SYSTEM IN FARMING. At a recent meeting of Farmers, Professor Miles, of the Michigan Agricultural College, said: Farmers should cultivate habits of investigation, and go to the bot tom of questions, and when re commendations are made, they should consider all the surround ings. The great defect of Ameri can farming is a want of system -the want of a proper compre hension of the relations which one departmeut of the farm bears to other departments. If we raise stock,i", should be with reference to raising of grain, and if we raise grass and grain, it should be with reference to raising stock. We cannot always afford to raise that which pays the best, because of its influence upon other departments. There are, of course, locations where the farm may be given to a specialty, but as a general rule, mix ed husbandry, giving a variety of products, is the best. The labor question is a troublesome one, and i'armers will it find to their advan tage to so shape their systems that they can employ their labor all the year round, and thus avoid the evil of paying high wages a portion of the year. He did not believe the absolute exhaustion of Western soils practically impossi ble ; but it is impossible to bring the land into such a condition, that it will not profitably produce the some crop year after. But the farmer should grow those crops which, other things being equal, will give the most value in manure, and this value can be measured, because it de'pends upon a few elements which have a com mercial price. WHAT WORK WILL DO. I have heard a great deal said about hard times, and the bottom rail getting on top, and I have been bothered to know what it all means. I think I have struck it, however. The wool-hat boys and others who went to work after the surrender, are the parties that are getting on top and solving the vexed problem. They are the dnes that are getting the greenbacks, and greenbacks constitute the le ver that turns the wheel of fortune. I give one example: Three sons of T. J. H1., of Worth cpnty, this year, with two mules, raised twenty bales of cotton, seven hundred bushels of corn, be sides oats and potatoes in abun dance. They paid out fifty dollars for labor in chopping out and picking, and after settling all expenses, in cluding bagging, ties, bacon, etc., they netted over twelve hundred dollars, and are ready to begin an other year's labors. This is but one of many similar examnples in Worth and Dooly, that have fallen under my imme diate observation this season, and it puts me in mind of old times, wvhen boys had to work. I wish 1 had a daughter to give to one of these young men when he gets old enough to marry. The industrious, working, faith ful boys of this country are going to get on top, and no mistake. Las bor and energy will place them there in spite of destiny. They will own the lands now growing up in sedge, and cultivate them too, for it is a faict that where the white people are working and at tending to their business the freed men work well also; and such plan. ters are making money.-Cor. SINGULAR DIscoVERY.-Some highly respectable and intelligent members of the Edgecombe Agri- E cultural Society, stated in a recent meeting of that body, that the amputation of tha Clitoris of the sow would ser-ve all the purposes accomplished by spaying. It was specially requested that the opera tion be tested by our farmers, and full ireports made as to the results. Tfhe operation is deemed perfect- rj ly safe-can be performed even byi1 the rudest hand, with an ordinary k ni fe.-econstructed Farmer. I have been for years past attending strict. ly to the treatment of diseases of women, both married and single, and as the number Iof cases continues to increase almost daily I Iwil pay special attention to those who may apply to me for help, and may, if I should get a sufficient number of cases, make it a specialty. There are many women who are taking medicines recommended for such diseases, which are worse than useless, they palliate and sometimes seem to give relief, but in fact they postpone the eviluntil the disease assumes the chronic form, and then they ap ply to the Physician for relief, which can be given, but not so soon as when taken in the first or early stage.
