We have been requested to state that on r the evening of Friday, Feb. 6, Mr. J. - Prescott Eldridge, of New York, known f as the "Prince Delineator of the Pas sions," and who has received the high est enconiums from the Piess wherever he has gone, will have the honor of ap pearing before the citizens of Newberry in his inimitable role of Dramatic Imita tions, Character Representations, Char mcter Recitals, with a portrayal of the Passions, etc,. GIVE HEED.-The notice of Dr. S. F. Fant is peremptory-all old accounts must be settled forthwith, or those fail ing will have costs to pay. The doctor is in terrible earnest, and no one can blame him. So also are McFall & Pool, their ulti matum being that no more goods shall go "ut of their store on slip shod men orandum accounts. The sooner our merchants all come to this conclusion the better for them selves, and the community too. The cash system is already working well in this office, considering how short the notice. We take pleasure in recommending the above named book to the careful perusal of our learned critic, for in these times of sudden changes of fortune, he knows not when he may be cast upon an unknown island. Such things some times happen, and it is always advisa ble to be able to make the best of a dsgeale situation. As a rule, how ever, we suggest that he have little to do with works of imagination orfiction, as there isn't the slightest danger of his mental organization being deficient in that respe~t.___ PRtOSPERITY.-It was the ,Junior's pleasant Jot to spend a day and two nights in that wonderfully prosperous town of Prosperity recently. We were surprised to notice the rapidity with which it had been rebuilt after the fire eheso -nearly- devoured the whole town. There are no'y soine frurteen or fifteen store houses already occupied by merchants or soon wiii be, a fact in dicative of the enterprise and go-ahead ativeness of its inhabitants. The plat form of the depot was loaded with cot ton and more still coming in. But what ever may be said of its enterprise more could be said of its hospitality. The first Quarterly Conference of the Methodist Church at this Station, was held on Saturday and Sunday last, and was presided over by the Rev. Henry M1. Mood. The exercises were interest ing and profitable. On Sunday night, at the conclusion of the sermon by the Presiding Elder, from the text, _"Ac knowledge God in all thy ways," an ae cession was made to the membership in the person of a young lady. - At the meeting of the Conference Board on Saturday night, it was unani aously resolved that the buildingof the new church be at once and actively en tered upon; that the building commit tee consisting o(f Messrs. H1. H. Blease, R. S. Chick, W. T. Tarrant, Z. L. White and T. F. Har7mon be retWned and instructed to proceed, and that the Rev. Manning Brown, together wit the Treasurer, Mr. Robt. 11. Wright, ascertain if the subscriptions obtained last fall might be relied upon. We are pleased at this action of the Conference, for if there be one charge more than another which needs a de cent and comfortable house of worship it is this one. The purpose now is to erect a neat and substantial wooden building at a moderate cost. instead of: a costly brick one, and the effort and earnest desire is to have it completed in time for the District Conference, which is to meet here in July next. -We trust that the membership will strain every point to aid in so laudable an uider taking. At the same meeting, T. F. Harmoh -Md T. S. Moorman wete elected dele gates to the District Conference, -ith W. W, Hodges and J. D. Hornsby as alternates. W. T. Tarrant was elected i District Steward. Seventy dolars were taken tip on Sunday morning in aid of the Sabbath School Library, as this amount is not sufficient, contributions will be gladly received by the Pastor. The Circuit Conference takes place at New Chapel, on Saturday and Sunday next. ABOT TuE TowN AND COUN'Y. Lt:. Miller, of the Military Post at Newberry, after a prolonged absence in quest of health, returned last week, we are pleased-to see, looking as fresh as roses in May after a snccession of-April showers. Mr. Drayton . Kibler', an esteemed tizen of this County, lost by death one of his infiant twins a few days ago. [t was but three months old. It is reported that a case of menin. getis has occurred in town, but we be lieve it was nothing more than a con gestive chill. A case of house-breaking occurred at Mrs. McKellar's residence. A number of articles were abstracted, sour, meat, lothing, jewelry, &c, The thieves are said to be two negro women. A veritable case of Ku-Klux is re ported in the County. The hero is a negro. We have not heard the partic ulars, further than that lie disguised himself and beat one of his colored brethren. The Rev. P. F. Cold and damp are inimical to health, and we generally have an unwholesome combina tion of the two at this season. They pene trate the skin and integuments and affect the muscular, glandular and nervous organi ains, producing rheumatismn, neuralgia, hills and fever, and where there is a tenden y to dyspepsia- or liver complaint, provok ing an attack of iu'digestion or biliousness. The best advice that can be given under sneli circumstances is to keep the external mrface of the body warmly clothed, and to keep the internal, organs in vigorous work ing order with iostetter's Stomach Bitters. Gradually but constantly chis famous invigo rant is superseding the adulterated liquors of commerce, as a mediciaal stimulant and corrective, in all parts of the country. It will be a happy day for humanity, and it will surely come, when this pure restorative shall have taken the place of raw spirits as a stimulant in all our public and prnvate hos pitals. It is not, however, merely a harm less s.zbstitute for the fiery stimulants referred to.
