Walker, of Newberty, nd the last of his famaily is dead." We do not recollect men:ioning the death of Mr. L. C. Walker, and it the deceased ever lived in Newherry it never came to our knowl edge. UNION PRATZE MEETING.-These mect ings, the serious portion of the community will be glad to know, are still continued. In the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Methodist on Wednesdag, Baptist on Thur. day, and Lutheran on Friday afternoons. It is gratifiying to acknowledge that they a:e growing in interest. A BENEpACTo.-L. R. Marshall in his en deavor to please has studied out a new wrin Lie, he promises to grease you, then he will brush you, next he will card you, then if ne cessary put you in a seive. Not satisfied with all this he sets a trap to catch you, and sets you to grinding coffee; but to make amnentis for the above roughness, he promises to be devil the public with various devilled fish, flesh and fowl. Long live Marshall. -To CoEEEsPoNDENTs.-PIease bear in mind that we requir, correspondents to give us their names invariably, and that com munications which we do not publish cannot EUhe returned. Short, crisp, communications Sof local or general interest will always be appreciated not only by the editor, but by the reader, and anything of that character is v'solicited. Remember to write to the point, stick to the text, and be conscise. No one S now-a-days cares to read a long, rambling, disconnected article. THE WEATEEE.-We are indebted to Dr. d. K. Gary for the following interesting item : The weather for the past week has been like summer, the thermometer having reached in the shade as high as. 85 deg. The Spring of 1855 was exceedingly hot, the thermometer on the 19th of .April reach ina il the shade 131, and there were two sun strokes in this county on that day. The summer of that year was an exceed ingiy cool one. The crop 'if corn was a famcus one, but the cotton crop was poor. No prognostications a.re made, ad the reader can figure prcbabilities for himself. THE S.ABATH -Services were held in the Baiptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Metho dist churches last Sabbath-and by the pas tors of each, there being no visiting clergy raen on hand. In the Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist, the solemn and impressive ordinance of the Lord's Supper was partaken of by large and serious congregations. Be fore the sermon in the latter church, the rite of baptism was administered to an infant. We understand that the Sacrament was also administered at Beth Eden Lutheran church, by the Rtev. Mr. Shirey. A WONDER OF THE 19TH CENTURY.--Xew things under the sun are of common oc currence now-a-days, but Moses' Electro Galvanic is an invention not of the common order, and if the half of the flattering testi mnonials published-of which Capt. J. F. Speck is now in possession-be true, and we have no reason to doubt their truth, then indeed will the E!ctro Galvanic Spectacles now offered for sale, prove a blessing to a large portion of mankind. The advertise ment published in this paper wi!! be read with interest and will give a full description of power, and the perfect ease, of' this wonderful invention. AN U7N1A2R~ALELLED OFFRax.--Messrs. STurnbull Bros., the publishers of the South ern Magazine-the only Southern Literary Magazine published-make a splendid offer through our columns this week. They will furnish a superb steel engraving 29x35 inches "The Burial of Latane"-alone said to he worth $20,- together with their Maga z ine, for the small sum of S4.50. Now who wants a four-dollar magazine and a twenty dollar engraving for four dollars and a half? A large number ',we doubt not. As will be seen, we have been requested to act as agent for the publishers, and will be ! - py to re ceive subscriptions and forward t an for any wiho signify their desire, Come up at once and secure a splendid picture and a large amount of good reading. DEras.-We rccord with pain the sud den and untimely death of Miss Annie, the amable and accomplished daughter of Rey. J. B. flillhouse, which occurred on Wednes div last. She was taken sick on Monday w.ith congestion, and in forty-eight hours thereafter yielded up her gentle spirit. Miss -Annie was the light er tae household, and 'rher sudden death fails like a blight on the tt matily. Our tenderest sympathies are wiah y0em in '.yis their sore bereavement. S Oc the 30th alt. Mr. Thos. Martishaw' of [~avbintouI suddenly departed this life. But not so. The streets we.-e pretty well tilled, and around the Court House were gathered the usual ciowd hungry for more broad acres of land. The sales were as follows: one acre lot in town, $810; the Stewart lot, oie acre with dwelling, .4500, remaining acre of same, S00-Mlr. Foster Blodget, we learu, the purchaser; one lot in town of Frog Level, 20x80 feet, 592; one tract-Nance's-672 6-10 acres $23000, subject to mortgage: two other tracts re spectively 366 and 171 acres-Fair's-$100, also subject to mortgage; and one of 220 acres, $550. "J. N."-The pressure was removed on Monday night, and the philosopher was hap. piiy enabled to deliver himself, to the great satisfaction of a small but highly intelligent audience. That no more of our citizens were present, is an evidence of their want of ap preciation either of the wondrful manor his ph ilosophical truths, and that a few of the smail audience slunk away while his clarion notes were making the very rafters tremble. shovs too that they had not the nerve to witness the uplifting of the veil or bear tle truth as he alone can proclairn it. Our limited knowledge of the English !