To New York Advertising Agents.
Two-thirds of the propositions made a-; by
advertising Agents at the North are on such
low terms that it is impossible to'enterrain
or accept them The charac:er, too, of some
of the udverti:,ements are objectionable. As
we are almost daily in receipt of some such
propo-i:ions, and neither have the time or
inclination to answer and state reasons for
not i ecepting, we make the notic-, that when
no attention is paid to letters of this kind,
the gentlemen will understand that their fa
vors are not appreciated, for one or the
other of the followina reasons : First, that
-with one or two exception,-we have been
egregiously taken in in the past, and here
after quarterly in advance payment must in
variably accompany an order: and second,
zhe advertisement must be unexceptionable,
gift concer:s, &c., will nct be published. tf.
Dickens' Best Thoughts.
We acknowledge receipt of the 3d and
5th nos. of this acceptable book,from the
publishing house of E. J. Hale & Son,
Murrav St., New York, and compiled by
F. G. DeFo,itaine. We reiterate it is
just the book of r--rence every reader
needs. It is put,lisned in numliers, at

International Exhibition.
On our first vage will 1-e found an ad
dress to the people of the Ut-ited Stat.es
from the committee and forwarded by
Hon. J. L. Orr, one of the coninis.,ion
ers for this State. The object as stated,
is to make provision for the celebration
of the Anniversary of Americ-! Inde
pendeice, which occurs in 176. It will
no doubt be a grand affair, and eclipse
any public event of past American his
tory.
Death of Mr. yohn Marley.
We are deeply pained to notice in the
Carolinian of Thursday last. the death
of this esteemed gentleman, which oc
curred at his home in Aiken, to whi:-h
place he was on a brief visit to his fatni
lv. We have ltng and intimately known
him and coincide t%ith the just tribute
made by the Carolinian:
"In all the sterling qualities ot the
gentleman and man of business, he was
pre-enineit. He was gentle amd unas
suming in hiz itericourse uith others,
the enmhoriiment of the true suavitor in
modo, while at the same time an unyield
ing adherence to integrity and principle,
the genuine f'ortiter in re, was a part of
his nature. He has for _noy years-for
more than a quarter of a century, we he
lieve-been an honored and irz.teui offi
cer of the South Cat olina Railroad, and
his energy and -xactness has done muwh
to maintain te high standard fir besi
ness transactions in the several dept-t
tutents of itat corporation w hich htad
from titme to time coni tinder his super
vision or control. Ie leaves a void in

moved which will nevi r be filled by a

Friday evening, the 8th, the nirator of the
Preston Society being sick, the whole
honor of the occasion devolved on Mir.
Chas. J. Wofford, of the Calhoun Socie
ty, of whose address the Spartatn speaks
in highly complimen tary terms. The
closing exercises of the Spartanhurg Fe
male College, arc mentioned as very in
teresting, the annual address before the
D)eStael Literary Society, being delivered
on T'uesday night, the 13th, by Prof. J.
!!. Carlisle, of Woff'->rd, who was in one
of his happiest motods. Commencemwent

There is just this differenve between the

practical route for a canal, connrected
