WXAT Now ?-We noticed Esq Lake with
Surveyors' zpparatus taking the boundaries
of Pratt Street, on Monday afternoon, and it
is verily inferred that the town of Newberry
is to have a .street railway-or perhaps the
route is being surveed for the C:ister Rai!
road connection. Which is it? Will some
body tell.
Ma. S. B. CALCUTT--The fiiends of this
gentleman will be pleased to learn that he
has left the ton'n of Marion, and come nearer
to Newberry. We learn from the Carolinian
that he has located in the city of Columbia
and has taken "harge of the boarding depart
ment of the Columbia Female College. This
is certain1y a very pleasant undertaking,
and we wish him and his family the most
abundant success.

A CATASTnPH.-The wzuRl quiet of our
town was sowewhat broken on Sunday
night, and the dwellers around Mr. O'Neill's
store were not a little disturbed during the
small hours of the night mentioned, by an
unusually mournful and protrrcted noise.
The presence of a Marshal was vainly in
voked, and prayers m.de for some member
of the humane society to appear on the
scene, hut all to no purpose. Morning at
length dawned, when its light revealed a lit
tie yellow juvenile eat on top :he sloping
I shed of O'Neill's store, where it had been all
I night in the bitter cold, and unable to get
f down. It was at once rescued.
TEMPEsTUoUS PAssAGE.-Sometimne last
week an immense cog wheel was removed

his present residence about 4 miles above
the Court House, and we are told that the
rout taken in transit presents the appearatnce
of having been visited by a tempest. The
whole road is torn and cut, fences destroyed,
and that except no smoking heaps or blacken
ed chimneys are left to show i-.s course, one
mighst imagine that the conquering hero who
rlaid waste a portion of the State in 1865 had
sagain visited the land he loved so well. We
have not seen this immense cog, have not
travelled over the road, nor seen the broken
fences, uprooted trees, dilapidated houses,
~'frig btened and indignant inhabitants, nor any
Sof the signs of damage as related by our
Mollohon reporter, and of course cannot say
Spositively if the damage is not somiewhat
hb exaggerated. It is given as heard, and th~