-.n.tVge prevents us giving him such a notice as he deserves and perhaps it is well, for this reason, if no otier, that those who failed to turn out and see and hear him for themselves, deserve the punishinet that their absence naturally in flicts. L-VE;Lv -On Sunday morning last the Rev. Manning Drown was variously called on. First, the chief of the Pro;.ressive .ge, tired of propelling life's canoe by a single oar known by seamen as scalling-deterinined to man his boat more efficiently, and to that eud wisely chose a helper from nature's best -a woman. In short was married. The knot was tied etfectually, Mr. Brown calling to his assistance the valuable aid of the Rev. R A. M ickle,to make it fast and tight. The Pro gressive's canoe will no more drift about un equally propeiled, but now propetly balanced, wili ride life's waves securely. ecoud, the HICnALD chief, :i,rt for items of local interes:, de:ermined not to be be hind, and knowing that his canoe was fully wo-man-ed. cogitated for a time as to how he should catch up with, if not go ahead of, the Progressive man. A happy thought, lie had an unchristened younAster-:he latest edition-at home-there is :dway's one of them in welli-regulated households-brought him out, and had him sprinkled and tiamed Eugene Farguzn, before a large audience, the Progressive man and his bride looking on-perhaps in tears, we don't know. 1 was a beautifnl sight. Straws will be drawn as to which of the two is ahead. A MAN MCUDELED BY A CORONER WITH AN EMPANNELLED JuRY.-The followinz account of a verdict of a Coroner's Jury was clipped f:om a recent number of the Pro gressive Age of Newberry: At the inquest held over the body of Thom as Bedenbaugh, who was drowned in Salu da river, by James Henderson, Coroner, with an em pannielled jury, on the 2t2d of March, .4 1873, the jury rendered in a verdict, that liei ame to his death by his own carelessness and risk in trusting to his own powers forj his delivery. j It would appear from this that any inan i i Newberry county-, who makes any personal j , exertions to save his own life when in dan - I ger is to be murdered by a Coroner and ai1 jury on account of his presumption. The above is from the Columbia Carolir. < ia, and we regret very much that the Pro gressive item alluded to has been brought soi prominently before the public. Nothing in | the world could have indueed us to add to1 its publicity. We are looking ahead-andI hope that a tide of emigration will ere long1 set in Newberry'-ward, and we do know that< it will be a struggle for life with many an] unfortunate, in the natural course of things, but where is the use of telling them before hand of the dangers which will beset them. I is feared now that some will be deterred from coming. SPECIAL. Sec notice of the Chairman of the Board of State Orphan Asylum. An advertisement of the Southera Maga zine, preseuts an unp.tralleled offer. Messrs. Webb, Jones & Patrker are offering 8 per cord for Tan Bark; there is money in See card of Mr. W. T. Tarrant, Mollohon Row, he keeps a first rate assortment of goods, all well selected. Read the notice elaewhere of J. L. Peters, offering gems of music, at prices remarkably low. The advertisement of Messrs. Shiver & Co., i attractive enough to speak for itself, and al that we feel called on to do is to invite atention to it. Mr. IIenry IIl. Blease's card this week speaks for itself. It means business, he is at his old stand, a favorite cue, he has a store fll of goods, which he will sell, and he is preprred to execute any kind of work in his line. Clothing for everybody, for all tastes, all sizes of people, and better than all, to suit all pockets, can be had of Messrs. Kinard & Wyey, Columbia, Mr. Kinard having lately returned from the North with a full and varied stock of all that a gentleman or youth can possibly need. A cheap and pleasant route from here to New York and points West, is by the Great Southern Freight and Passenger Line, via Charleston. Attention is called to the card of this popular line, and for any information we refer with pleasure to Mr. S. B. Pickens, Gen. Ticket Agent, S. C. R. ft., Charleston. S. C. The attention of the ladies of this commu nity as well as the surrounding country is called to the advertisement of Drs. Hill & Setzler, who are the agents for Newberry, Laureus, Greenville, Spartanburg and Union Counties, for the improved Vertical Feed and Shuttle Sewing Machine. This machine is a deservedly popular one, METNG.W were pleased to be pres entat a meeting of the Newberry District Monumental Association, held on Monday last, and that the information there gained was of a gratifying character. At the two last meetiiigs, absence from home prevented attendance, and we confess not bemn; fully posted. We now learn by the remarks of Chairman, Y. J. Pope, Esq , that the Associa tion is quite alive to the important work in and, that nearly two-thirds of the sum necessary to erect an appropriate monnment to the fallen brave of Newberry, has been subscribed, and a large proportion paid in, and that but for the extreme cold of the winter, and the niiserable condition of the roads, which prevented the ladies from en gaging actively in the work, no doubt is entertained that the whole sum would now be in hand. It appeared from the President's remarks on that occasion that there were persons who bad expressed some feeling df discouragelient, because during the periodj alluded to, no more was done. This i wrong.