Hie die& at his residence on last Sunday week. - A colored man named Cannon, it is said' died of meningitis, near Silver Street, on Saturday the 5th. Ott Fr:iday morning last, a colored man namdMartin Griffin, died from a congestive chill it is supposed-on the premises of Mfr Chapman. On Sunday a nephew of. Mr. Andrew Kilgore 'died of' measles, we did not leprn the name or age of the little fellow. THE HEAILr.-We regret to say that measles have put in an appearance in this town, lyt only a few. cases so far heard of.,. Meningitis is quiescentist now, no new cases have been heard of for a week or two. Conjestive chills to a slight extent prevail. The Doctors in the County say there is but little sickness at present, and that the cases are widely scattered. We are rejoied tonnonc ti D.Gar manfi'sIowl but, surely recovering from the severe injuries susifns~- by his late un fortunate fall. In a short time we hope to see him out again;-and engaged in the active pursuits of isI profession. GONE TO C.umNa.-The Messrs. Culver Bros., havanavassed: this and adjoining Counties successfn4ly, both pecuniarily to themselVes and with satisfaction to the people, have drawn up their numerous stakes and departed with their large wagon train for the Town of Camden, where an invoice of their popular cooking stoves await .their coming;. We commend this enterprisig go-ahead firm to the people of that section, and bespeak; for theme the consideration which tli thoroulgh business qultisand gentlemanly manners entitle them to, and *not only as regards the: proprietors them ~selves-but the many gendlemien who are em ployed by them in running the wagons and disposing of their stoves. LIGT.-We are pleased to inform such of our citizens as are not informed on the subject, that the principal sections of the town are to be lighted by Street Lamps. The lamps arc now being made by Mr. W. T right, by order of Council, and we on ly foud this fact out by accidentally seeing Sthe f rme-work of one of the lamps in the w iorkhop of the contractor. We suppose *the CounciL_hough& ia- sufficient only to hro light on the town when the arrange mients were all completed, and therefore determined to keep the people in the dark n r4erence to-so good a work until then. We think the fact might have been made pbc, as it is notbing to be ashamed of. To-day it is one of the institu tions, not only of old King Street, the most fashionable tesort in Charleston, but of the city, and its energetic proprietor, Mr. Walter Steele, may justly be proud of its wide spread reputation. 1. is the lI,t Hall, par excellence, where gentlemen, youths and etn the smallest-pecimens of the 'lords of c.atiQn,amsbe ccommodated in any and everystyle, and at all prices. Friends Yrom this s~ction especially invited to call, and orders solicited. It. COMPLIuERTARy.-We acknowledge with pleasure a card of invitation from Captaini A. Melchers, the accomplished Preb'deut of the Charleston Deutsche Shutzen Gesell schaft, to at:end the annual Sclutzenfest in that, cii, commencin- L. Monday the 21st. Thisannual festival is one which draws out, not:only the entire gallant German citizenship of the old city, but a large pro portion of those who are not of the same race, besides bringing in hundreds from all parts of this as well as many other States. It is an occasion replete with mirth aud jo!lity, and abotnding in whole-souled hospitality, and well worth a visit. 'fTle program:ne is fall and varied, and covers five days. We advise" any of our readers, who can spare the time, to go down by all means. SPECIAL. The Temperance Advocate, edited and published by Frank P. Beard, is the only organ of Temperance in the State. It is beside, devoted in part to the family circle. It is eminently entitled to support, and we commend it earnestly to our readers. The best season for painting and be.utifying generally is that of Spring-every one with any taste desires to see his premises look attractive, and as Mr. P. is an artist in his iae, we cannot do better or say more than to advise that he be called in. The night service was closed by the llev. T. G. IIerbert, presiding elder of Spartanburg District. In the Baptist Church-the Rev. John Stout, pastor-the regular services were held. Iii the Lutheran Church, Easter Sunday was observed in ain appropriate and becoming mnanner. 'The chur'h being tastily decorated by the ladies, added a peculiar fitness to the solemn and inipressive services, wvhich ware conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. W. Kuhins. The chance.l and pillars were festooned with beautiful evergreens, and the walls graceful ly hung, while back of the pulpit, the recess wasdecorated in a fourth of a circle form with evergreens intersperseu with white stars, in the centre of which were the words "The Lord has risen indeed," and under the whole the sacred emblem of the cross. The whole adornment was liappy in effect. At the close of the sermon, the Sacramen t of the Lord's Supper as administered to the united con. gregations of the Lutheran and Episcopal Churches. Two persons were taken into the Church on this interesting occasion. At night, in the same church, a marriage ceremony was performed by the pastor-the parties Mr. F. M. Lindsay and Mrs. Eliza indsay. A VISIT TO THE GARamsos.