arm,4arbru sut-oa RAISE YOi COLTS. It ha szruck us o.ften, in our observations on the rural economy of our peop!e. that we a9re very generally chargeable with a great oversight in our neglect of raising. work stock. We speak experi mentally when we say tiat unuer most unfavorable circut 5ns a colt can be raised for abo-u twenty five dell.&rs, to a working age, and a mule for about what it takes to raise s calf. If one does not kn,w what a broomsedge pasture is good for, let him try mule r!i:n bk its help, and he will see. It certainly cannot be mere fan cy in us when we avow our stront conviction of the iuperior vfe t a Southern raised horse or mule. We do not hesitate to s;y that we mn110h pres'er theQ a1imal that ha, been reared here to one iitured further North. Mwh( of the advantag in th, diffe, rence. we think, iesults frion the mode of raising, probably more thain: in thke lact of climate. A colt of any kind. whieh from its birth. is freed and brought Flrward with til expedi0ion, that a price may be had for him as soon as possible. must, we think, eone into market with a confirmed softness and an immatuirity which will not be very conductive t) a str3ng constiLu tion or much durability. We have knowi- Georgia rISed mules which, in their rearing, fared little if any better than calves, which were gay as colts, at fifteen years of ige. It is not unr'enGn able to expect twenlty or twe-ty five years good service firo0M a home-raised mule, if from the start it has been humanely arid carefully treated. Our practice has been to keep one or two good stout mares for the purpose of breeding our own stock, and putting them in as the regular farm animals. Let the colts come in the latter part of August, and as the dam will have nothing to do about the time ot foaling, everything is favorable for a good start for the co!t be'3re regrular duty in the crops begins again. In fact. good Fall pasL1 Ilues. plenty of cool milk, (we mean noi over heated milk,) tor the suckig, will bringit on so rapidly by March it may be, and should be, weaned andA the dam will make a fall conit in the labors of the plow fOr the enu nycrop. In this wav we would find a horse or mtle coit coming (! pnI.!1 every farm- in our counit:y,. and thereby we wouldi repair the drain uiponi our resources by wear. and tear and loss of~ work stock. as well as stop the immerse out;ay for. mules which we make every year. Of course very large plant er miAht not do this, but every iml farmecr crta:~ily ight, c we think eerlninly should. If stoek were m::ltiplied al over the South by this sort of thrift and economy. the small ihirmers wo. a he able to keep up their own num ber of pow aunimals. and out of ther urpussupply the large p'lan.ter at home, and thereby we would keelp theQ moneliy made from our cotton whnere it belongrs.
