RAISE YOi COLTS.
It ha szruck us o.ften, in our
observations on the rural economy
of our peop!e. that we a9re very
generally chargeable with a great
oversight in our neglect of raising.
work stock. We speak experi
mentally when we say tiat unuer
most unfavorable circut 5ns a
colt can be raised for abo-u twenty
five dell.&rs, to a working age, and
a mule for about what it takes to
raise s calf. If one does not kn,w
what a broomsedge pasture is good
for, let him try mule r!i:n bk its
help, and he will see.
It certainly cannot be mere fan
cy in us when we avow our stront
conviction of the iuperior vfe t

We do not hesitate to s;y that we
mn110h pres'er theQ a1imal that ha,
been reared here to one iitured

advantag in th, diffe,rence. we
think, iesults frion the mode of

with a confirmed softness and an
immatuirity which will not be very
conductive t) a str3ng constiLu

We have knowi- Georgia rISed
mules which, in their rearing, fared
little if any better than calves,
which were gay as colts, at fifteen
years of ige. It is not unr'enGn
able to expect twenlty or twe-ty
five years good service firo0M a
home-raised mule, if from the start
it has been humanely arid carefully
treated. Our practice has been to
keep one or two good stout mares
for the purpose of breeding our
own stock, and putting them in as
the regular farm animals. Let the
colts come in the latter part of
August, and as the dam will have
nothing to do about the time ot
foaling, everything is favorable
for a good start for the co!t be'3re