-there is no reason for desponding, the monument will be built and the amount necessary will be raised. This is no personal or private enterprise to gratify any particular person -or section,- baZ-no in which the" w.n2c pManI# af Newbrr g@ CQCld, and are proud of, and we believe whe proper means are taken, and all the varion committees get to work, and that, it is pr< posed shall be done at once, the next repo: will show that the Society-which now b resolution of Col. Keitt stands pledged to it erection of the monument-is ready to cot tract for the work. Immediately after the adjournment of th above named Society, the Survivors Assc ciation was called to order, and after remark from Mr. Pope and others promotive of t1 regular business-it was moved by Col. Keit that the committee on correspondence be it structed to procure a speaker to make an at dress on Memorial day. We are pleased to see that baoth of thez Societies claim the attention and interest C the people of Newberry, and it is well. For further particulars we refer to th regular report of the Secretary. DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.-On Frida, nlight last, or rather Saturday morning abont 2 o'clock, Dr. Geo. Garmany of thi town, accidentilly fell from the secou story back window of the sleeping apart ment of Dr. J. It. Thompson, and sustain(< it is feared very serious injuries of an interns character. Dr. Garmany it appears, as w learned from himsch', had been in close a tendance for a nntmber of ni;hts on o;,c hi patients, and had lost much sleep, and o, this particular night, being relieved fror 1;is watch, about the hour named, had gon to the room of his fri.nd to snatch a bric rest, rather than go to his home to disturl bis sleeping fauil. After ratiring he soo ell as!eep. No[ long after lie arose in hi blcep, went to the window, the blinds of whicl were draw%n together, nid pa.hing ag.,ins themi--the wi.dow sill being very low-h 'elI out head forenuost, a distance of abou 15 fect, striking a board fence about three e't from the house, a board of was displace' )y the fall. How long lie lay is not known ut his cries aroused Dr. T., who went dowr ind discovered the prone form of his frieni tretched upon the ground. A mercifu rovidence alone saved Dr. Garnany from iorribie, instantaneous death. A:l of Sat irday and the Sabbath his frieads feared hi must succumb to severe iijuries which hi ;ufferiigs sceined to indica.te, but we are ie oieed to tay that now lie appeats to b )etter. PERsOnLs.-Our town has lately sustain .d several losses in the removal of usefcl aud steemed members of the community, and imong the number, Mr. H. E. Bruce, fbrmer. the polite and eflicietit chief of It. C shiver & Co's ,:ore, together with his tiniable lady. Frwi: the sanie establishment t1so, has been removed the accomplizhet Lid fasciii.iting Superintendent of the Mil incry Department. Miss Kate Moran, a roung lady who h-id attached to her a large :ircle of warm friends. We regret the loss ot ,h. Both are now nt the Co 3mn7ii strc. In the general management of Shiver , o's business has been placed another one of lte experienced gentietnen from :he Columbit iouse-.Mr. W. L. G iry, to whom we tender lie congratulations of the press on his advent mong a pleasant community, and his levation to the headship of a populam unsiness. Then again, the departture of our oik ellow-citizen, Mr. Partrick Scott, iifter s esidence here of near a quarter of a century FIr. Scott has gone to Sumter, and in comn >sny with his only daughter. As he is. towever, not wholly determined as to hi: ourse, there is a hope that he may return. We trust the hope may be realized. We arc pleased to notice back again in th< insy avenues of trade, our accomplishe<. ownswoman-Mrs. Mower--after a successfu >usiness trip North. She h as largely added o her stock all the novelties and necessitict if the season. Immediately under thc lEAnLD office is the place where these eautifal goods are to be seen and had, iBoUT THE~ TOWN AND COUNTY. The weather at preseat writing is delight 'ul. Happily it blew over, and: noderiate rain fall only was time result. The allusion to chickens going to roos vas only a metaphor. There are none hert :o take such an elevated position. A baske >f chickens tied behind a wagon would excitn nore attention than a circus band wagon Eggs of course are consequentiy scarce. I here are any of either in the county, pleasi ring them in. Farmers of Newberry arc advised to ust :orn torpedoes as at protection against thievinig :rows. They are so arranged th at as soot is one is swallowed it explodes, to the ever lasting damage of the crow. Its sure, try i -much better than silent, perambulatig strychinine. This reminds us of a common mistak many persons make in saying they "gi through a course of medicine." Of course it is not so. Vice versa. And by the way, we mind that Dr. Fant the accomplished and handsome druggis diown town, has iust returned from abroad and has brought with him many thing whicht the public will liketo have. In tbis wise, and at the hands of th immortal "J. N." We inadvertently forgo to remind our myriad of readers that th great philospher and philanthropist woult irate on that evening. He came up pos baste to know the reason. An explanatio: was attempted-It was an accidental ovem sight. J.
