Oar thanks are tendered them for the favor. JAtAPA TO COUET Hocsa.-Our appeal la-t week that the road from town to Jalapa he repaired has been happily read and con sidered. We learn to-day thrat all the holes are being filled up and crossed with sub st.intial timber. Th is news will be received with great rejoicing by all parties who h ave to travel in that direction, as it is or was one of the most wretchmed roads in the whole County, and equal to 'Jordan's ha:d road,' over which the poe t says it took "forty grt.y horses all in a row" to land him. All thanks to the caizens of that section. Fill up your holes, citizens of Newberry everywhere, and tell us when the work is (lone, that we may add well done, good and faithful road-workers. THE CoaxET's~CotckntT.-The entertain' ment given by the band on Friday night last, was largely attended and well received, andI called dowrn the house ic continual rounds of applause and merry laughter. We have repeatedly before alluded to the tanlent in this corps of "natives," and it wonld be a useless repetition to repeat again, but we must add to the rast chr-onicle L:y say ing, an acquisition has been made lately in g .ining the versatile aid of Mr. C. Davis, wiho, as an end man, dancer, etc., is A NO. 1. The scenic arrangements by Mr. J. Packer, were tas:eful, and handsomely executed. The programme on this occasion was rich in variety and excellence, with the excep t'au perhaps of the instrumental music, which somehow or other sounded flat-oth ct-wise it na< capital and good as the best. The dancing by Messrs. Davis and Smith was enrcorcd loudly, and happily repeated before the floor was injured by the heels and sticks of the audience. The railroad smat h was spiendid, the crisis arriv:ng only too soon, the woman's rights speech of Mr. Smih was ruinous to vest buttons and hoo'ks ad eyes, while sthe Shadow Panto mimre was -as good as could be made. E. Jackson, of Clim bia, is not only a dispenser of pills, powders and plasters, for the healing of mankind, i but his large and varied experience teaches him that while some suffer for the want of medicine, others need food of a generous and wholesome kind, and none more so than editors of inland country papers. Strongly impulsed, therefore, just as we had done the Fair and on the point of returning home, and passing the Doctor's door, hungry look ing, jaded and empty in pocket, this sympa- i thizing friend rushed out and presented us with an elegant pair of Biss. We accepted the fishy compliment, gave thanks and moved on, while the Doctor returned to mix a few more of bas irrepressible never-failing, silent perambulators, with a face radiant and heart full, from the consciousness of an appropriate gift. Dr. J. is a clever gentle man, a good doctor, a scientist, botanist, and a pisaculturist, ard in his investiga tions after information often brings to light something which not only affords hiin pieas ure, but attracts the wonder-loving public; and just so perhaps were the Bass produced. It matters not, however, whether hocus po cus or real, for when cooked they were ele gant We commend our friends to Dr. Jackson; go to him whether sick or well, and get something. RELIGIOvs.-Thc fourth quarterly confe rence for the station will be held in the Me thodist Church on Saturday and Sunday next. Mo.E ARFsTs.-Wm. 11. Franks, one of the most peaceable citizens of this Coun ty, was arrested at this place,last Tue,day, and lodged in jail for a few hours, but was afterwards, on the same day, by the kind and accommodating disposition of Commissioner Runkle, brought out and admitted to bail in a bond of A5.000. to appear for trial at the next term of the U. S. Court at Columbia. Win. Peterson was also arrested on the sa:ne day and lodged in jail. John Davenport, Esq., was arrested on last Saturday, for alleged violations of Internal Revenue Laws. lie was baled in a bond of $1,500 to appear for ti ial at next term of Court.-Laurensville Her ald. ANorHER G1N IlotsE BURNT.-The gin house of Xessrs. T. M. White and Johnt W. Danntel,. situated two and a half miles southwest of town, was entirely destroyed by fire on lwst Wednesday night. We learn that the loss of the proprietorsand oth.r persons will amount to about $2800. Nine bags of cotton, belonging to various parties, are included in the loss sustained by the fire.
