arm, OarbenR S52SN VEAR OF FARM VIPLE MENTS. When will we ever rest from our excessive haste and cadessess, and learn to d. things !i4ew;//. Aa Enlijsh exchane tell: u-4 that thuir wans~ and ni1up-ents last 25 years. while ourS do :ot last over five and t.n. Where is the difirence? Are our Inechanies poor. or are they too hasty, or do fariners fear to pay enough for first-class wrk ? "In America everything in the way of imIpllnIC!ItS and tolS wears out very quickly; and harness, as well as every kind of leather or cloth, tears soon after it is new and very often afterward When I was about 14 years old, I learned to plow with a low-handled wooden plow that' my father had when he commenced farm ing, before I was born. And 15 years afterward this plow was still in exis tence, having had a new beam, and perhaps handles too, in the time; but being a very handy and favorite im plement, it was kept in repair for the youngest pljwboys to go witl. He bought a winowig machine by Cooch, just after lie was in business; and, although he had great quanti ties of grain to winnow (at least 6, 000 or 7,000 bushels per year), and lent it to winnow thousands of bush els for other people, that machine made more than half its cost price after nearly thirty years of wear. Carts and wagons though constant ly used, last a very long time in Eng land, and almost everything on a farm is made to wear well; while in America they are chiefly made for sale, and will be in need of repair in a few days. Half the wagons and dung carts in England are at least a quarter of a century old; and the same may be said of implements; and an eighth of all the tools, etc., in existence had their origin fifty years since. They are not taken better care of than here, nor are they used less-but, on the , n trary a great deal more; for there is as much plowing done on 500 acres of arable land in England as there is on 1,500 acres in America, and as much grain grown on 500 acres as there is on 3.000. So that the wear and tear in England dues not take the effect it does here, because good wood and iron are used, and good work made." HOW TO KEEP TOMATOES FRESH. A correspondent of the Rural Yew Yorker in Pennsylvania writes: 1 have this day, December 9. taken to the store of a friend a basket of ripe tomiatoes, fresh and nice as they were last f:di when pulled from the vine. They were admired by a good many persons.' A lady present asked if they had the same flavor that they had in their season, when on the vine.. I handed her one and tasting it she replied; "Oh ! how delicious and fresh !and such a rare treat. They taste just as they do in summer when fresh from the vine." Now these tomatoes sold out at retail at fif teen cents per pound in a few hours. The next thing after tasting the to nmatoes was. "1Iow did you keep thenm ?" I did it in this way: In the fall, before the frost hurt them, I pulled the. largest tofinatoes and put thenm in my cold green-house: then when there was,.danger of their freez ing, I- removed them into another green-house in which fire is -kept, and laid them with the stem down, on damp sand. Here they ripen slowly, and the moisture from the sand keeps them fresh. In pulling them I leave a stem on them about two inches long, this I put into the sand when I place them on it. I used Trophy tomatoes. The Trophy tomato being a late va riety and very solid I think is the best for keeping. This is the second season of miy trying to keep tomatoes till Christmas and New Year. Those that I sold would have kept till Janu ary 1, 18I3, very well I think. hAVE A SCRAP BooK.-Every Farmer should have a scrap book, in wvhichi to paste agricultural scraps. Every one, in reading a paper, will see a number of things which he will wish to remember. He will perhaps see sugg(estions, the value of which he will desire to test, or hints which he will want to be governed by in future operations. And yet, after reading the, paper he will throw it down and probably never see it again. In such ease . all the valuable articles will be lost. To prevent such a loss, every reader should clip from the papers such articles as he desires to preserve and remember and paste them in a sreap book. Such a book, at the end of a year or two, would be very in teresting and valuable. SALT Fro S-roc.-A correspond ent of the Boston Cuelticator says: Miy practice is to keep salt and wood ashes where horses can have access to them in the stable. I also keep salt in boxes, in my cattle and sheep ..heds during the time they are kept up; and I mamke alt boxes with roofs to them,. to stand in my sheep pastures, with an ujpeInw on one side for the sheep to put in their heads. I mix in a little tar anid sulphur with the salt for sheep. deeming the mixture healthy for them. My conviction is, there fore, that the salt should be put where stock may get it when nature re quires. Hence my practice. One of the most import;nt points in window gardening is watering.1 There should be plenty ot' cracks in the bottom of the pot so as to let the water pass off rapidly, and thus en 'N sure perfect drainage. This is one of the few rules without any exception, there is not a single plant suitable -9 iudow culture which will flourish i trer be allowed to stagnate in the bo of the pot. .The larges ;.vin California con tains 1,200 eoW the milk of which [as been before the American public w OVER THIRTY years. I have been for years past attending striet v to thc treatment of diseases of women, both married and single, and as the number Iof cases continues to increase alnost daily I will pay special attention to those who~ may apply to mc for help, and may, iif I .shourld get a suflicnt number of cases, make it a specialty. There are many women who are taking medicines recommsendedI for suchi diseases, which are worse than useless, they palliate and sometimes seem to give relief,.but in fact they- postpone the evil until thbe idisease assumes the chronic form, and then they ap ply to the Physician for relief, which can be given, but not so soon as when taken in the first or early stage.