-On Tuesday afternoon last, - while passing the parade ground of-the garrison, Major Stewart very politely invited us in, and, nothing loth, we entered. It was the hour of dress parade, and in consequence, a very opportune and pleasant time. The Major has a company he may well take a pride in-soldierly, fine looking and wvell drilled-as was evidenced in their appearance and the exercise of the man ual of arms-and we looked on with pleased at tentiojp tilt the men filed off to their com fortable quarters, to the tune-we believe of "Peggy put the kettle on, and let's have tea.' We are not certain as to the tune, however, but as it was near tea time, it makes no difference. The officers, 'Maj. Stewart and Lieutenants Miller an d Anderson, thus left in their glory, came to our stand point, to doitie honors and help to take care,of as many of the little ones-as conveniently could be done-it was a family party. And then we went through the quarters, sleeping, read ing, cook, and mess rooms, -around the large and admirable oven, where one hundred de. lightful, crisp loaves of bread are daily baked -could not go through that, you know, that is the oven, not the bread-then through the guard house and through the commissary, where a host of good things are kept, and we confess that the round trip was very much enjoyed, and not the least of the satisfaction xperienced was derived from the polite at tention of our very gentlemanly guid'es. In the sleeping rooms we noticed some veryv adsatme specimens of penmanship, in olors, by a member of the Company, Cor poral Daff, executed on cards, each bed stead having one attached, with the name of the sleeper drawa thereon ; and also in the reading rooim,-wher-e were quite a large variety of the most popular papers of the day, neatly arranged on a spacious table-was also an elaborately drawn fire screen, on canvass, done by the same master hand. The reading room is highly creditable, to boh An.dynmefl.:.e are pleased. to add ttWtlii'tmnost ojeder and cleanliness were secn on -every hand. A visit to the garrison will repay anyone. In this connection we are ,able to say, that in all probability the garrson wtil not be emoedk~ ~ebery,as was-thought OUR ScIOGLs.-Sewberry is proud of her commercial status, and of her ramified and extensive business interests. .Perhaps no other inland town of its size has increased so rapidly, and enjoys such an enviable.repu tation. We are glad-to say too, that she has reason to be proitd of her e-lucational stand ing-and that the youth of the town and country are amply provided for -from the in fant seeking after knowledge, upp those who are prep-aring for a tlorough Collegi ate course-and which latterby the way, so many imagine can be only obtained abroad. But this is a matter of taste, and one of fashion, and it is not our purpose to discuss it. We would simpi here allude to tile condition and character of our town institutions. And first in importance, there is the Fe male Academy, under the care of an expert enced teacher, and finished scholar, Capt. A. P. Pifer, most ably astisted by our accom plished and aimiab!e townswonan, Miss Fan nie Leavell, with Prof. Werber, a thorough Musician, as instructor of music. This Acad emny is a first class one, and deserves well of this section, by which we are glad it is large. y sustained. Next in importance is the Male cademy, under the accomplished direction >f Mr. Win. Brooks, than whom there is no 6etter instructor, uor riper scholar to be rOUnd anywhere. Both of these Academies are, it is a pleasure to say, tilled with sin euts, who show remarhable proficiency in I their studies, from the little first idea chaps, to the advanced pupils in the higher branch s. It is a treat to visit these institutions, crom whence are to issue, at no distant day, ducated mien and women, who will lionora bly and profitably 1ili the positions for wh ich1 they are now being so well fitted, and which will redound to the credit of those who spend heir best efforts to cu!tivate their winds and 6alents. Not the least in ipinortmnce is the pi. nary school of Miss Elmore, in the rear of the [;pti-t Church. To this, scores of little boys ind girls, daily trudge their way with satchels n back, and shining faces, in search, also, >,' their necessary portion of knowledge. This lady seems to have a happy tact and ability in leadiig the little