It is customary ameng iewspsper editors and corresDondents, who know very little of the subject under con sid-eration, to w'te long, aDd-- windy articles to the. farmers ab.ut what they ought. to do to advante their own in terests. For instance, under the head of "True Policy," or "The Demand of the Times," or such like, they ex .hort the planters to cultivate less cot ton, and to raise on their plantatiens ev3rything they need,from' grazs up to corn an1 dotton. Whi1e we are free to acknowledge that we know just as little as the aforesaid writers, and while. also, we think that .the farmers themselves know best what to do with out any interferenee, still we have an opinion on t1is matter. We think it a mistaken policy ft r planters, in order to avoid the em barrssment which sometimes follows -the excessive planting of cotton, to jump to the conclusion, that they must make their crop as varied as their wants. This would be found to be far more Tuinouk than the other plan. We do bldieve, that in every seetion the products ought to be varied, each platter h:avin-g a specialty which he has discoveredhis land to produce in the greatest quantity. But for each man to undertake to raise iiany crops would end in vexation, and disappoint ment. Each farmer as it seems to us. should raise what his lands produce in the greatest abundance, and by ex change or -sale lie will be able to pro cure what he wants eheaper than he could-raise'it on 4unds not suitable for its cultivwth-.l. It is not the raisin.g of cotton ex e.usively that has brkei any one. As the So1th is mainly a cotton prGduciug country, as it will general IV podItree cotton at a better profit than anything else. cotton is the thing to be mainly plaited. A pay-as-you go s;VsteM added t> the production of all the cotton the South is able to make will enrich it faster than any other system that can be adapted. The fault lies not in cotton, but in credit, exotbitant interest, uncertain -.abor, want of eeonomy and negligence, which may aceomlpany the cultivation of any other crop as well as that~ of cottt'n, anid leave the mian who prac ticed them in poverty, however diver sified his erop. 'We need diversified industry, it is true. The South needs maufactures and comm.erce as well as agriculture. But diversified industries do ut mean for every man to have a diversified crop. Each mran should maea specialty of that to which lhe and his means are best adapted. The Call of the Taxpauyer5' Couwention. On the 13th inst., a large number of unemployed men made a riotous demon stration in New York. The police in teferred and the crowd disbanded after drawing and spilling a little blood. It is said "one mat had a Communist flag, but he did not get time to unfurl A most disastrous fire took place in Camden on Saturday night the .10th inst. Among the sufferers were Messrs. Kennedy & Boykin, Capt. W. L. Do Pass, Messrs. Hodgson & Dunlap, Mlr.. R. M. Ktennedy, Mr. J. S. Clond, Mr. F. S. Zemp and Mr. Wm. Wallace. Total amount of loss 50,000, insurance about one-half. The Abbeville Medium says: Twen ty Scotch and German immigrants have been ordered through the agen ey at Charleston by the Due West people. They will be given employ ment in the several families and upon the plantations around that place. They will add something to the wealth of the country. TIe peplc are moring! An immigration society lets been formed in Fairtield and a conmittee ap pointed to prepare an address to the .A number of delegates from ditrerent parts of the Union met at Washington on the 14th, to consider the subject of cheap transportation. On Friday night the 9th, the store of Mr. W. Q. M. LBerly, of Lexington, S. C., was entered by sone person or per scns and robbed of goods to the anount of three or four hundred dollars. The first instalment of immigr.%nts, four in number, arrived-in Winnsboro on Tuesday. They are from Ireland. The Union-E1crald of Colnmbia, says: -There are at the F:ir Grounds some sixty talians, all of whom, except two or three. are men-laboring men. They have come here under the hope of bet tering their condition,. and will proba form an Italian colonf in Spartanburg county. There is a real searcity of la bor in parts of the up country, and room for all those that our people can afford to treat well. Now th;tt they are here, it becomes us to do what we can to m:1ke them comfortable, or t,ey will advise others not to comec, and when our State is b':tter prep)ared to recei ve them, we will not be atl to get them. This party, we understand, was landed in Columbia, from New York, at a cost, of about eleven dollars apiece. If they have no money to buy laind, they ought to have land given them. In fact,1 there are hundredis of our own laboring populationl that needl homesteads inore than wages. The terms uiponi which these men contract are ten dollais per month and board.
