The Newberry herald. (Newberry, S.C.) 1865-1884, November 13, 1872, Image 2
Wednesday, November 13, 18ff.
The majority of H. L McGowan. Eaq.,
(for Solicitor of 7th Circuit.) over his
opponent in the Counties of Laurens,
Union and Spartanburg aggregp ted 1242,
but the majority against him in New
berry, of 1341 (Radical) was not to be
overcome.
Right and Proper.
Greenville is to have an Agriculturil
and Mechanical Association. This is
right, every County should have such a
Society. The times demand it, and only
those people who are asleep as to one of
their best interests overl-;ok the necesi
ty.
If there be a reader of the Herald who
is not yet in possession of the inehm
choly fact, we take a nournful pleasure
in stating for his information that Mr.
Greeley has been overwhelmingly btate?
by Grant, and that the figures are enor
nious, but not enough to scare uncle
Horace, who goes back to his farm and
paper like a true philo,opher.
Ander-n County Fair.
We lewn fro:n the ltelligencer that
the late Annua! Fair of the Farmers' ar.d
Mechanics' Society of Anderson County,
was a decided su-cess, and we are pleased
to chronicle such a fact. The excellenee
of the articles at:d superiority of stoclh
exhibited on the .ccasion were particu
larly gratifying., while the general inter
est manifested, n!t only by the citizens
of that County bit of those surrounding,
made the Fair wba- all hoped it would
be. The premiums be6towed were large
in number and valuable. Success to
Ccunty Fairs.
The Columbia Carolinian.
Mr. W. H. McGw, who has been for
the past ten months chief editor of the
Columbia Pnonix, has accep'ed a like
position on the Carolinian, and carries
with him a well-deserved reputation as a
forcible, active writer and sound reason
er. Mr. McCav, though quite a young
man, gives evidence of an experience and
tact i journalism which will soon place
him in the front rank in his arduous
profession. We congratulate the South
Carolinian on the acquisition of so val
uable a coadjutor, and wish proprietor
and editor all the success possible.
The Presidential Contest
Resulted in the re-election of General
Grant by a majority over Mr. Greeley of
more than a half million votes.
Had the Government, with its power
and patronage, anything to do with the
success of the el"ction ?
We trust that President Grant masy
find it comnpatible n. ith his inilitary
training, to so administer his great civie
trust, that a bright and ha:ppy era of
local and national prosperity shall pre
vat'.
Those who 'den!lj us:ly and love muer-'
will ailways find that "the mild power
subdues."
The South Carolina Ball.
The annual bail and supper given by
the South Carolina Cluh, at Nicke:sonr's,

* The State Fair.
The gat.heririg at thre late Annual Fair
of the Agricultural and Mecthanical So
ciety, was as large as on any'. previous
oce;-,ion, the grorunds and] building, be
ing ero.' ded with visitors from arli parts
of the State, and] presenting a seer"' of
aniunted an,d famncifully dre'wed life only
to be seeni at re-unions of this k:r:d. In
some of thre decpartmienits, perhaps, there
wa-; a slight falling <fl in the exhibition,
while in o:hers there was a better dis
play. The d->mrestic corner was the
great centre of arttractioni to th~ 1-viies as
well ais gentlemnen, and tIbe array of :.rti
eies, such as delicious lonking loaves o f
bread, jellies, preserves, g>iektes, wines,
cakes and ,a hundred other nic nracs, such
-- as only the good housewife knows how
to c.oneoet, were in enidiess variety. We
h:,ve never seen a mnore tempting dis
;,Aav, nor one which refle.cts more credit
on the exhibitors. The fancy depart
tuen t was .al o well filled, and the display
beautiful indeed. Of the vegetable kind
then e was also a larg;e andI crediit.aide va
* 7iety. In m~ehamecs and agriculture
there was muue to give evidence of pro
gressioni amnong our people, an;d th:.t they
a:re abrve to somrie of thre best interests of
the S:ate. Th:: display of live stock, too,
was better we beldieve than ever.

The Horse Contagion.
The malady affecting horse fleh, and
which has swept over the North with
more or less virulence is Slow in its
movement South and West, and of a
milder type. ['he affection is said to run
its course in ten days, -nd readily yi,hIs
to good and prompt treatint-the ai
maIs being !aid up diivg their illn .
The disease has reacbed Charleston,
as the following, extract from an article
in one of the city papers will show
"At the Citade! there are seventy sis
government horse., and four mles. All
of these animals are or have been sick,
the disease having started n the rig t
of the liae and swept like wildfire throl
the whol. stab'e. About one half of i.e
br:es are now sick, anA four of t hs e
are in a very had condition. Th.-Y all
have hard, dry c,uzhs, With proh,e dis.
charges of offnsive mater (roI the
mouths and nostrils. The me:hod of
treatmen: ad!pted, a::d whi. has p',ved
very efficacious, con;Ists of wa-h,:z tLe
mouth and nostrils with cjld water, and
then steaming with vinegar. This is
done by putting a hot biick ino a feed
bag, fastening it on the horse's head,a d
then pouring vinegar upon the brick,
causing the stearm to rise up into the nos
trils. This causes sneezing, and rarely
fails to give immediate reif. Tar is
also kept burning in the stables. a a dis
infectant and preventive measure."
Although the disease has n .t vet
reached this section, it woolfi ie wtll for
own!rs of horses to watch lheir slt-Ik.
