THE CHILDREN. rY CHARLES DICKENS. When the lessous and tasks are all ended, And the school for the day is dismissed, And the little ones gather around me To bid me good-night and be kased; Oh, the little white arms that encircle Mv neck in a tender embrace! Oh, the smiles that are halos of heaven, Shedding sunshine of love on my face! And when they are gone, I sit dreaming of my childhood too lovely to last; Of love that my heart will remember When it %akes to the pulse of the past, Ere the world and iis wickedness made me A partner of sorrow and sin. When the glory of God was about me And the glory of gladness within. Oh, my heart grows weak as a woman's, And the founztains of feeling will flow, When I think of the paths steep and stouy Where the feet of the dear ones must go; Of the mountains of sin hanging o'er them, Of the tempest of Fate blowing wi!d; Oh, there is nothing on earth half so holy As the innocent heart of a child: They are idols of hearts and of households, They are angels of God in disguise; His sa.light still sleeps in their tresses, His glory still gleams in their eyes. Oh, those truants from home and from heav en, They have made me more manly and mild, And I know how Jesus could liken The kingdom of God to a child. I ask not a life for the dear ones, All radiant, as others have done But that life may have just enough shadow To temper the glare of the sun. I would pray God to guard them from evil, But my prayer would bound back to my self Ah, a seraph may pray for a sinner, But a sinner must pray for himsei! The twig is so easily bended, I have banished the rule and the rod; I have taught them the goodness of knowl. edge, They have taught me the goodness of God. My heart is a dungeon of d.:rkness, Where I shat them fur bre_ki:ng a rule My frown is sufficient correction, ,1v love is te law of the school. I shall leave the old house in the autumn, To traverse its threshold no more Ah, how I shall sigh for the dear ones That meet me each morn at the door! I shall miss the "-ood-niglits" and the kisses, And the gu4i of their innocent glee, The group on the green and the flowers That are brought every morning to me. I shall miss them at morn and at eve, Their song in the school amnd the s:reet; I shall miss the low htu-o of their voices And the tramp of their delicate feet. When the lessons and tasks are all ended, And Death says "the school is dismissed,' May the little ones gather aroutnd me To bid me good-ntight and be ki?sed. An2 exchange thus describes the editor of the Tr-ibure: '"Ir. G reeley has a style, if he is phrenologically a failure. To see himn walk is not to realize the poetry of motion ; buit to see him bow Is to be woin at sight. He hitches up his little nlose, he opents with a partial smile iis pleasant mouthm, he poke.s a little one side, he gives a preliminary flop with his hatnd, anmd in the detar, child like war of the infant orator, jerks his polished old head and makes a bow. I defy l,is worst enemy to whom he makes that bow to ac euse him of anything wherein there is guile. lie is as innocent as Saddle Rock oyster. He puts on no airs; he blows his nose mildly in a red silk handkerchief, and be gins to taik naturally atnd un affectedlv. The chcet-s of the pubile, with whom he is a great favorite, fall unnoticed upon his cars.'' POSAt. CAIo.-The bili providing for postal cards, which passed the House of R-:presentatives at Washington last TIuesdlay, and which is now pending in the San-ate, provides in the firzst section that, to f-aeilit,te correspondence and to pr.vide for the "transmimssion int the mails of messages or other short comn mnuication's ait a retduced rate of postage, the P'ostmaster General shamll be autho rized and directed to furnish to the pub hie at a cost of one cent each, incltudmg pa)stamge, open corresponmdence er post cards, mnanufatctured of good, stiff paper, with post:dl stampts emmbossed er im pressed thereon, of such form and size, tnot exceeding three and a half inches by six and a h:tif inches, as he shall deem best :tdapted for general use, which cards shall be used aunder regulations to be prescribed by the Postmnaster General; providetd, howxever, that the staid rules and regtlattions shall prescribe that the face of said cards shall be used by cor rspond::nts eclusively for the insertion of the address, and that all cotumunica tions5 in writing or int print must bea written or parinteda o-n the reverse side, which reve: se shall be p? ovided with a thap or cover over the mtessage, as the Postmaister G:neral shall prescribe."