ones along, and up, the t rudimientry steps-and that she succeeds so vell, is a sourceof pleauure. Weil may New kerry be proud of her schools, and her foster ing care and heilpng hand should ever be >ver them. Then we have the colored school under the ;idance of Mr. 1I.Rt. 3urrill,a teacher of abil ty, experience and varied accomplish:nents, who is doing a good work in his efforts to tdvan:e his numerous pupils through the n'azy labyrinth of letters. This school is rery large, :nd the progress of the scholars I i most remarkabe. But enough of the schools for the present. I J. N. GoNx-Oncc more, and then will we let the philosopher rest till next October, at which time he has promised again to visit t the devoted town of Newberry, and storm I tbe stronghold of predjudice and unbelief, or thought he came and saw, alas, he did not onquer. It was not his f:.ult-the preszure i as too strong for even the great J. N. to ontend against. Perhaps in all his wander ngs to and fro, he has never before met vith a pcople so opposed to philo ~ophical truths. With tear's in his eyes, and oie of the fiue phrcay poete -.1l ot' alsos 'lashing out, and dishevelled locks,.he bade is, his only friend in these parts, utter is solemn protest against the perversity ot' he people-anfd then came the parting. I ud this was not all-a characteristic note "olloed, and one which only a Philadelphia I awyer might decipheri. We have it still-t u vain a r ta ?ooad it-ana not so inuiImjI I iith the great man as ourself woul say that t he writer was either drunk or a maniac- t las, how little is he known. It is im- 1 aossible to conjecture all the thonghts which I turged through his mind while pennitng that tote. Some few we can, however, at least r think so, for here anud there the scribbling01 resembles the words-e chains-veil, October -cut deep-Charlie, alas- and then an dignant heavy siroke. We infer from iese words, that he wished to say that he has ais enemies in chains and will lift the veil in )ctobr, will have to cat deep; or perhaps cut deep" means that we must lacerate tewbrry for him, or may he the pain aflicted by the shameful abandonment of I ais sworn friend, Charlie, who left the 11all1 uring the most touching portion of his lecture, was the cut which entered deeply into his heart. Alas, we can only con jecture, but must incline to the opinion, that ,t was this very desertion. Thlere wercothiers who left before the climax, and though each n received a cutting reproof from th.. ~peakr, yet it could be seen that their leserion did not cause him more than a nomentaty spasm-he did not swerve an iota from the mark at which lie aimed, it was constantly in his mind's eye-and how ] we envied his power, for look as we might, nd listen as intently as possible, we could not see it-the depar ture of these man affected as too, deeply-in short, although we saw J. N. and heard his voice-no sense ould we makte of his ra pid u tterances. We say, ahhuough they left, and the origiual miserably small audience was reduced to half the number, J. N. scarcely wiuced-but hen Charlie got tip and steaked out, the huiloophr's philosophy could not sustain him-the iron entered his soul-never can -c forg&t his plaintive cry as lie pointed his long finger at the retreating form and said, 'o too! I did not think it, Charlie." The tears actually streamed from our eyes-it was oo much. But we must stop-more, munch ore might be written, only we fear' the prejudice which so nearly took the chunk ut of.J. N., might turn against us-and we old tip in time. U.nti! he returns again, lum's the word. BOU-r Tm ToWN~ .AD COUNTY. Items we fear will he scant this week unless things thaw out a little. The cold gust of' Wednesday last, and the shower which foL. owed, produced a chill, and the frost Of rhursday morning had a demoralizing effect. On Frid ay night the frost was little severer thn on the previous night, and some of our 'ardeners looked as chop.fal!cu as tenderveg etatiot. In some places potato tops were sipped. Fruit we think escaped-the weather, being dry. Outside business seems to be at a stand-stili -perhaps in consequence of the change in the weather, or perhaps a want of' chatige in pocket-hard to tell which. Indoors-that is in this office, no chiange has come over' the spirit of the dream. We ire all busy-still printing heads-if any~ one wants a head, we reiterate, this is the place to have it put on, or any kind of "Brinting lone goot, unt nice, unt sheep," as our cards indicate. The philosopher's stone, we are rejoiced to nnounce to the people of Newberry, has been found-it is printer's ink. A large sup ply on hand. Fortunes can be made by using it in advertising, or printing business cards, rcuirls, etc. In our dois last week, we lamented that there was no Soda Fountain from which the ~parkling could be obtauined.
