recorded above.

doilurs-for cottou transactions. In one day
twenty-seven thousand dollars was imbursed.
This speaks volumes for the com.mercial
feeilities and integrity of our town, and for
the prosperity of the National Bank of New
berry. -

berry at 9.30 p. m.
All those who are desirous of paying a visit
can do so for one fare.
(Gov. Scott made a speech to his colored
friends here last Saturday. We have not
been informned r.s to what he said, other than
his admission that there had been "some ex
trava'gance" in the State Legislature.
When Judges cast aside the sacred ermine

this county lately missed a fine calf. Diill
gent and active search was made for it, but
to little purpose, till accident discovered to
him that the calf had fallen into his well and
there had. remained till the flavor or veal had
so affected the water as to make it certain

BUSIEss--COTTON.-yhe lively, crowded
appearance of the stlects of Newberry, and
the busy scenev exhibited, in all the num
rous stores which iine the public thorough
fires, is a sirht wbich strikes the attention of
Strangers with surprise-they wonder at the
extent of 1.usiness trawzaeted here, and that
an inland town should show such evidences
of activity, prospcrity and dash. Their won
der, however, soon gives pl.-ce to gratified
pleasure. It is indeed a pleasing sight
wagons to the right, left, front and rear, piled
up with the fleecy staple. Early they come
in. Shurp samplers and biyers are on the
alert; soon are the wagons lightened of their
loads, and the owners, with bright, crisp
greenbacks, from the National, are diving
into some of the many attaCLdVe stores
most commonly first into those which adver
tise in the Herald-and for hours basily do
their trading. In the meantime other wag
ons come also heavily laden with King Cot
ton, while some are on the return with sup
plies in groceries, shoes, dry goods, not for
getting more bagging and ties for other bags
still to be brought 0, yes, 'tis a pleasant
sight, for its business and prosperity, and
bread and meat,-and, too, the most of these
cotton growers remember what they owe the
Herald. We doubt if another town of the
size and population of New berry can show so
bright and cheering a record.
The amount of cotton received for ship
ment at the Newberry Depot, for the week
ending Nov. 2d, was fourteen hundred and
ninety-five bales.
