to be the age of festivity; for nearly every
day we hear of Pic-nies, Barbecues, or such,
in some portion of the County. There will
be two during the present week.

The Sons of Temperance and Good Tem
plars have moved into the Hall over Mayes
& Martin's Store, which they havc rented.
The Sons are decidedly in earnest, and are
quietly and soberly doing a good work.
SicKxNsa.-There is very little sickness,
for this time of the year, in the town and
country, so says the' physicians. This
speaks well for the sanitary condition of the
town and general healthfulness of the Coun
ty.
NEw CorroN.-The first boll of new cot
ton,. that we have seen this season, was
placed upon our table last Saturday. This
boll was grown on the Bush River plantation
of Mr. F. Werber, and was gathered, fully
open, on Thursday, the 7th inst.
NEWBEaRY COLLEGE.-Through the ef
ficiency of the Committee, tbe subscription
list has rapidly swelled to $4,000, and tine
prospects for more. This is the way to do
business. gentlemen. We will soon see a
calossal Institution iu our midst.
RlAiN.-We have had some most delight
fal rains during the last few days. They are
not only refreshing to poor mortals, but are
-very fine cotton growing seasons. Newberry
has been itnusually fortunate in obtaining
light cotton showers during the past month.

entireTy agree erith the conclusion arrived at
by this Society on the first question had for
discussion, viz: "Was the execution of Mary
Queen of Scots, justifiable?" The question
was decided in the negative.
Our readers will no doubt be glad to learn
that the health of the Editor is improving
and that he is enjoying himself very much.
. We have no doubt that you will be glad
when he gets back so that you may be rid
of us.
Ouir neighbors -of the Progressive Age
make tliemselves quite merry over our
Editor's letter from North Carolina. That is
right, our chief likes to see people enjoy
themselves and would miake everybody hap
py if he could.
We'had the picasure of seeing our old and
true friend, Dr. Sme!tzer, and his good lady in
Newberry last week. They were both looking
well, and hearty and cheerful. They say,
indeed, they enjoy uninterrupted good health.
May it always be so; and may it be well with
themain life and in death.
THE Caos'.-Iu riding through several
sect ions of the County during last week, we
find that the farmers are very cheerful in re
gard to cotton; but don't think they will
make much corn, But when don't farmers
grumble a little? Why, when we see such
fine plants actually bending over with fruit,
what other than a fine crop can be made.
Quite a curiosity has becn laid upon our
table, the first of the kind we ever saw. It is
a double watermelon, or two watermelons
joined together like the Siamese twins, and
both growing from the same stem.
This freak of nature was presented to us
by Mr. Samuel Hoiley, and was grown on
the Carmicheal place, near Frog Level.
RURAL, Spoavs.-Besides the usual rural
sports, there has lately revived the time
honored amusement of chasing the fo.
These animals are quite plentiful, and the
young men of the country, especially in the
Caldwell settlement, have bred a pack of the
inuest hounds to be found in the country.
As for stock, fleetness, bottom training and
tine nose, they are hard to match. This is
the most innogpat and commendable of all
pastimes.

We acknowledge receipt of invitation to this
Pic-nie, but circumstances entirely beyond
our control prevented our attendance. We
regret our inability to attend, for these pic
nics in the counrtry are the most delightful of
all festive occasions, when care is thrown to
thewinds and we can lazily lie under the
L shade of-the trees, or flirt with the pretty
girls, or listen to the gossip~of old time
' riends, or idly dream and do nothing. Well,
well,our youth is gone like a dream, and our
days of flirtation are almost over. The fact
is the good wife boxed our ears the last time
she caught us flirting, since when we have
been more cautions.

ACCIDENTs, &c.-There has been quite a
chapter of accidents and casualties in the
town of Newberrv within the last seven or
eight days.
Mrs. Dennis' little boy, at Mrs. Mower'",
while drinking water through a hollow reed
from the well bucket, fell from the curbing
of the well, and a splinter of the reed ran
through his tongue and into his throat,
hurting him seriously. He is doing well and
is running about as usual.
On Tuesday last, Mr. W. C. Parker met
with a very serious accident, at the Tannery
of Webb, Jones & Parker, by which he very
nearly lost his life. Two rib$ were broken.
Mr. Sill's little son jumped from a loft, one
day last week, and, lighting on his feet, the
shock injured his hips so much that he may
possibly be a cripple for life.
And on Wednesday afternoon, of last week,
Mr. James MeMakin, Chief o' Police, com
mitted suicide by shooting himself through
the head with a pistol. * Sad and rish act.

A cynical writer says that if a woman
knew how much she lost by forever smiling
in a man's face, she would quit It altogether.
More men are won by a little pretense of
quiet sadness than by the sunniest smiles
that were ever seen.
The following dog story we find in
the Fairfield BleraW. of August 6th.
Darwin may be right after all that
dogs are undeveloped men, as we very
well know that .some men are quite
dogged, and others are only mulish:
SuIerD.-A fine bull dog belong
ing to a gentleman in this county re
cently-committed suicide by hanging.
It was chained to a post. The morn
ing before its de-ath it was discovered
hanging over a fence by the chain and
was rescued. The next morning it
was found dead, having wound the
chaitn under and over a box. Its hind
legs were resting on the ground.
Should this be proven an intentional
suicide it will establish the facts that
even dogs are subject to attacks of
emotional insanity. and will furnish
anther proof of Darwin's theory of
evolution-that animals are contin
ully endeavoring to elevate them
selves.
Snocra av L GHTN ING.-On the afternoon
of Wednesday, the 30th ult., Mr. Wmn. J.
Randolph and his three sons were hoeing
cotton, otn the Spatanburg road, three miles
from this city, when, about 4 o'clock, each
experienced a terrific shock-not unlike
the bursting of an artillery piece in their
faces. The third son was thrown down,
the first son claspiing his head with h
hands. No word was or could he spo
ken for some seconds, each feeling
that, the other had received the fatal
shaft. Fnmes of sulphuric vapor well
nigh stifled the party for a minute or more.
Later observations proved that the light
ning had struck only five steps off. There
being n- other tall object to attract, it took
f~r its mark a stalk of cotton rather hi.:h
er than those around, opening a large hole
at the base. Next day was oMserved an area
of 5 or 20 feet around the spot, wilted and
dyig. Truly a miraculous escape for the
party.-Greenville Republican.

whose original weight (as stated in an inter
view) was 1376 Ibs; but the ague hiaving
