of sulphur and soot one each, and
apply it freely to the stem and branch
es-taking care that an extrs supply
is given to the forks of the stem wI
where the large limbs grow out-as it
is at these points that .disease and in- for sI

We advise this wash for every tree in

s SOW OATS.
In our experience, oats sown early
in September are most productive,
but a drought sometimes prevents
their being put in at that time. The
jnext best period for sowing, is about
the 20th of January. Several of our
best farmers in this vicinity inform.
